LESSON PLAN ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

I. Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. acquire knowledge on academic and non-academic writing;
2. differentiate language used in an academic texts from various
disciplines; and
3. appreciate the skills in reading and writing academic texts

II. Subject Matter: 1.Topic: The use of the language in an academic text
2. Reference: Effective Reading, pp15-19
3. Materials: laptop, projector, paper, pen
4. Methodologies: group dynamics, group presentation, lecture,
and interaction

III. Procedure:
1. Preliminary: prayer, checking of attendance, giving reminders
on house rules

2. Review:
a. What is academic text?
b. What are the structures of a specific text?
c. How do the structures differ from each other?

3. Lesson Proper:
a. Activity.
1. The students will be grouped into 4.
2. Each group will present different presentations
according to their interest (a role play, game show,
pageantry, etc) focusing on the use of formal and
informal language.
3. After the presentation, each group will explain what
type of language they used, why they prefer such
type of language, how does the chosen language
influence the activities of the people especially the
students.

b. Analysis: The teacher will ask the students on the


following questions:
1. What group or groups who used formal
(academic) and informal (non-academic)
language?
2. Which one is academic and which is non-
academic writing?
3. What differences can you identify of the
languages in terms of structure, language and
content?
4. How are the sentences or paragraphs
constructed?
5. Are sentences written using simple/specific
words?

c. Abstraction: From the given answers, the teacher will


reinforce and further discuss on the how the
language of academic text differs from other
disciplines.

d. Application: Each group will be given articles (academic


writings) and literary pieces (non-academic) to
differentiate considering the structure, language
and content which will be presented in the class
creatively.

IV. Evaluation: The students will be asked to read and evaluate academic texts
considering the language and structure used, and the ideas of the writer. (objective type
of test)

V. Assignment. Write a 3-paragraph academic essay about the given picture.
