Theory:

Controlled rectifiers are used to get variable DC voltage from an AC source of fixed voltage. For
high power applications, three-phase rectifier drives are used. In this converter, SCR are fired in
sequence of their number with a phase difference of 60 degree. Each SCR conducts for 120
degree and two SCR conduct at a time- one from upper group and other from lower group.
Transfer of current from an outgoing to incoming SCR can take place when the respective line
voltage is of such a polarity that not only forward bias the incoming SCR, but also leads to
reverse biasing of the outgoing. Firing angle for the SCR is measured from that instant when the
respective line voltage is zero and starts increasing.

The circuit diagram for a three-phase full converter feeding a dc motor is shown in figure. A
free-wheeling diode FD is connected in parallel with the load, which is connected across the o/p
terminals of the full controlled converter. By controlling the firing angle, we can control voltage
applied to motor and thereby speed of DC motor can be varied.
Procedure:

1. First connect three-phase bridge converter circuit to the three-phase bridge firing circuit
to give the firing pulses at different angles.
2. Connect R,Y and B phases of firing circuit and converter circuit with the variac.
3. Join armature and field terminals of the DC motor with the converter circuit.
4. Connect CRO to the o/p of the full wave converter.
5. Observe the waveforms in CRO by varying firing angle of the SCRs.

Precautions:

1. Keep the variac to minimum position at the time of starting.

2. Keep proper phase sequence of 3-phase supply and the 3-phase firing circuit.
3. Observe the proper direction of rotation of DC motor.
