Background
~~~~~~~~~~
This article will outline the installation of an HKS turbo timer III in the
bottom compartment of the Compact Disc storage console (between the seats).
I decided to mount the TT in the center console for these reasons:
1) to keep it hidden
2) the bottom compartment is nearly useless for anything else
3) there isn't any other place to put in on/in the dash.
The only other choice for hidden mounting you have is to mount it in the
glove compartment.
What You'll Need
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Parts: (1) HKS Turbo Timer IV - P/N 4101-RA006 \
(1) 3SG/TOY 91 wiring harness - P/N 4076EC-1000BX +---- All this
came in the TT kit.
(1) 3 Pin to 4 Pin extension /
(1) 1 wire /
User Supplied:
Wire (I used 14 gauge),
9 female "bullet" connectors (crimp type)
9 male "bullet" connectors (crimp type)
1 wire tap connector
Double faced tape
Velcro strips
Tools: Phillips screwdriver
Socket wrench
Multimeter or voltmeter
Exacto knife or similar sharp/fine knife
Electrical tape
Pliers
Wire cutters
Time: 2-3 hours
Step 1: Mounting the Turbo Timer Unit
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Remove the four screws holding the CD console to the fire wall/center
divider.
Two screws are in the top compartment and two are in the lower compartment.
Look at the back of the console after you remove it. You will see a ~1.5cm
"guide" tab that fits into a corresponding hole in the center divider.
(Near the bottom of the unit)
Using an Exacto knife and working from the back, cut a hole through the
back using the sides of the guide to define the size of the hole.
This hole will be just big enough to route the wires from the TT from the
inside of the console, out the back, and under the center divider cover.
In order to get the wires through this small hole, it is necessary to
temporarily remove the plastic shell of the connector on the end of the wire
harness from the TT. This can be done by compressing the small tabs on the
metal blades using a pair of small pliers (or a similar tool). MAKE NOTE of
the wire colors and positions BEFORE you remove them, in case you didn't,
here's the diagram:
The shelf in the CD console can be removed by simply pulling it forward. I
mounted the unit to the bottom of the shelf using velcro strips and double
faced tape. This may seem like an unstable mounting method, but believe
me, it isn't going to move! The unit is really light and three strips of
velcro attached to the top of it and the underside of the shelf are more
than enough to hold it.
This completes the mounting process. Don't reinstall the console yet! Go onto
the next step.
Step 2: Disassembling Dash and Center Divider
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To install the wiring harness into the ignition harness, it is necessary to
remove the lower dash panel under the steering wheel. There are four screws
holding this panel on. (Roughly one per corner). There are also three push
on/pull off type clips that hold the panel in place. Pull the panel toward
the
seat and slightly down toward the floor to remove it.
NOTE: There may be a second metal panel underneath this outer panel which
you must remove using a socket driver or wrench. My car doesn't have
this panel, but other MR2 owners have reported having it.
You will also want to remove the center divider cover at this point too. On
the side of the divider, you'll find two screws per side (covered with screw
caps), in the middle of the divider and at the rear. Carefully remove the
screw covers with a small screwdriver or similar tool. Next unclip the
leather
shift boot cover by pulling up on it (held in place with clips only). Now
remove the shifter-area cover that the leather boot clips into by pulling up
on the rear of the plate. The front of this plate has two tabs that fit under
the dash cover that covers the stereo area, so you *must* start by pulling up
the back and angle it out. Now remove the two screws holding the front of the
center divider down. You can now remove the divider cover by pulling up on
the
back first.
Step 3: Installing The Wires
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First off, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery (or don't if you
like to live on the edge)
Locate the ignition harness which should be below the ignition cylinder.
Install the wiring harness by unplugging the ignition harness and plugging
the
two ends into the wiring harness.
Next, locate the parking brake switch wire. On my car, this wire ran up from
the parking brake, behind the shifter area, and disappearing into the cable
guide running along the left side of the divider. This wire should have about
+12 volts with the parking brake off and 0 volts with it on. Use the wire
tap and the HKS supplied GRAY wire to tap into this wire. I had to remove a
section of the rubber tubing covering this wire first.
Connect the BLACK wire from the TT to the vehicle chassis (ground). I used
the rear bracket holding down the two shifter cable guides. Although this
ground worked for me, it may not be a suitable ground on your car. Please
check it with a multimeter first.
