C Abstraction In this part, the teacher will focus entirely on the lesson being
presented and ask more lead questions to lead the students in
reinforcing what they know and should know more.

Personality Development
Grooming and personality presentation may be correlated to the
wearing of uniform, personal hygiene, and personal appearance.
Having a "valet or butler's kit" will help maintain personal appearance
and assist guests with little emergency problems that could come up. A
valet's kit should include the following:
 Small pair scissors or clippers
 Tweezers
 Hair brush and comb
 Clothes' brush
 Polishing and application brushes for shoes
 Disposable gloves
 Needle and an assortment of threads and but
 Safety pins in different sizes
 Thumbtacks
 Nail varnish remover
 Stapler with staples
 Eraser
 Correction fluid
 Adhesive labels
 A small first-aid kit, making sure there are several sizes of
plasters
 Matches or lighter - a valet should always carry a lighter in his
pocket whenever a guest needs one in lighting a cigarette.

HOTS:
1. How important it is to develop one’s personality?
2. How are you going to maintain the kind of personality needed
in the workplace?

Good Grooming and Personal Hygiene

There are strict requirements concerning the grooming and personal

presentation standards of a valet or butler. One should be conscious of
issues concerning the following:

Wearing a Uniform
Significant Characteristics
1. It fits properly so it looks good, enables freedom of
movement, and is comfortable to wear.
2. It is kept clean. It is a standard requirement to have at least
one change of clothes available to them at work so uniforms
can be changed when they get dirty or look "tired." The
uniform must always be:
 Pressed, meaning it must be free of wrinkles and is
taken care of
 Stain-free and free from marks, dirt, or other mess
 In good condition: There must be no loose threads or
missing buttons.
3. Type and style of shoes to be worn such as black polished
leather shoes
4. Whether or not a nametag is worn. Most valets or butlers do
not wear a nametag as this is seen as demeaning to their
positions.
5. A jacket is worn by a valet and they commonly wear a
different color or style of epaulette to distinguish them from
other service staff.
6. A tie according to the required color

Standard grooming activities guarantee personal presentation and

hygiene. These activities to be considered or applied may include the
following:
 Regular washing or bathing
 Use of a suitable deodorant to help prevent perspiration
 Use of lightly scented aftershave or perfume. Strong perfume
that is predominant or overpowering must be avoided.
 Makeup must be kept neutral for women. There should be no
excessive eye shadow and no dramatic colors for lips or eyes.
 Good personal hygiene habits and practices. Cuts and sores
must be kept covered with a clean dressing. Using a
handkerchief or tissue is appropriate. There should be no
coughing or sneezing near guests or food.
 Men must be clean-shaven or have whiskers neatly trimmed.
Many valets need to shave twice per day to maintain a suitable
appearance.
 Hair must always be neat and tidy-brushed, combed, and tied
back (if necessary). Regular haircuts should be done to help
maintain style and suitable appearance.
 Hands and nails must be clean and well cared for at all times.
Women should wear only neutral polish, and avoid colors and
nail decorations. Men and women must have properly
manicured nails.
 Regular attention to teeth, meaning regular brushing and
dental check- ups to help avoid bad breath.
 Sufficient rest. It is necessary for a valet or butler to be alert
and awake.
 Always check appearance in a full-length mirror before
reporting for duty.
 Maintain good posture.
 Wear only basic jewelry.

HOTS:
1. How does a valet or butler wear and carry his uniform?
2. How does he present himself to guests?

Procedures in Performing Valet Services

Policies and procedures relating to the stipulation of valet or butler
services can be expected to be relatively standard across the industry.

Picking, Checking, Sorting, Endorsing, and Delivery of Laundry

One of the responsibilities of a valet or butler is to make sure that all

laundry used by the hotel as well as any guest laundry request are clean
and delivered on time. The following are the specific tasks of a valet or
butler:

 Responsible for the collection and delivery of guest laundry

needs like dry cleaning, pressing, and washing. Makes sure all
of the items are properly checked and labeled correctly
 Works closely with the housekeeping and laundry team to
deliver items on time
 Gives feedback to the laundry supervisor of any poor-quality
service or any problems like missing laundry items, delays, or
damaged items
 Ensures that all laundry is inspected before dispatched
 Makes sure that guest laundry, dry cleaning, and pressing are
collected and returned as quickly and efficiently as possible
 Checks carefully the quality of items and the exact number
before returning them to guests
Reports and Endorsements
A report will be kept for all laundry that is:
 issued:
 turned in for replacement; and
 damaged (include Job ID #).

Do not give any inventory to anyone without proper documentation.

Keep the documentation as a receipt of the exchange.

Packing, Unpacking, Storing, and Preparing of Guest Luggage

Proper handling of guest luggage during the guest's stay is very

important. If their belongings are properly handled, the guest will
surely feel that they are treated properly. Luggage is said to be
expensive. It contains items that may be irreplaceable or with
sentimental value. It is therefore the responsibility of the valet or butler
to ensure that all belongings of the guest are safe with no damaged,
lost, or stolen items.

In dealing with guest luggage, a valet or butler must treat it with care
and respect. Most importantly, avoid any damage and loss. Overseeing
the activities will ensure that nothing is forgotten or misplaced during
the transportation of the guests' luggage to their room.

It is crucial to pack, unpack, store, and prepare guest luggage.

Necessary action is to be taken to avoid problems and shortcomings.
Checking and inspecting the condition of the luggage first would be a
necessary step in managing them.

Dealing with guest luggage includes:

 unpacking of luggage and storing of items either in a room or
in another place within the premises, including the
organization of items for safety deposit
 storage of guest luggage;
 security of guest properties;

 arranging for cleaning or dry cleaning and repairs; and
 pressing of items.
Guest requests include:
 organizing repairs to equipment and sundry items;
 making bookings, including travel, accommodation, theater,

 dining, excursions, and tours;

 making sundry purchases on behalf of the guest as required,
such as flowers, gifts, and special needs;
 responding to unusual circumstances or issues that arise
during the guest's stay; and
 arranging for specific room service and delivery of room
service functions.

When unpacking guest luggage, the valet or butler must explain that he
needs to do the following:
1. Ask for keys from the guest to unlock their luggage. Make
sure to check first their luggage. If there is any indication of
tampering or any damages, inform the guest immediately.
2. The outside of the luggage must be inspected if clean of any
marks.
3. Put the luggage on a proper surface to avoid damage. A
luggage rack is the appropriate area to use.
4. Ask first for guest instructions before removing all items in
the luggage. Separate items that are clean; dirty items are sent
for laundering.
5. Place clothing and items neatly folded properly and stack
them accordingly.

a. Drawers:
 Clothes like jumpers, casual shorts, t-shirts, underwear, and
the like
b. Wardrobe:
 Clothes like shirts, trousers, coats, suits, skirts, gowns, and the
like
C Shoes:
 Should be put at the bottom of the wardrobe
 Separate in pairs the polished shoes and shoes requiring
attention
 Stack them in pairs and according to color and occasions
d. Bathroom or powder/make-up room:
 Toilet bags
 Make-up case
There is a need for sensitivity when unpacking guest luggage as the
guest may be tired and irritable from journey.
 It is the decision of the guest to receive valet service, never
force them. Work as quickly as possible for the guest to have
privacy.
 Some guests will want to unpack bags containing their
personal items but will be happy for valets to unpack the other
bags.
 Be aware of the guest's emotions.
