ENVIRONMENTAL MARKETING (MKTG P304)

CHAPTER 1 : Introduction to Environment

What does Environment mean?

 It represents all surroundings to an existing being and affects the survival and development of an
organism or population.
 It is the external conditions, resources, stimuli, etc., with which an organism interacts.
 It includes the set of natural, social and cultural morals and ethics presented in a specific location at a
precise period, which has impact in the existence of the humankind and in the generations to take
place.
 Environment Day is celebrated every 5th of June.

Concept of Environment
 In the broad-spectrum theory of systems, an environment is a composite of outside features that
operates on a system and establish their track and mode of survival and continuity.
 Environmental sustainability is not simply a matter of compliance or risk management, Business are
increasingly recognizing the many competitive advantages and opportunities to be gained from eco-
sustainability

Natural Resources
 These are materials created in nature that are used and usable by humans. It include natural
substance(soil, water) and energy supplies like coal and gas that serve to satisfy human needs and
wants.

Artificial (Man Made) Resources

 Materials from the natural environment that people convert to produce other things.
 There is a growing trend to turn natural resources into artificial or man-made resources. This process
is often driven by economic factors, as it is usually cheaper to produce artificial resources than to
extract and process natural ones. For example, it is less expensive to manufacture plastic from
petroleum that it is to harvest and process trees for lumber.
 However, there are significant environmental concerns associated with this trend. The production of
artificial resources often generates pollution and waste, which can degrade ecosystem and negatively
impact human health. Additionally, many man-made materials are not biodegradable, meaning they
will remain in the environment indefinitely after they are discarded.

Natural Resources Artificial (Man Made)Resources

Land-soil, mountains, fields, Wildlife Buildings
Water-river, lake, sea Bottled Water

Plants-trees, forest Paper products

Animals-provides meat, milk, wool Processed/Canned meat

Natural resources are both living and non-living. ItComponents of these resources are
may be a basic component or raw material for man-obtained from nature and then modified by
made resources or other products humans. Man-made resources are non-
living and derived from natural resources,
that are molded into new products which
can
be later used as resources.

 It is true that nature provides the things that man need to survive, there are things that man can
actually do to improve his way of living. Man simply will not be satisfied to live in caves and do hunting
or fishing for food. Humans are gifted with the skills to transform raw materials (that may be provided
by nature) and produce something else. Examples: Trees provide wood that skilled hand that can
convert furniture like cabinets, chairs, tables and even a House.

The Wonders of Nature

Nature, on its own, is absolutely amazing and beautiful. When the earth was not yet abused by
humans and the word pollution was not yet probably manifested, environmental harmony exists. The
water used to be clean and clear. Fish and other sea creatures are in abundance. The air was fresh and
pure. The soil was rich and fertile.
However, due to changing of times and other factors, like overpopulation and urbanization, the
environment experience changes that led to severe drought and famine
But is it really overpopulation and urbanization that triggered environmental problems? Or is it lack
of discipline and the mismanagement of resources?

Environmental Management

 Administrative functions that expound, execute, and observe the environmental guidelines and
procedures of a firm in an attempt to manage impact on the environment to protect and conserve
natural resources.
 It is the center of development of human welfare for existing and future generations
 It also involves people, process and Discipline

Why Study Environmental Management?

1. To discover, understand, and be trained on how to utilize techniques for evaluating, and supervising
the environmental consequences of both public and private sector organizations.
2. To expand individual, specialized and research expertise on how to contribute to the development of
our environment.
3. To implement certain management tools and methodology that can be applied in relevance to
perspective business in accordance to the rules and laws set forth by the government in all levels (local,
regional, national and global).
4. To understand that environmental management is a conscientious effort of all concerned in bringing
together in harmony all efforts to tackle environmental crises that affect the entire planet.

Current Condition of our Environment

We cannot refute the fact that our environment is continuously changing. The older generation,
our ancestors, can certainly attest to the changes they have seen and compare the past and present
conditions of or environment. Change is inevitable.

As much as we want progress, there are things that will surely be sacrifices. Therefore, There is a
great need to address this concern as well is we truly want to experience and enjoy true progress not only
for us living in the present, but more so for our children and the future generation.

There are certainly means and ways to prevent negative impact on our environment. People must
be educated and be disciplines in doing even the smallest things for the environment. It is collaborative
effort and should not be left in the hands of the government or the environmentalist alone. Individual
proper disposal of trash is an example. The little things that we do every day would somehow have an
impact on our environment, whether good or bad.
The public needs to be conscious of the kinds of environmental setbacks and challenges our world
is dealing with
What could you possibly do to contribute in improving our present environmental condition? If not
us, then who? if not now, then when? Moreover, how could we unite and adhere collectively as one nation
to support our planet and create a better dwelling for everyone to inhabit? We must act not before it is
too late.

Depletion

 Overpopulation: occurs when there are more people living in an area than there are resources to
support them
 Pollution: is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment
 Waste disposal: the collection, processing, recycling or deposition of the waste materials of human
society
 Climate change: it refers to long term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns
 Natural resource Depletion: it is when the consumption of renewable or non-renewable resources
becomes scarce

Environmental Planning
A decision making process aimed to carry out development in consideration to the natural
environment, in general. Its goal is to create sustainable outcomes while protecting and conserving natural
resources.

Environmental Status Evaluation

 Also known as environmental assessment

 Process of estimating and calculating significant short term and long term outcomes and consequences
of any implemented undertakings with respect to its impact on the environments. After thorough
evaluation, certain steps must now be considered to reduce or alleviate such effects to somehow
compensate for whatever damages incurred.
 Impact assessment is based on environmental assessment.

Environmental Legislation and Administration

 The environmental Administration is defined by its legal content.
 The heart of environmental law management is directed toward dealing with environmental
pollution
 The environmental policy centers on snags evolving from the blow created by humans who triggered
negative impact not only on the environment, but more importantly on our health.

Environmental Management System (EMS)
The part of the overall management system that includes organizational structure, planning
activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing,
achieving and reviewing the environment policy.” ISO14001
An Environmental Management System objective is an overall goal arising from the environmental
policy statement set by the organization.
An Environmental Management System target is a detailed measurable performance requirement
related to the objective.
Example:
o Objective: Reduce transportation congestion
o Target: Improve roads and bridges within five years
o Target: Replace old vehicles running for at least 10yrs
o Target: Invest in public transport like LRT, MRT

 Therefore, the objective of EMS is?

Reduce: Only take what you need

Limit packaging materials
Reuse: Purchase reusable products
Find new uses for things you
would otherwise throw away
Recycle: Can‟t use it? Think recycle first.
Most paper, plastic, glass and
metal can be recycled

Reduce:
 Reduction means to make something smaller. How? By using something less often ensuing in a
smaller quantity of waste.
 Source reduction is reducing waste prior to you actually purchasing it. Decrease unnecessary, useless,
and wasteful purchases.
 Conservation is the crucial part of waste reduction, utilizing natural resources sensibly, and using
below or less than the usual to circumvent waste.
 We can reduce the amount of trash by selecting what rubbish to throw away
 Reduce junk by donating surplus and unwanted stuff to family, friends, neighbors or even to charity

Reuse:
 It means to use an item again more than once
 Some items in our respective homes and places of work may be used several times. These things have
reusable qualities.
 It may be reused for the same purpose (conventional reuse) or to perform a different function
(creative reuse). All it needs is a good imagination and a pair of creative hands to make use of some of
items before considering of throwing it in trash. It not only saves money but it could also create some
personal touch and making it one of a kind

Recycle:
 Is to transform or convert materials/waste into reusable items. It subjects objects through a process or
treatment that permits them to be used again, usually for a different purpose.
 It should be distinguished from reuse. Recycling is the breaking down of second hand, old items to
create raw materials for the construction of new products.

 Recycling is the process of

1) Collection & segregation
2) Processing and remanufacturing
3) Purchase & use
 Recipients of Recycling
o Every Individual
o Society
o Environment

Benefits of Recycling
1. Monetary benefits
 Discover how to turn scrap into money
 Craft ideas to sell
 Make money selling things you never though people would actually buy
2. Management of resources
 To uphold and sustain ecological balance for supporting life.
 To safeguard different types of natural resources and biodiversity for the present and future
generations
3. Energy reduction
 The use of recycled things slash down energy use
 Much of energy is produced with gas and fuel that affect the quality of air.
4. Community development
 Happens when people come together. Get involved, share ideas, encourage and support each
other.
5. Provision of work
 The purchasing and consumption of recycled items creates demand for more recycled products,
thereby increasing production and opening doors for additional manpower that are paid to
manufacture something new out of recycled items.
6. Ecological security
 Reduces pollution
