Congratulations to you on having been selected to participate in the 2011 Angkor Photo Workshops. This little guide is something we have put together to help you prepare for the workshops. Schedule
November 16: All participants arrive in Siem Reap and check into their accommodation. November 17: Spend the day exploring Siem Reap, and meet in the evening for a Welcome Party to meet all your fellow participants and workshop tutors. There will be a slideshow presentation of each others work, as well as food and drinks. November 18: Workshop begins: participants will meet with their tutors for a briefing, and also to discuss your story ideas with your tutor and your peers. Each tutor will arrange their own schedule for meeting with each group of participants to discuss the progress of your work and to review your photos. November 24: Deadline for submission of final edit of photo story. November 26: Showcase of 2011 Partcipants work at the final evening slideshow of the Angkor Photo Festival, held at the FCC Angkor. November 27: Check-out of guesthouse, and head on to your next destination!

Most nationalities are allowed to get a visa-on-arrival at the airport in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. It cost US$20 for a tourist visa (valid for one month), and DO NOT FORGET to have one passport photo with you. Singaporeans, Filipinos, Malaysians, and Vietnamese can enter the country without a visa for a limited period. If you are from Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan or Sri Lanka, you need to get a visa before you arrive from the Cambodian embassy in your country. atMs There are ATM machines everywhere which will work with most international credit cards. Please remember that your bank will charge a fee when you withdraw money using your credit card. currency Although both US dollars and Cambodian riels are used in the country, it is better to change your currency into US dollars before you come into Cambodia. If you are coming by road, DO NOT CHANGE at the border check-point as the rates are very high. The standard exchange rate is 1 USD = 4250 Riels. A meal here range from less than US$1 (at street stalls) to US$2-5 at a cafe or restaurant. Mobile phones To avoid expensive roaming fees, you can easily obtain a local sim card here for US$2 which can be topped up with credit ranging from US$1 or more. You will need to present your passport to buy one. internet You will have free wireless internet at the workshop centre at Terrace des Elephants, and wireless internet is widely available at many cafes and restaurants here. health It is best to check with your doctor if there are any vaccinations that you should have before coming to Siem Reap. Bring any medication which you are required to take, and should any medical issues arise, there is a modern hospital and a few trusted clinics you can go to. religion You can find churches, mosques and pagodas in Siem Reap. transport To get around Siem Reap, you can easily rent a bicycle. Tuk-tuks are also everywhere, and usually cost US$1 for a short trip.

The first thing you should do when you arrive is to check into your guesthouse. The Sun Sengky Guesthouse is quite well known in Siem Reap. If your tuk-tuk driver does not know where it is, it would be useful to show him a map - or just ask someone else!

+ air travel to sieM reap Many airlines fly to Siem Reap, including budget airlines Jetstar Asia and AirAsia. The Siem Reap airport is about 15 to 20 minutes away from the city centre. When you arrive, you can easily find a tuktuk at the arrival area to bring you directly to your guesthouse. If he is unfamiliar with the name of the guesthouse, you can show it on a map or find another driver who knows the place!

+ bus FroM bangkok to sieM reap (about 7 hours) All travel agencies in Khao San Road Bangkok offer package deals with mini-buses leaving early in the morning. You can also go directly to the Mochit railway station where buses travel from Bangkok to Aranya Prathet every half-hour. When you arrive at Aranya Prathet, pass the border on foot. Once you have arrived to Poipet, you have to take another bus or a taxi to Siem Reap. The best way is to share a taxi with other travellers, and it will cost about 35$ for the whole car. You can get your visa (US$20) at the border but DO NOT FORGET to have one passport picture with you. ** Beware: When you arrive in Siem Reap, the taxi driver will try to book you in a guest house of his choice where he will get a commission.

+ bus FroM phnoM penh to sieM reap [ By National Route #6 ] This road is paved and smooth and there are several regularly scheduled daily big buses and mini-vans travelling in both directions, taking only 5 or 6 hours to make the trip. Several guesthouses, travel agencies and bus companies offer bus transport. On the trip, the bus makes one stop along the way (at Kampong Thom for a snack or lunch). The earliest bus depart starting at 6:30AM and the last bus departs between noon and 2:00PM.

+ Ferries FroM phnoM penh to sieM reap (about 6 hours) [ River Ferry ] Daily ferries ply the Tonle Sap river and lake between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The end of the trip is marked by a hill, Phnom Krom, near the ferry dock at ChongKhneas 12 km south of Siem Reap. During the dry season, the ferry stops short of the dock and passengers transfer to smaller boats to cross the final few hundred meters. [ Siem Reap Ferry Dock ] The ferry to Siem Reap arrives at Chong Khneas near Phnom Krom, 12km south of Siem Reap. There is always transportation waiting at the dock. Motortaxis charge about $1.50 $2 and cars $4 - $5 for the 20-30 minute ride into town. Ferries depart at 7am daily from the Phnom Penh Port on Sisowath Quay near Street 104. Ferries depart Siem Reap daily at 7am from the dock at Chong Khneas. The fare is $21-$25 and should be purchased a day in advance (251km, 4-6 hours). Tickets can be purchased for cheaper through hotels and travel agents than at the ferry offices.