The HKS kit includes a 3 pin to 4 pin harness adapter. This adapter connects
the ignition harness to the TT unit. As this adapter is at most 10cm long
you will need to cut this adapter and extend it to the proper length to
reach from the front dash to the CD console.
Cut the wires of the 3-4 adapter at the middle point. Strip about 1cm of
the wire sheathing from each of the wires and crimp on either the male or
the female bullet connectors. I decided to use bullet connectors so that
the wiring harness can be removed later on if needed. You could directly
solder these wires if you wanted to.
Estimate the length of wire needed to reach from the front dash to the
rear console and cut four wires of this length. Strip the ends of these
wires and crimp on the rest of the bullet connectors.
Additionally, you may want to use some electrical tape to hold all the wires
together in one bundle.
Route the new extension "bus" through the left side of the cable guide that
runs beside the ashtray and heater controls. Try to make sure that the wires
do not stick out above the height of the cables that are already installed
there as the center console may not fit back on. I routed the wires through
the left side of the front on the console then under the left shifter cable
guide and into the middle "channel" between the two shifter guides. I picked
the middle because if you look at the underside of the center console cover,
you'll notice two "fins" that fit into the spaces to the outer side of the
shifter cable guides and could pinch the wires if you run them in these outer
channels.
Once you have the wires routed and in place, connect the two ends to the
appropriate connectors.
At this point, you may want to check your wiring for shorts using the
multimeter *BEFORE* you apply the power to it.
You are are not using the harness adapter from HKS, you'll have to splice
and dice the ignition wiring according to this diagram:
Step 4: Testing the Turbo Timer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are satisfied with your wiring, reconnect the negative side of the
battery and test the turbo timer as per the HKS instructions. Make sure that
the safety cut-off switch from the parking brake works. (If the timer is
activated and the parking brake is released, the engine should shut off
immediately). If the timer is activated without the parking brake engaged,
the engine should shut off in about 5 seconds.
Step 5: Reassemble Car
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reinstall the center console cover, CD console, lower front-dash panel(s),
and
anything else you may have taken apart. :-)
Congratulations! You should now have a well hidden and nice clean
installation of your HKS turbo timer.
Operation of Turbo Timer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you didn't receive any english instructions on the operation of the timer,
here is a brief synopsis of the functions:
The timer has two basic modes of operation, TIMER mode and ADD mode.
TIMER Mode
----------
ON/OFF - Turn the timer on or off. Unless the timer was manually turned off,
the timer will automatically turn ON (but not activate) with the
ignition each time the vehicle is driven, and the time previously
selected will also be retained in memory.
SELECT TIME - To select the idle time, press the UP or DOWN button to toggle
to the desired time. The available selections are as follows:
0.00s - 0.30s - 1.00s - 1.30s - 2.00s - 2.30s - 3.00s -
4.00s - 5.00s - 6.00s - 7.00s - 8.00s - 9.00s - 9.59s -
9.99s
RESET TIME - To reset the time to 0.00s, press the UP and DOWN buttons
simultaneously for at least 1 second.
ALTERNATING DISPLAY - To make the display alternate between the initial time
selected and the time remaining in the countdown, press
the UP and POWER buttons simultaneously for at least
one
second. (Be sure to press the UP button first) Press
the sequence a second time to stop the alternating
display.
RESET TURBO TIMER - To reset all functions and modes (including the
cumulative
hours recorded in the ADD mode), press the ALARM and
POWER buttons simultaneously. (Be sure to press the ALARM
button first)
ADD MODE (Engine Hour Meter)
----------------------------
ON/OFF - When the timer is in TIMER mode, press the ALARM and DOWN buttons
simultaneously for at least one second. The cumulative number of
hours the engine has running should appear on the display. To
return to TIMER mode, press the sequence a second time. If the
ignition key is turned OFF, the display will revert to the TIMER
display automatically. The timer will revert back to ADD mode the
next time the car is started. (ie. whichever mode the timer is
in, TIMER or ADD, will be remembered and restored)
FLASHING DISPLAY - The timer can be programmed to flash ON and OFF while in
ADD mode to indicate that the timer is recording the
number of hours of engine operations. To turn the flashing
display on or off, press the UP and POWER buttons
simultaneously for at least one second. (Be sure to press
the UP button first)
RESET TIME - To reset the cumulative hours recorded in the ADD mode, press
the
UP and DOWN buttons simultaneously for at least one second.
