Course Title : Geometric Design and Highway Materials

Course Code : 20CEC21 Academic Year: 2022-23
Course Structure : 3-1-0-3
Course Coordinator : Mr. U. Siva Rama Krishna
Instructor(S) : Mr. U. Siva Rama Krishna
Course Description:

Transportation Engineering is a branch of civil engineering that is involved in the

planning, design, operation, and maintenance of safe and efficient transportation
systems. This course is designed to make the students aware of various developments
that took place in the stream of highway engineering in India. Various geometrics
related to rural and urban highways and their design specifications were thoroughly
covered in the syllabus. In addition to this the important concepts related to traffic
management like rotary design at traffic intersections, Interchanges and highway
materials and concrete mixes characterisation were included in the subject.

OBJECTIVES:

This course is designed for fifth semester civil engineering Students. The course is
intended to make the students know and understand the concepts related to Highway
and Traffic Engineering in Transportation Engineering.
The main objective of the course is to:

i)Design for individual elements of rural and urban street geometry

ii) Design of Rotary Intersection, understand at grade and grade separated

intersections.
iii)Material Characterization of Highway materials and different concrete
mixes.
Course Outcomes

1.Summarize various considerations for rural and urban arterials

2.Explain the characteristics and considerations for rotary intersections
3.Describe the optimal characteristics of subgrade soil materials
4.Evaluate the characteristics of bitumen and bituminous mixes
5.Explain durability and quality of flexible pavements
6.Explain the components and the construction of cement concrete pavements

Syllabus:
