I. Complete the following assignment on Solutions
1. Define
a. Reverse osmosis
b. Isotonic solution
c. Azeotropes
d. Osmotic pressure
e. Raoult’s law
f. Van't Hoff Factor
g. Molal elevation constant
h. Molal depression constant
2. Differentiate between molality and molarity of a solution.
3. Why aquatic life is more comfortable in cold water than in warm water ?
4. State Henry’s law and mention two of it’s important applications.
5. Why do games nearly always tend to be less soluble in liquids as the temperature is raised?
6. What is the similarity between Raoult’s law and Henry’s law.
7. Write the difference between positive deviation and negative deviation from Raoult’s Law.
8. a. Out of 1M glucose and 2M glucose which one has higher boiling point and why.
b. What happens when external pressure applied becomes more than the Osmotic pressure
of solution.
9. On mixing liquid X and liquid Y , volume of the resulting solution decreases. What type of
deviation from Raoult’s Law is shown by resulting solution? What change in temperature would you
observe after mixing liquids X and Y .
10. What would be the value of Van’t Hoff factor for a dilute solution of K2SO4 in water?
11 Why is the elevation in boiling point of water different in the following solutions?
i) 0.1 Molar NaCl solution (ii) 0.1 Molar sugar solution.
12. Calculate the mass of compound (Molar mass 256g/mol) to be dissolved in 75g of benzene
to lower its freezing point by 0.48 K ( kf = 5.12 K kg/mol )
13. 100g of proteins is dissolved in just enough to make 10ml of solution . If this solution has an
Osmotic pressure of 13.3 mm Hg at 25⁰C, what is the Molar mass of protein (R = 0.0821L atm
/mol/K and 760 MM Hg)
14. Calculate the amount of KCl which must be added to 1 kg of water so that the freezing
point is depressed by 2K. Kf for water = 1.86k kg /mol.
15. Calculate the freezing point of an aqueous solution containing 10.50 g of Magnesium
Bromide in 200g of water.
16. The vapour pressure of pure liquids A and B at 400 K are 450 and 700 mm of Hg
respectively. Find out the composition of liquid mixture if total vapour pressure at this
temperature is 600 mm Hg.
17. A solution is prepared by dissolving 10g of non volatile solute in 200g of water. It has a
vapour pressure of 31.84mm Hg at 308 K . Calculate the Molar mass of solute. If vapour
pressure of pure water is 308K is 32 mm Hg.
