How to Use This Electrical Safety Checklist


This checklist can help keep your home safe and give you peace of mind.
When completing this checklist, be sure to mark off the items that are looking good,
or look like they are a cause for concern like this:

Please note that no checklist can be a substitute for an inspection by a licensed electrician.
There may be some warning signs that a homeowner could miss but a trained electrician will notice.
When in doubt, always opt for an inspection.

Outlets and Cords

Are all wires appropriately covered (no exposed wires)?


Are all outlets and switches working properly?
No discolouration.

No buzzing.

No crackling sounds.

No broken covers.

Are your outlets cool to the touch?


Do you have ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs)
installed in your kitchen and bathroom outlets?
Do you have arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) installed in your bedrooms?
Are your GFCIs and AFCIs tested at least once a month?
If you have small children, are your outlets child-proofed?
Are all electronic/appliance cords intact?
No frayed casings.

No broken parts.

Do all your plugs fit firmly into the outlets?


Are all cords above the carpets in your home?

Are all cords completely unwrapped when in use?


Tip: Wrapped cords can trap heat, which weakens the insulation.

Are all outlets used with the appropriate electrical load?


Tip: Outlets are specifically designed to handle only so much electrical output. Overloading them
with multi-outlet adapters and several electrical objects can lead to a surge.

Do you use surge protectors as recommended by the manufacturer?


Do you use extension cords only on an as-needed basis?
Tip: Extension cords should never be used permanently. If you do use extension cords 24/7, you need to
have new outlets installed.

Lighting

Are all light bulbs the right wattage for each fixture?
Are all standing lamps placed on flat, level surfaces?
Are all lamps/light fixtures kept at least 30 centimetres from
anything flammable?
Are your lights operating as follows:
No dimming.

No flickering.

Has your electrical panel been inspected in the last 3 years?


Is the cover of your electrical panel cool to the touch?
Do you rarely (if ever) experience a tripped circuit?
Do you have whole-home surge suppression?

Are your unused appliances unplugged?


Are all your appliances in proper working condition?
Are all major appliances (fridge, stove, etc.) plugged directly into the wall?

Do you have at least one multi-purpose fire extinguisher?


Are all your smoke detectors/carbon monoxide alarms working?
Are all flammable materials kept away from electrical appliances/lights?
Is everyone in your family familiar with your emergency plan should a fire occur?

Are all outdoor electrical outlets free of debris, blockages, and properly
protected with a weatherproof safety cover?
Are cords approved for outdoor use?
Is any electrical equipment used around water (swimming pool, hot tub, etc.)
properly protected and plugged into a GFCI?
