2. Read the question carefully and then answer it according to the requirements of the
questions.

4. Your own analysis and synthesis will be appreciated.

of allied material.

ASSIGNMENT No. 1
(Units 1–5)
Q.1 Listen to a conversation or interview in your native language where
someone expresses their likes and dislikes. Provide a summary of the
expressions used, highlighting at least five instances of likes and five
instances of dislikes. Additionally, analyze the intensity of the
expressions, whether they are mild or strong. Reflect on how cultural and
contextual factors influence the way likes and dislikes are expressed in
your language Read Unit 1, Section A for guidance. (10)
Q.2 Study Section B of Unit 1 and respond. Why is it important to understand the
purpose of the writer when reading about traffic signs? How can various clues,
such as titles, headings, and words in bold, help readers discern the writer's
intentions in a book about traffic signs? Why might the information about traffic
signs be crucial, and for whom it could be particularly relevant? (15)
Q.3 Study Unit 2 of the book. Practice using expressions for making plans and
stating intentions by creating a dialogue between two friends discussing their

Q.4 Summarize the techniques for effective notetaking, including omitting
non- essential sentences and concentrating on important sentences and

Naveed on changing a car tire, discuss the importance of clear and concise
instructions in various aspects of life. Examples of daily activities include

Q.6 Write a letter to your friend who recently moved to another city. Write an
informal letter to him, updating him on your life and asking about theirs.
Include details about your studies and any upcoming plans and express
your desire to meet or catch up soon. Use the guidelines provided in the
content, including the format of the letter, addressing, greetings, and
closing remarks. Additionally, make sure to incorporate an excuse for any
delay in writing and express warmth and friendliness throughout the letter.

Q.9 Imagine you are organizing a small get-together and want to invite your
friend. Write a short invitation using appropriate expressions from the
dialogues you have listened to. Additionally, provide a sample response

approval and disapproval in the following situations? Write a sentence to show
approval or disapproval as well as draw any nonverbal sign such as smile, face

THE LION AND THE MOUSE:
A LION ASLEEP IN HIS LAIR WAS WAKENED BY A MOUSE RUNNING
OVER HIS FACE. LOSING HIS TEMPER HE SEIZED IT WITH HIS PAW AND
WAS ABOUT TO KILL IT. THE MOUSE, TERRIFIED, PITEOUSLY BEGGED
HIM TO SPARE HIS LIFE. "LET ME GO AND ONE DAY I WILL REPAY YOU
FOR YOUR KINDNESS", THIS AMUSED THE LION TO THINK A SMALL
CREATURE LIKE THIS COULD HELP HIM. ONE DAY THE LION GOT
ENTANGLED IN A NET WHICH HAD BEEN SPREAD FOR GAME BY THE
HUNTERS, AND THE MOUSE RECOGNISED HIS ROAR OF ANGER AND
RAN TO THE SPOT. HE BEGAN TO GNAW THE ROPES WITH HIS TEETH,
AND SUCCEEDED IN SETTING THE LION FREE. "THERE" SAID THE
MOUSE, "YOU LAUGHED AT ME WHEN I PROMISED TO REPAY YOU: BUT
NOW YOU SEE, EVEN A MOUSE CAN HELP A LION".
1. What caused the lion to wake up from his sleep?
2. Why did the lion laugh at the mouse?
3. "He began to gnaw the ropes with his teeth." What does the word
gnawed mean in this sentence?
