Using Map Notes in ArcGIS Pro

If you need to add features to a web map without actually editing the content of any of the layers on the
map, you can use Map Notes to make markups. This functionality replaces what was called “Map
Annotations” or “Map Graphics” in ArcMap.

From the Add button, choose Add Map Notes.

A new layer will be created in the map, using a template of your choosing. You can choose to add point,
line, or polygon map notes.

1
Now you can draw in the new point, line, or polygon. You can also add a title and a description for the
new feature.

The map notes show up as a layer in your map, which you can then save as a Feature Layer to use in
other maps.

2
To get to the same functionality in ArcGIS Pro, activate the Insert ribbon to find the Layer Templates.

Choose a template, based on whether you want to add points, lines, polygons, or text. You can also
choose one of the sets of Map Notes on the top row of the templates, which will automatically give you
one layer each of points, lines, and polygons in a group layer.

Feature classes to hold the new map notes are created in the default geodatabase for the project. These
are permanent, so you can rename them later if you want to make them easier to find later.
