Invitation of The 45th Chess Olympiad
Invitation of The 45th Chess Olympiad
On behalf of the Hungarian Chess Federation and the Local Organizing Committee of the 2024 Chess Olympiad and FIDE
Congress, it is my pleasure to invite all FIDE Members and Affiliated Organisations to Budapest, Hungary, on the occasion of the
45th FIDE Chess Olympiad and the 95th FIDE Congress to be held in mid-September 2024.
Hungary gave home to the first unofficial Chess Olympiad for teams in 1926 and won the first two official editions in 1927 and
1928, respectively. We were there at the beginning, and now we are back to celebrate FIDE’s 100th anniversary at the centenary
FIDE Congress during the Olympiad.
In the recent years, the sports policy of our Government brought a couple of major sport events to Hungary from FINA World
Championships through UEFA Europa League Final to the World Athletics Championships. It is an honour for us to host all the
nations, and to repeatedly be a meeting point for the international world of sports.
But chess is even more than this. Chess is more than just international. It is global, as we have a common language. This is of
exceptional value. Let us capitalise on this and make it a wonderful event for all of us! We’ll try to do our best, looking forward to
seeing you in Budapest, Hungary, from 10 to 23 September at the 2024 Chess Olympiad and FIDE Congress!
It is my honor and pleasure to invite you to the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad and the
FIDE Congress 2024, scheduled for September of this year in Budapest, Hungary.
Chess Olympiads stand as the pinnacle celebration of our sport, bringing together
players from countries and territories worldwide. They showcase the best and most
promising talent in chess and shine a light on the future of our beloved game.
FIDE Congress 2024 is the most important gathering and decision-making format of
201 member federations of the International Chess Federation.
In this centenary year of our great organization, it is fitting that this Olympiad will be
hosted in Hungary – the country of the winners of the first chess Olympiad.
Hungary is a country which has given and continues to give so much to chess. Géza
Maróczy, Andor Lilienthal, Laszlo Szabo, Lajos Portisch, Andras Adorjan, Zoltan Rib-
li, Peter Leko, and, of course, the Hungarian chess wonders – the Polgar sisters – are
among the many jewels in Caissa’s chess crown that this great country has produced.
FIDE is grateful to the Hungarian government and the Hungarian Chess Federation
for hosting and supporting chess. With a strong chess tradition and experience in or-
ganizing major events, Budapest will undoubtedly make an excellent host and, truly
show that “Chess is at home in Hungary” - as the motto for this Olympiad goes.
This Chess Olympiad will be unique for many things, but I would specifically like to
mention that – for the first time – we will have a team of Refugees playing in the
event. No matter the place or the circumstances, all chess players are members of the
same Family and they belong together. For this Olympiad we are hopeful to see an
increased number of teams in the Women’s event, showcasing our commitment to
promoting gender equality in the sport.
As we look toward FIDE entering its second century, it is with hope and excitement
that we look towards Budapest. May the 45th Chess Olympiad be a magical experi-
ence for everyone!

The first Hungarian chess association, the Chess Club of Pest (the predecessor of the Hungarian
Chess Association), was founded in the 19th century, according to some opinions in 1839. Its found-
ers were the best-known Hungarian chess players of the time, József Szén, Vince Grimm and János
Jakab Löwenthal. In 1849, the chess club was disbanded, and its re-establishment was only permit-
ted in 1864, with Count Ödön Széchenyi as its chairman and patron, and the world famous music
composer and enthusiastic chess player Ferenc Erkel as its vice-chairman, who later held the title
from 1865 to 1893 until his death.
The first (unofficial) team Olympiad was hosted by Budapest in 1926. Encouraged by Paris 1924 ex-
perience, the authorities of FIDE decided to hold a great chess event. There were a number of indi-
vidual tournaments ran: the masters, the open, and the women’s tournament. The team competi-
tion was held too, and six teams applied. The player attitude was appropriate to the conditions of
the time, e.g. Árpád Vajda, who worked as a police officer, went to the afternoon rounds from his
workplace. The older players played card games after the tournament games.
Budapest is the city of culture, sport, traditions, and games. Chess symbolizes all of these: a tradi-
tional game and sport with culture-forming potential. Playing chess is part of bathing in Budapest,
spending free time in the parks or cafés, and it’s present in almost every school of the City.
