Lesson Title: Cycle 1, Speaking Session: Familiar Topics

Materials:
Lesson Objectives:
1. To practice speaking fluency (speed, accuracy, and
prosody) by reciting a memorized excerpt
References:
2. To orally produce a focused and cohesive statement, 8 -
12 sentences long.
3. To self-reflect on speaking skills.

Welcome to session 4! I hope you are doing well today. Our session today is a speaking session.
Expect to listen to a recording of speaking samples and expect also to record yourselves speaking.
It will be fun!

A. INTRODUCTION (2 mins)
Read: Speaking proficiency for this course will target three skills – talking about oneself, talking
about familiar topics, and talking about a new topic. There are no right and wrong answers, but
instead you will be practicing how to say things in a clearer and more concise manner. Your work
during speaking sessions includes taking turns speaking and listening to a partner or a small
group, presenting to a big group, and one-on-one interviews with your teacher. In RAD Learning,
your tasks will be presented through short audio and/or video recordings. You will also hear
recordings of your teacher as samples for the activities. Your teacher will let you know how to
submit these files.

Make full use of the time - do all tasks diligently. Speak clearly and accurately. Record
yourself several times before sending your final output so you can go back and listen to what you
said and how you said things. Listen attentively to others also because listening also improves
language proficiency.

B. LESSON TARGETS
Keep today’s lesson targets in mind as we go through today’s session:
□ To talk about familiar things in a cohesive 3-4 sentence statement
□ To describe and discuss information presented in a chart
□ To reflect on speaking skills I need to work on

C. DEVELOPING THE SKILL

Activity 1: Pronunciation and Prosody Practice (15 mins)
🖉Instructions:
1.1. First, read the following paragraphs lifted from the newspaper, Manila Times. Then by
yourself, practice saying it aloud. Remember to use the appropriate tone and pace.
Choose which excerpt you want to present and record.

Option 1: The primary role of Filipino fathers remains traditional in the

country — that is to be the breadwinner of the family. As such, fathers often
take a backseat when it comes to hands-on parenting, with their time spent
instead on working day and night to provide for the family.

However, as the common saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child.

Science has shown dads are meant to be more than just a secondary parent,
with studies demonstrating the presence of an involved father has a great
impact on early childhood development.

Option 2: A present father does not necessarily mean one who is always in
close proximity. Sometimes, fathers live in a different household, are based
in a different country, or are faced with other circumstances that cause them
to be physically separated from his child. The modern ways for fathers to
remain engaged include phone calls, video chats, and emails.

The way the mother and father interact also has a significant impact on the

child, with studies showing that a good mother-father relationship helps

promote better psychological and emotional health of the child. When
parents work together as a team, their efforts are amplified by each other’s
individual strengths, and they become more responsive, affectionate, and
involved with their children.

1.2 Listen to your teacher’s recording/video of the excerpts. You can practice along with your
teacher’s recording.

1.3 Record yourself and send your output to your teacher. Let’s use the following
naming conventions for all files you will submit to your teacher:

Santos, Leandro_Speaking #1 ENG189_030421

Activity 2: Brainstorm (5 mins)

🖉Instructions: A good speech is one where you can prepare and organize your thoughts well. For
this next speaking task, you will be asked to talk about your hometown. To prepare and organize
your thoughts, create a concept map about your hometown. What is a concept map? A concept
map is a visual organization of information usually in the form of a flow chart, table, timelines,
Venn diagrams, graphic organizers, or other forms of charts. An example is given below.

What you need to do is list words that come to mind when you think of your “hometown” and
organize these words to show how they are related. A basic concept map on hometown can look
like this:
