GENERAL INFORMATION

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

The Model 21OLC is a wideband RF power amplifier, covering an instan

taneous frequency range from 8 KHz to 225 MHz, at a power output level
in excess of 10 Watts into a 50 Ohm bad. MOS-FETS are used throughout
the entire circuitry. They provide good petformance and reliability
for a modest increase in cost.

Having an overall system gein in excess of 40 dB, the 21OLC is ideally

suited for wideband power sweeping. The amplifier is compatible with
most RF signal generators capable of 1 mW of signal output. Although
the system has no special provisions designed in for VSWR protection,
the MOS-FETS by themselves exhibit high tolerance to bad mismatches.
The 21OLC is protected from damage to overload and mismatches (open and
short circuits). It is suggested, however, to keep the bad VSWR below
4:1 at full power output.

A Power and Voits RMS meter has been added to the front panel to facili
tate monitoring the amplifier output signal. The upper scale is used to
measure Watts into 50 Ohms and the lower scale provides a convenient
readout for RMS Voits into a mismatch.

CIRCUIT DESIGN

The system consists of three basic blocks:

a. +28V Regulated Power Supply
b. 10 Watt Power Amplifier
c. Power/Voits RMS Meter

REGULATED POWER SUPPLY

The power supply is factory adjusted for 28 Volt output ± .2 Volt.

The amplifiet requires 2.7 — 2.9 Amperes under no signal operation. A
slight increase in drain current will occur when the amplifier is pushed
beyond 10 Watts output. This increase cutrent is limited to 3.3 Amperes
by the power supply current sensor. Any attempt to push the amplifier
output beyond this point will result in a loss of DC power supply voltage
and, consequently, a drop in RF power output. Resetting of the power
) supply current limiter is automatic after the input signal is removed ot
reduced to the 1 -2 mW level. Current limiting does vary with frequency.
At the 10w end of the frequency range (up to 100 MHz) the amplifier will
produce in excess of 15 Watts before limiting. At the 200 MHz range it
may limit around 12 Watts output.

RF POWER. AMPLIFIER

The RF power amplifier consists of a four stage all MOS-FET RF amplifier

mounted on a single P.C. board which is mounted on the bottom side of the
cabinet in an inverted position. A signal in the frequency range from
8 KHz to 225 MHz, up to 1 mW entering the input connectot, is first fed
thorugh a 3 dB constant impedance T attenuator for good input VSWR match.
Cl is a coupling capacitor and so is C7. The signal now reaches Q1 gate
and is amplified by about 12 dB with some feedback in the drain-gate
circuit for stability. High frequency compensation is accomplished through
C4, C5, C39-R48 and C30. The output is passed on to the gate of Q2.

3
RF POWER AMPLIFIER — continued

Frequency compensation is provided by R14, C9, R18—L3. Additional

compensation is possible through dO, Cli, C12, C22 and R21 in the source
circuit. C15 is a coupling capacitor. Again we find some small amount
of 10w frequency attenuation ptovided by R26, C17, R47 and L5. C20 and
C21 are coupling capacitors for the final stage input circuit.

The final amplifier is matched to the Q3 driver with transformer Ti. This
transformer is a coaxial type ultra broadband ferrite type transformer,
also serving as a phase inverter in this circuit. The bias regulator D2
sets the voltage to R31 at a fixed 10 Volts. R31 is used to adjust the
drain current through Q4/Q5 to 1.3 Amperes each FET. R39 is used to adjust
for best harmonic balance. C33 and C44 are high frequency peaking capaci
tors. Low frequency attenuation is provided through the drain to gate
feedback circuits in Q4 and Q5. Please note: LiO and L13 inductors are
located outside the P.C. board next to the heatsink. This amplifier does
not require any adjustments other than bias after transistor replacement.

POWER METER

A diode-type sampling meter is provided to permit handy monitoring öf the

output signal. The meter is calibrated in Watts on the upper scale for
50 Ohm loads. 1f any other loads are suspected, it is recommended to use
the lower scale calibrated in Voits RMS. This voltage reading will be
accurate for any bad within ± 10% if calibration is checked directly at
the front panel output connector only. For mismatched bad at distant
bocations, the meter accuracy will be greatly reduced.

COOLIG

Under no circumstances should the air fbow be permitted obstruction for

greater than one minute. The internal temperature of the heatsink and
transistors may reach a critical stage, enabling the temperature protec

tion circuit which will shut down operation. Reset is automatic after
sufficient cooling has taken place. The fan is a 115VAC type connected
across the primary of the power transformer in a way that assures 115V
at any line voltage.

5
PLACING EQUIPMENT IN OPERATION -

Connect a 50 Ohm bad capable of handling 20 Watts of CW power to

the output connector. Connect a 50 Ohm signal soutce (minimum of 1 mW)
to the input connector. Reduce the signal soutce output to minimum.
Vetify that your AC line voltage agrees with the intetnal wiring of the
21OLC (note the serial number plate). Tutn equipment “ON”. The AC “ON”
light should illuminate and the fan (bbower) should be heard clearly
picking up speed.

Watch the panel meter and increase the signal source output until a
meter reading is observed. 1f your bad is a good 50 Ohm bad, you can
tead the output power directly off the meter scale.

CAUTION: NEVER RUN FULL POWER WITH THE LOAD DISCONNECTED. THIS MAY
CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE OUTPUT TRANSISTORS.

FUSES

An AC line fuse is bocated in the rear panel. 1f it bbows, chances are

your amplifier has a problem. It is suggested that a check be performed
ptior to teplacing the fuse to avoid damage to the equipment.
