Session 2018, Semester - Spring 2021
Design Task 5
Nature of design task: Individual assignment with registration number based calculations
R = Registered number of the student
Problem Statement: Design welded truss connections for the members at the joints of your roof
truss according to your design data based upon your registration number calculations following
AISC LRFD method.
Please note:
1. Take thickness of the gusset plate larger than the thickest member in the truss. The most
commonly used thickness is 10mm for the gusset plate. The same thickness of gusset plate
is used at all joints of the truss.
2. Design connections for either half of the truss considering the larger member force in the
corresponding members on left and right half of the truss.
3. If your truss is having 10 panels then you are having a total of 20 joints in the roof truss.
You need to design connections for members at 9+2(joints at the crown and mid-bottom of
the truss) =11 joints.
4. On the other hand if your roof truss is with 8 panels then you are having a total of 16 joints
in the roof truss. You need to design connections for members at 7+2(joints at the crown and
mid-bottom of the truss) =9 joints.
After the calculations for connection design for each joint, draw a neat and clean sketch of the
members at that joint and show welds on different faces of the members in the joint according to the
standard practice as discussed and displayed in the class.
For registration number 41 – 80:
Pratt Truss with 10 panels
Span of the truss = L = 18+[(R-41)/15] m
Centre-to-centre spacing between trusses = S = 4+[(R-41)/35] m
Crown height = L/4 m

CE-308 DOSS Design/Lab Design Task 5
For registration number 1 – 40:
Howe Truss with 10 panels
Span of the truss = L = 19+[(R-1)/15] m
Centre-to-centre spacing between trusses = S = 5+[(R-1)/35] m
Crown height = L/4 m
For registration number 121 – 170:
Pratt Truss with 8 panels
Span of the truss = L = 18+[(R-121)/16] m
Centre-to-centre spacing between trusses = S = 4+[(R-121)/40] m
Crown height = L/4 m
For registration number 81 – 120:
Howe Truss with 8 panels
Span of the truss = L = 19+[(R-81)/16] m
Centre-to-centre spacing between trusses = S = 5+[(R-81)/40] m
Crown height = L/4 m
