Cloud Computing

CLOUD COMPUTING
What is Cloud?
The term Cloud refers to a Network or Internet. In other words, we can say that Cloud is
something, which is present at remote location. Cloud can provide services over network,
i.e., on public networks or on private networks, i.e., WAN, LAN or VPN.
Applications such as e-mail, web conferencing, customer relationship management
(CRM), all run in cloud.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is a way of using computers and the internet to store and access information and
Programs shout having to keep them on your own computer. Cloud computing uses remote servers,
usually accessed over the internet, to store, manage and process data instead of using local servers or
personal computers.

Advantages of Cloud Computing:

1. Accessibility:
Cloud computing allows you to access your data from anywhere with an internet connection.

2. Cost-Effectiveness:
Users do not need to purchase pricey hardware and software systems in order to access the
resources they require when they need them.

3. Scalability:
Cloud computing allows you to easily scale up or down your computing resources to meet
your needs. Whether you require more storage, processing power, or memory, you can simply
change your resource allocation to match your workload.

4. Reliability:
Cloud computing ensures that data to users is always available whenever they need it.

5. Security:
Cloud computing provides advanced security measures to protect users' data from breaches
and other threats.

Cloud Computing
Some Common Examples of Cloud Computing

Basic Concepts
There are certain services and models working behind the scene making the cloud computing
feasible and accessible to end users. Following are the working models for cloud computing:
• Deployment Models
• Service Models

DEPLOYMENT MODELS
Deployment models define the type of access to the cloud, i.e.,
how the cloud is located? Cloud can have any of the four types of
access: Public, Private, Hybrid and Community.

PUBLIC CLOUD
The Public Cloud allows systems and services to be easily accessible to the general public.
Public cloud may be less secure because of its openness, e.g., e-mail.

PRIVATE CLOUD
The Private Cloud allows systems and services to be accessible within an organization. It offers
increased security because of its private nature.

COMMUNITY CLOUD
The Community Cloud allows systems and services to be accessible by group of organizations.
HYBRID CLOUD
The Hybrid Cloud is mixture of public and private cloud. However, the critical activities are performed
using private cloud while the non-critical activities are performed using public cloud.

SERVICE MODELS
Service Models are the reference models on which the Cloud Computing is based. These can be
categorized into three basic service models as listed below:
1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
2. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
3. Software as a Service (SaaS)

Risks Factors in cloud Computing:

Although Cloud Computing is a great innovation in the world of computing, there also exist
downsides of cloud computing. Some of them are given below:

WORKSHEET
1. What is cloud computing?

a) A technology that allows you to access data from any device

b) A service that stores data on physical devices
c) A method of processing and storing data on remote servers accessed via the internet.

2. What is the benefit of using cloud computing services?

a) reduced IT costs
b) increased control over data
c) increased latency

3. What is cloud computing, and how does it differ from traditional computing?

6. You work for a nonprofit organization that needs to store and share large amounts of data with
remote workers and volunteers. What cloud computing solutions could you recommend to help
streamline the sharing and storage of data, and how would you ensure that sensitive donor
information is protected?

7. Jenny is a student who needs to complete a school project on the solar system. She has a lot of
pictures, videos, and documents related to the project that take up a lot of space on her computer.
However, her computer's storage capacity is limited. What can Jenny do to store her project
materials securely and access them from any device with an internet connection?

Activity
Students will work in small groups to create a scenario in which a business uses cloud computing
to address a specific need. Each group should consider the following questions
as they create their scenario.

1. What is the business problem or need that the company is trying to address?

______________________________________________________________________________

2. What specific cloud computing solution or service will the company use to address this need?

______________________________________________________________________________

3. How will the company implement the cloud computing solution?

4. What are the benefits and challenges of using this cloud computing solution for the company?

______________________________________________________________________________

5. How will the company measure the success of the cloud computing solution?
