2023 DEVELOPMENTS
Continued Home Cooking Trend Boosts Demand For Other Dairy
Products
The home cooking trend continued as a key driver for growth for other dairy in 2023, despite
an increase in consumer mobility, as many workers returned to their pre-COVID-19 routines.
This tendency took off during the pandemic, when facing extended periods of isolation, Filipinos
showed a greater interest in baking traditional snacks and treats at home. This continued focus
on home-preparation allowed products such as cream, evaporated milk and condensed milk to
expand in retail volume terms in 2023, despite inflationary pressures.
Growth in other dairy was also boosted by the marketing efforts of key players, such as Nestlé
Philippines, who used social media to encourage home cooks to extend the use of products
such as Nestlé Cream beyond dessert making and into savoury preparations. At the same time,
the leader of evaporated and condensed milk, Alaska Milk Corp, elevated its marketing and
distribution efforts by forging partnerships with modern and traditional retailers.
Despite these factors, the rate of retail volume growth seen in other dairy remained relatively
modest in 2023, due to the maturity of demand in the subcategories of condensed milk and
evaporated milk. In coffee whiteners meanwhile, sales were limited largely to middle- and high-
income households who were most likely to purchase coffee on-trade, and who were seeking to
replicate the coffee shop experience at home. Moreover, coffee whiteners continued to face
indirect competition from 3-in-1 instant coffee mixes, with the latter being seen as more
convenient and affordable. Together, these factors served to dampen the rate of volume growth
for coffee whiteners in 2023.
Robust Growth In Foodservice
In 2023, other dairy saw a dynamic performance within foodservice, as consumers’ increasing
mobility saw them returning to bars, cafés and restaurants. Growth in foodservice was also
supported by the efforts of the leading players to enhance the visibility of their products. Alaska
Milk Corp, for example, supported pastry chefs from the Academy of Pastry and Culinary Arts
Philippines who competed in Grand Finals of Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie. The event was
promoted on the company’s Facebook page, using the hashtag #AlagangAlaska. At the same
time, Nestlé Professional remained dedicated to meeting the needs of chefs and foodservice
operators. The efforts made by the leading players to work with businesses within foodservice
demonstrate that there still much scope for growth within this channel.

Alaska Milk Corp Maintains Its Leading Position
Alaska Milk Corp maintained its position as the leading player in other dairy in 2023, largely
due to its dominant position in condensed and evaporated milk. The consumer base for Alaska’s
milk products is not limited to private households, as the company’s plain condensed milk is also
widely available in specialist coffee and tea shops independent cafés.
While the COVID-19 situation forced many independent foodservice businesses to close their
doors, to the disadvantage of Alaska Milk Corp, this trend was somewhat tempered by a rising
demand for the company’s condensed milk among the country’s numerous new small-scale
semi-formal foodservice businesses, most of which were started by individuals who had lost
their jobs in the formal foodservice trade. Moreover, Alaska Milk Corp was able to compensate
for losses that mounted during the pandemic by capitalising on the increased interest in home
baking and the preparation of meals at home. As Alaska condensed milk is most often used in
the preparation of desserts, the brand looked to diversify its product range towards the end of
the review period, with the addition of two new products - Alaska Creamy Chicken evaporated
milk and Alaska Creamy Beef evaporated milk - which were intended to be used in the
preparation of meat-based dishes.
Nestlé Philippines Inc. was Alaska Milk Corp’s strongest competitor in other dairy in 2023.
The company owes the bulk of its strength to its eponymous Nestlé and Carnation brands, the
latter of which (along with Milkmaid) was purchased from Alaska Milk Corp in 2021. Carnation
evaporated milk is packed in a carton with a resealable closure and was the first brand in the
country to use this kind of packaging.
PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Home Cooking Will Be Key Factor In Sustaining Growth But Some
Product Areas Will Remain Underdeveloped
Other dairy is expected to see a steady rate of growth in retail volume terms over the forecast
period. Products such as cream, evaporated milk and plain condensed milk are widely used
ingredients in home cooking and baking and are therefore set to benefit from the continuing
home preparation trend. By contrast, sales of flavoured condensed milk are currently negligible
in the Philippines, with the range of available options being extremely limited. With the leading
company in other dairy, Alaska Milk Corp, appearing to be interested in diversifying its portfolio,
as seen by the recent launches of Alaska Creamy Chicken and Alaska Creamy Beef evaporated
milk, it can be expected that the prominence of flavoured condensed milk will continue to
increase over the forecast period.
By contrast, there will be limited prospects for chilled and shelf-stable desserts, despite an
expected rise in disposable incomes. This is due to the enduring popularity of established
substitutes, such as flavoured yoghurt and ice cream, both of which benefit from strong
distribution. The lack of interest from consumers in chilled and shelf-stable desserts will
therefore discourage the leading players from moving into these product areas.
Continued Recovery For Foodservice
In keeping with the gradual recovery of the domestic economy and a commensurate rise in
disposable incomes, foodservice will be a source of growth within other dairy, going forward.
Here, the leading players will not only seek to improve the availability of their brands but will also
offer support to these establishments. The business of forging partnerships, rather than a strict
supplier-customer approach, has the potential to thrive in the competitive landscape of other

dairy, given that the key players are offering very similar products, in cream as well as
evaporated and condensed milk.
Another important factor that is expected to contribute to category growth during the forecast
period is the enhanced demand for other dairy products among the many small-scale
foodservice entrepreneurs that have emerged in the Philippines since the closure of numerous
businesses at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. With many of these businesses focusing
mainly on the preparation of desserts and traditional dishes, condensed milk is expected to
benefit, due to it being a key ingredient in many of these culinary creations.
Plant-based Alternatives Pose Threat To Dairy-based Condensed Milk
And Coffee Whiteners
The growing appreciation of plant-based alternatives among the Philippine population makes
it increasingly likely that the leading players in condensed milk will look to non-dairy alternatives
during the forecast period, in a bid to expand their customer base. This will be one way in which
they can potentially overcome the challenges presented by the high levels of maturity that exist
in condensed milk in country, due to the ubiquity of plain condensed milk in local cuisine. While
coconut cream is available in the Philippines, there is still much scope to develop offerings
which can attract the attention of affluent, health-conscious urban-dwellers in particular.
It is also possible that coffee whiteners will face indirect competition from plant-based milk as
some brands have a “barista” edition, thereby positioning it for use in beverages such as coffee.
Plant-based milk is more attuned with the healthy living trend than traditional coffee whiteners,
many of which contain added oils or sugars and other low-quality ingredients. Barista variants
are likely to be particularly appealing to coffee aficionados and/or affluent individuals, who wish
to recreate the coffee shop experience at home. Currently, there is very limited product
innovation in coffee whiteners and manufacturers will therefore need to up their game to thwart
competition from indirect substitutes, such as plant-based milk.
