Transport System - Plants

The need for transport system

-organisms are made up of cells
-these cells need:

nutrients

oxygen

-Multicellular organisms are made up of billions of cells so,

a mean of transport system is needed for those substances to
be delivered to all of the cells. (Most cells are far away
from the source of nutrients)

Transport system in plants

💡 main substances that plants need in order to survive:

light, air, water, and nutrients.

Plants need nutrients to grow healthily:

nutrients: mineral salts dissolved in water (calcium,
magnesium, sodium, etc. . . )

Plants also need water:

for photosynthesis (require CO2, water, and light)

photosynthesis produces food(glucose) for the plants

transporting nutrients and minerals from the soil by

dissolving into it

and other processes such as cooling

Components of transport system in plants

-Water and minerals are transported from roots to other parts
of the plant such as leaves.

Vascular bundle is made up of Xylem and Phloem:

Xylem

transporting water and dissolved minerals throughout

the plant

consists of long hollow tubes that pass from the

roots to the leaves

one direction only (one-way)

Phloem

transporting food in the form of sugar

these sugars are made via photosynthesis in the

leaves

the sugars are then transported via phloem to the

other parts of the plant

can flow both directions (two-way)

Processes involved in the transport of
substances
1. Diffusion

2. Osmosis

Diffusion?

Definition: Diffusion is the movement of molecules from

a region of higher concentration to a region of lower
concentration.

Osmosis?

Definition: Osmosis is the net movement of water

molecules from a region of higher concentration of water
molecules to a region of lower concentration of water
molecules through a partially permeable membrane.

permeable - a material or membrane which

allows liquids or gases to pass through it.

📌 Diffusion and osmosis occur due to a difference in
concentrations
