School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Program: Summer
Course Title: Machine Design
Assignment III: Exercise on Brakes, Drives and Bearings
Submission Date:
1. Write short notes about definition, application and classification of brakes.
2. How does the function of a brake differ from that of a clutch?
3. What are the materials used for brake linings?
4. Write a short note on gear drives giving their merits and demerits.
5. How are the gears classified and what are the various terms used in spur gear
terminology?
6. State the advantages and disadvantages of the chain drive over belt and rope drive.
7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of rolling contact bearings?
8. What is a journal bearing? List any two applications.
9. A single block brake is shown in Figure below. The diameter of the drum is 250 mm and
the angle of contact is 90°. If the operating force of 700 N is applied at the end of a lever
and the coefficient of friction between the drum and the lining is 0.35, determine the
torque that may be transmitted by the block brake.

10. An engine running at 150 r.p.m. drives a line shaft by means of a belt. The engine pulley
is 750 mm diameter and the pulley on the line shaft is 450 mm. A 900 mm diameter
pulley on the line shaft drives a 150 mm diameter pulley keyed to a dynamo shaft. Fine
the speed of dynamo shaft, when 1. there is no slip, and 2. there is a slip of 2% at each
drive.
