Call Charge Calculation Help

This guide explains how CA Call Accounting calculates call charges, and how to programme the call charge settings in CA Call Accounting.

Overview
This overview explains the basic procedure for programming the call charge settings. It also explains the details of how CA Call Accounting calculates call charges.

Programming Procedure Summary

To access the programming screens, from the web client click the Options tab, and then click the Call Charge Settings link. 1. Enable call charge calculations for trunks Click the CO link, and you can select the trunks to calculate call charges for, and select the call charge table to use for each trunk. See CO. 2. Programme the time table Click the Time Table link, and you can assign one of 3 call charge ratesPeak/Off Peak/Economyto each hour of each day of the week. You can programme up to 4 time tables. You can also programme the charge rate settings for days you define as holidays. See Time Table. 3. Define holidays Click the Holiday Table link, and you can define certain days of the year to be holidays. Days that are defined as holidays are charged based on the Holiday row of the time table, and not the day of the week. See Holiday Table. 4. Programme the call charge table Click the Charge Table link, and for each call charge table, you can programme different charge settings based on the leading digits of dialled telephone numbers. The same leading digits can have different charge settings for each table. You can also set the call charges for each charge rate (Peak/Off Peak/Economy). The trunk that is carrying the call determines which call charge table is used to calculate call charges. You can programme the following parameters for each set of leading digits: Flat Charge A single charge that is applied once at the beginning of a conversation. Flat Charge Duration The duration after the flat charge is applied until unit charges are applied. Unit Charge A charge that is applied once after the flat charge duration, and then periodically after that. Unit Charge Duration The duration that determines how often the unit charge is applied. See Charge Table.

How Call Charges Are Calculated

When an external call is made, CA Call Accounting uses the time table and call charge table that are assigned to the trunk to calculate call charges. It uses the day of the week and the leading digits of the dialled number to determine the charge rates.

Note If the dialled number does not match any leading number stored in the call charge table, the call charge for row 99 is applied to the call. Therefore, it is recommended to set the values for row 99.

Calculation Method
The following chart illustrates how call charges are calculated.

Call Charge Calculation Help

Details a) If the call duration is less than the flat duration: Call Charge = Flat Charge b) If the call duration is more than the flat duration:
Call Charge = Flat Charge Unit Charge Unit Charge Whole Number Part of Call Duration Flat Duration

Unit Duration

Calculation Example (using the example tables in Programming Example) If the dialled number is 03123456, and the call is made at peak time: a) Calculation when the call duration is 160 s:
Call Charge = 100 Flat Charge

b) Calculation when the call duration is 250 s:

Call Charge = 100 Flat Charge Unit Charge Unit Charge 250 30 Unit Duration 180 Call Duration Flat Duration 50 50 2 = 250

= 2.333...

Conditions
When the flat charge duration is set to 0, the total of the flat charge and unit charge is applied immediately after a pre-programmed length of time (programmed in the PBX settings), or when the outside party answers the call. [Example] a) Flat Charge Duration: 0 s; Flat Charge: 0; Unit Charge Duration: 60 s; Unit Charge: 10
Charge 40 30 20 10 Waiting time before the call duration counter starts*1 60 s Duration

Charge 140 130 120 110

Waiting time before the call duration counter starts*1 60 s Duration

When the unit charge duration is set to 0, the flat charge is charged after a pre-programmed length of time (programmed in the PBX settings), or when the outside party answers the call. Then, the unit charge is charged just once, when the flat charge duration expires. [Example] a) Flat Charge Duration: 60 s; Flat Charge: 10; Unit Charge Duration: 0 s; Unit Charge: 100
Charge 110

* In this case, Flat Charge Duration and Unit Charge Duration could be any value. Flat charges and unit charges for each call charge rate (Peak/Off Peak/Economy) consist of up to 7 digits excluding the decimal point (e.g., 12345.67). The charge of a call can consist of no more than 7 digits. For example, if the number of decimal places is set to 3, the maximum call charge will be calculated as 9 999.999 even if the actual charge exceeds this.

The waiting time before the call duration counter starts is programmed in the PBX settings and not in CA Call Accounting.

Charge Table fields

Leading Digits (non-editable) This field displays the leading digits programmed on the Leading Digits screen. Flat Charge (currency) The amount entered in this field is charged once when a call is established. Flat Charge Duration (seconds) This field is the amount of time in seconds, after the flat charge is applied, before the unit charge is applied. Unit Charge (currency) The amount entered in this field is added to the call charge once after the Flat Charge Duration has elapsed, and then once every Unit Charge Duration seconds. Unit Charge Duration (seconds) This field is the amount of time between adding the Unit Charge to the total call charge. Note If a dialled number does not match any leading digits, the call charges are calculated based on the settings in row 99. If a dialled number matches 2 or more sequences of leading digits, the call charges are calculated based on the longest match. See How Call Charges Are Calculated for an example of a charge calculation.
