EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THEORY (ELT)

 has significant implications of principles and pedagogical practices or applications. It

provides a holistic model of the learning process and a multilinear model of adult
development that reflects both the developmental stages of individuals and the situational
factors influencing their learning.

Experiential Learning Principles

 Experiences are structured to require the student to take initiative, make decisions and be
accountable for results.
 Students are engaged intellectually, emotionally, socially, soulfully, and/or physically.
 The results of learning are personal and form the basis for future experience and learning.
 Relationships are developed and nurtured: student to self, student to others and student to
the world at large.
 The instructor's primary roles include setting suitable experiences, posing problems,
setting boundaries, supporting students, insuring physical and emotional safety, and
facilitating the learning process.
 The instructor recognizes and encourages spontaneous opportunities for learning.
 The design of the learning experience includes the possibility to learn from natural
consequences, mistakes and successes.

PEDAGOGICAL APPLICATIONS OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Here are some ways ELT is applied in pedagogy:

1. Learning by Doing: This is the most common application of ELT. Students are
encouraged to learn by engaging in direct experience and focused reflection. This could be
through laboratory experiments, field trips, internships, or service-learning projects.
2. Problem-Based Learning: In this approach, students are presented with real-world
problems and are tasked with finding solutions. This helps students apply theoretical
knowledge to practical situations, thereby deepening their understanding of the subject
matter.
3. Simulations and Role-Playing: These activities allow students to experience a situation
from a different perspective. For example, in a business class, students might role-play as
executives making strategic decisions for a company. This can help students develop
empathy and a broader understanding of the subject.
4. Case Studies: Analyzing case studies allows students to apply their knowledge in a real-
world context. It also encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
5. Reflective Journals: Students are encouraged to write reflective journals about their
learning experiences. This helps them to reflect on their experiences, understand their
learning process, and make connections between their experiences and theoretical
knowledge.
6. Group Projects and Cooperative Learning: Working in groups provides students with
opportunities to learn from their peers, practice teamwork, and develop communication
skills.
7. Internships and Work Placements: These provide students with opportunities to apply
classroom learning in a professional setting. They can gain practical skills, experience the
realities of a professional environment, and reflect on their career aspirations.
8. Technology-Enhanced Learning: With the advent of digital technologies, experiential
learning can also take place in virtual environments. For example, virtual laboratories,
online simulations, and digital games can provide students with immersive and interactive
learning experiences.
Benefits of Experiential Learning:

There are many benefits of experiential learning for teachers and students, including:

 Opportunity to immediately apply knowledge.

 Promotion of teamwork.
 Improved motivation.
 Opportunity for reflection.
 Real world practice.

D. SYNTHESIZE
Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) emphasizes structured experiences that
engage students intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. Pedagogical
applications include learning by doing, problem-based learning, simulations, case
studies, reflective journals, group projects, internships, and technology-enhanced
learning. These approaches help students apply theory in practical settings, develop
critical thinking skills, and gain real-world experience. Benefits include immediate
knowledge application, teamwork promotion, enhanced motivation, reflection
opportunities, and real-world practice for both students and teachers. Implementing ELT
principles can create engaging and transformative learning experiences.
E. EVALUATION
