ENGR 350 Assignment #3

Due: Tuesday October 8th, 2024 at 11:59 PM [38 marks total]

Submission: PDF file to Canvas

Be sure to show all your work for full marks. The textbook reference for this assignment is Ch. 8.

1. Refer to the circuit shown in below. Calculate:

𝑖𝐿 (0+), 𝑣𝐶 (0+ ) 𝑣𝑅 (0+)

𝑑𝑖𝐿 (0+ ) 𝑑𝑣𝐶 (0+ ) 𝑑𝑣𝑅 (0+ )

𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡

(Yes, this is an odd numbered question from your textbook with an answer in the Appendix,
hence easy marks, but you must show all your work to get the marks).

2. The switch in the figure below moves from position A to position B at 𝑡 = 0. Note that the
switch must connect to point B before it breaks the connection at A, a make-before-break switch.
Find the transient solution 𝑣(𝑡) for 𝑡 > 0. Assume the initial voltage across the capacitor is 0 V.

3. No energy is stored in the circuit below at 𝑡 = 0 when the switch is closed. Find 𝑣0 (𝑡) for 𝑡 ≥ 0.

4. No energy is stored in the circuit below at 𝑡 = 0 when the switch is closed. Find 𝑣0 (𝑡) for 𝑡 ≥ 0.

5. For 𝑡 > 0, find 𝑣0 (𝑡) in the following circuit.

Hint: First find 𝑣1 (𝑡)

Hint hint: This is a general 2nd order circuit

6. Derive the 2nd order differential equation for 𝑣0 (𝑡) for the circuit below for 𝑡 ≥ 0. Assume the
resistor, capacitor and inductor values are variables. You do not need to include any initial
condition formulations. Be sure your equation is neatly written and legible. Be sure to show your
work.

Assume the circuit has zero energy when the switch closes. If 𝑅1 = 𝑅2 = 10 Ω, L = 0.5 H, and
C = 0.005 F, find:

(a) 𝑖 (𝑡 = ∞), and 𝑣0 (𝑡 = ∞)

𝑑𝑖(0+ ) 𝑑𝑣0(0+ )
(b) The initial conditions and
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡
(c) 𝑣0 (𝑡) for 𝑡 > 0

2
7. The circuit below has no energy when the switch closes. Find 𝑣2 (𝑡) for 𝑡 > 0.

8. For the circuit below, assume the circuit has no energy when the switch closes.

(a) Find the steady state current 𝑖𝐿 and the steady state voltage 𝑣𝑐 after the switch closes.

𝑑𝑖𝐿 (0+ )
(b) Find
𝑑𝑡

(c) Find the voltage across the 1 Ω resistor, 𝑣𝑅 (𝑡), for 𝑡 > 0.
