SUBJECT: SCIENCE CLASS: VI

Chapter 3 : Separation of Substances

DEFINE :-
1.Threshing:- The process of separating grains from stalks by
beating on a hard surface or by a machine is called threshing.

2. Winnowing :- The process of separation of heavier and lighter

components of a mixture by wind or by air is called winnowing.

3. Hand picking:- The process of separation of slightly large sized

impurities by picking by hand is called hand picking.

4. Filtration:- The process of separation of insoluble solids from a

liquid by using a filter or a strainer is called filtration.

5. Sedimentation:- The process of settling down of heavier

components in a mixture after adding water to it is called
sedimentation.

6. Saturated solution:- A solution in which no more of a

substance (solute) can be dissolved is called saturated solution.
DISTINGUISH BETWEEN:-
1. Evaporation and Condensation

Evaporation Condensation

1. The process of conversion 1.The process of conversion of

of a liquid into its vapour vapour into its liquid is
is called evaporation. called condensation.

2. Evaporation occurs due to 2.Condensation occurs due to

heating. cooling.

3. Eg:- Changing water into

3.Eg:- Changing water vapour
water vapour.
into water.

2. Sedimentation and Decantation

Sedimentation Decantation

1.The process of settling down 1.The process of separation of

of heavier components of a top layer of liquid from a
mixture after adding water to mixture after sedimentation
it is called sedimentation. is called decantation.

2. Eg:- Sand can be separated 2. Eg:- Water can be separated

from water by sedimentation. from sand by decantation.
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING :-
Q 1. Why do we need to separate different components of a
mixture? Give examples.
Ans:-
1. To separate non -useful components.
Eg:- Separation of tea leaves from tea.
2. To separate harmful components or impurities.
Eg:- Separation of stones from rice.
3. To separate two useful components
Eg:- Separating butter from butter milk.

Q 2. What is winnowing? Where it is used?

Ans:-
The process of separation of heavier and lighter components
of a mixture by wind or blowing air is called winnowing.
Farmers use this method to separate lighter husk particles
from heavier seeds of grain.

Q 3. What is sieving? Where it is used?

Ans:-

1. The process of separation of bigger and smaller sized

particles of a mixture by using a sieve is called sieving.

2. Sieving is used to remove husk and stones from wheat before

grinding. Sieving is used at construction sites to remove
pebbles from sand.
Q4. How will you separate sand and water from their mixture?
Ans:-
1. From a mixture of sand and water, sand can be separated by
sedimentation.
2. Water on the top can be separated by decantation.
3. The mixture of sand and water can be separated by filtration
also.
Q 5. How would you obtain clear water from a sample of
muddy water?
Ans:-
We can obtain clean water from muddy water by the following
steps.

1. Allow muddy water to stand for half an hour .

2. Mud particles will settle down at the bottom of the container
by sedimentation.
3. Slightly tilt the container with out disturbing the mud
particles. Separate the water on the top into another
container by decantation.
4. If the water is still muddy, filter it by using a piece of cloth or
a filter paper that has even smaller pores.

Q6. Lemonade can be prepared by mixing lemon juice and

sugar in water. You wish to add ice to cool it. Should you
add ice to the lemonade before or after dissolving sugar? In
which case it is possible to dissolve more sugar?
Ans:-
We can add ice to lemonade after dissolving sugar. It is easy to
dissolve sugar in normal water than in cold water.
Solubility increases on heating.
Extra Questions
Q 7. How is common salt obtained from sea water?
Ans :-
1. Sea water contains many salts dissolved in it. One of these salts
is common salt.
2. Sea water is allowed to stand in shallow pits.
3. Sea water gets heated by sunlight and slowly turn into water
vapour by the process of evaporation.
4. In a few days, sea water gets evaporated completely leaving
behind solid salts.
5. From this mixture of salts, common salt can be separated by
further purification.
WORKSHEET

FILL IN THE BLANKS

1. Sand from water can be separated by the process of

sedimentation.

2. Common salt is obtained from sea water by the process of

evaporation.

3. Husk is separated from rice by the process of winnowing.

4. Stones can be separated from rice by the process of hand picking.

5. Grains can be separated from stalks by the process of threshing.

6. More of a substance can be dissolved in a solution by heating it.

7. Water dissolves different amounts of soluble substances in it.

8. To separate tea leaves from tea we use a strainer.

9. Handpicking method can be used to separate large sized

impurities from rice, wheat etc.
10. Different sized particles of a mixture can be separated by the
process of sieving and filtration.

TRUE or FALSE

1. We separate sugar from tea by filtration. False

2. When you boil salt water, only water will get evaporated. True

3. We can dissolve more sugar in its saturated solution. False

4. A sieve is used to separate heavier and lighter particles of a
mixture. False

Q8. FILL IN THE BLANKS (P-44 TEXT BOOK)

1.The method of separating seeds of paddy from its stalks is called

threshing.

2. When milk cooled after boiling, is poured onto a piece of cloth, the cream
(malai) is left behind on it. This process of separating cream from milk is
an example of filtration.

3. Salt is obtained from sea water by the process of evaporation.
