hough witches and wizards do not necessarily
need wands to perform magic (more on this on the
following page), they are considered extremely
useful tools in focusing one’s abilities. For the best results,
use a wand that you have won, inherited or, if selecting a
new wand, one which “chooses” you. Practice dueling is not
recognized as a way of winning another wizard’s wand, as the
wand senses the situation is not significant. It should also be
noted that, with the exception of the Elder Wand, a wand won
from its original master will perform well for the new owner,
but will likely retain some allegiance to its old owner.
Spellotape is definitely
wot considered a
“professional repaiy.

Nonverbal &
Wandless Spells
onverbal and wandless spells are extremely
NI difficult to master, though most underage wizards
are capable of producing magic in times of great
stress. Students at Hogwarts begin learning nonverbal spells in
their sixth year, while wandless spellcasting is usually only done
by the most skilled witches and wizards, or more commonly in
cultures which traditionally practice wandless magic.
MAGIC | rv In Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter is able

his wand, enabling him to find it again. This is a good example
of a strong connection between a wand and its owner.

NOTES ON LENGTH & FLEXIBILITY
! Most wands measure between 9 and 14 inches, with longer wands being drawn to
bios ith lively personalities and a tendency for the dramatic. By contrast, shorter wands
generally choose witches and wizards who wish to produce more refined magic. Wands
that measure 8 inches or less are known to choose those who are “short” on character.
FLEXIBILITY A wand’s flexibility is usually an indicator of its (and its chosen owner’s)
own adaptability. However, as with all aspects of wand-making and ownership, this is just
one factor among core, wood type, length and the owner’s personality and experience, all
of which combine to make each wand distinct from any other.

Wand Cores
andmakers around the world will use
a wide variety of magical substances
for the cores of wands, but Garrick
Ollivander will only create wands made with unicorn hair,
dragon heartstring or phoenix feathers.
UNICORN HAIR Known for creating reliable wands that rarely
experience bicchapes Extremely loyal and moralistic, these wands
are exceptionally difficult to use when practicing Dark Arts. Unicorn
hair may also produce less powerful magic than other substances,
and can “die” and need replacing if not properly handled.
