SUBTITLES IN AFTER EFFECTS

FOLLOW THIS STEP-BY-STEP WORKFLOW

Prepare your text:

• Write down all the subtitles that you need on a simple text file using Notepad on Windows or
TextEdit on MacOs;
• Keep the phrases short to fit into the screen;
• Use the character “/” at the beginning of a line to split the text, we will set the timming later on
After Effects;
• Copy all the text to your clipboard;

Installation in After Effects CS 6 or higher:

• From After Effects CC 2019 or above click: File > Scripts > Install Script UI Panel...
• To older versions of After Effects paste the file 2DF-Subtitle.jsxbin to the folder:
• Mac OS: Applications\After Effects<version>\Scripts\ScriptUI Panels
• Windows: Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects <version>\Support Files\Scripts\ScriptUI Panels

Using:
• Create a text layer and past your transcription on it;
• Select the text layer;
• Make an audio preview hitting “.” on your number pad;
• Every time that you want to split the text, hit “*” on your number pad. It will add markers to the
text layer. It’s all the After Effects needs to set the subtitles timming;
• Open the script and click ‘Subtitle’ with your text layer selected.
• Now it’s done. You may need to make some adjustments on the text or the markers. Just adjust the
text directly on After Effects and move your markers if you need to adjust timming;
• You can customize the text as you want. Change fonts, colors, text-box size, etc.
• Use the text box in the script to select another special character to split your subtitle.
