12. CONJUNCTIONS: BECAUSE , SO, BUT, AND, ALSO, OR

 Use conjunctions to join words, phrases, clauses or sentences. Conjunctions may have
diferent purposes. They may present a reason, a result, a parellelism and so on. Six
different conjunctions will be explained in this unit.

12.1. BECAUSE

 Use “because” to introduce the reason of an action or a situation.

 Answer the questions starting with” why” with “because”.
 Use “because” either at the beginning of a sentence or in the middle just after the main
clause. Do not use a comma before “because”.
 Do not forget that “because” comes before the sentence which describes the reason.
 The sequence of the tenses is not necessary. Different tenses can be used while connecting
sentences with “because”.

Reason Result
I slept only for an hour yesterday I’m very sleepy and tired now.
Because I slept only for an hour yesterday, I’m very sleepy and tired now.
I’m very sleepy and tired now because I slept only for an hour yesterday.
Why are you so happy?
Because today is my birthday.
I’m happy because today is my birthday.

NOTE: Do not use “because” before words or phrases. Use a sentence after “because”.

I didn’t call you because I didn’t have a mobile phone. Use a full sentence
I didn’t call you because a mobile phone. Don’t use a phrase.

 I didn’t forgive you because you lied to me.

 Ted loses all the matches because he isn’t good enough.
 Because my mother forgot to turn off the oven, she burned the cakes.
 Because Solomon is an honest man, everybody loves and trusts him.
 My boss helps me because he is a helpful man.

My dog can’t walk fast because he broke one of his legs.

12.2. SO

 Use “so” to emphasize the result of an action or situation. It has the same meaning as
“as a result”.
 Use “so” in the middle of two sentences and don’t forget that “so” comes before the
sentence which describes the result.
 Use a comma before “so” in general.

Reason Result
It was sunny and hot John went swimming with his friends
It was sunny and hot, so John went swimming with his friends.
We walk for hours We are really tired in the evenings.
We walk for hours, so we are really tired in the evenings.

NOTE: “So” and “because” are very different.“So”expresses the result, but “because” expresses
the reason.

Because Eray studies a lot every day, he speaks English very fluently now.

 He doesn’t have money, so he is unhappy.

 I live near the school, so I always go to school on foot.
 My grandfather is old, so he needs his glasses to read the newspaper.

 I don’t have a TV, so I usually read a book in the evenings.
 I have a mobile phone, so I call my friends at the weekends.
 I’m on a diet, so I don’t eat any chocolate.

12.3. BUT
 Use “but” to state an unexpected result or to make a contrast.
 Use it in the middle of the clause in general. Don’t forget to use a comma before “but”.

Main Clause Contrasting sentence

Thomas likes video games , but I hate them.
We didn’t have much money , but we were happy in the past.
Tony runs fast , but Emily doesn’t run so fast.

 I washed my clothes, but I forgot to iron them.

 I know this man, but he doesn’t know me.
 My brother expected to be the winner, but he was the last.
 I do some exercise every day, but I’m still overweight.

12.4. AND
 Use “and” to combine two parallel sentences, to connect words of the same group
(adjectives, nouns…) or independent clauses.
 If the subjects or the auxiliary verbs are the same in two independent clauses, there is no
need for the repetition of these items.
 Don’t forget to use a comma before “and” while connecting independent clauses.

James is listening to music, and his parents are cleaning the garden. Connect two
independent clauses.
The birds sing and (the birds) fly. Omit the same item .

The internet and computers are very important for me. Connect nouns.

European people are hardworking and intelligent. Connect adjectives.

She drew the picture quickly and beautifully. Connect adverbs.

 My father didn’t cook anything, and my mother got angry with him .
 My favourite novelists are Mark Twain and Henry James.
 The weather is really sunny and hot.

A: I like hamburgers and french fries. What about you?

B: No, I don’t like fast food, but my son does.

12.5. ALSO

 Use “also” to join parallel ideas in a sentence or to add extra information.

 Use “also” at the beginning or in the middle of the sentences, but if “also” is in the middle
it is used before the main verb and after the verb “to be”.
 If “also” is used at the beginning of sentence, use a comma (,).

Aldonsa speaks Spanish and also a little Turkish.

Fowles plays the violin, and he also learns to play the drums.
He is very intelligent. Also, he is extremely handsome.
He is very intelligent, and he is also very handsome.

 This house is very comfortable and also cheap.

 Computer games are useless. Also, they are harmful for kids.
 This parkis very green, and it is also very close to my house.
 It is a beautiful dress, but it’s small. Also, it is very expensive.

12.6. OR

 Use “or” to express and connect alternatives or different possibilities in a sentence.

 In general, use it between words, phrases or sentences. There is no need for a comma
before “or”.

You can eat a hamburger or toast.

Do you cook at home or eat out?
Go there on foot or take the bus.

 Do you listen to me or not?

 I go for a walk in the mornings or do some exercise at home.
 Wait here or come with me.
 Telling lies or hiding the truth is not a solution.

I eat a sandwich in the mornings. Also, I drink a glass of fruit juice.

I go online on my tablet or on my notebook.
