• Procedure text
Procedure text is a text that explains or helps us how to make or use something. Its social
function is to describe how something is completely done through a sequence of steps.
Communicative purpose of this text is to describe how something is made through a
sequence of actions or steps.

There are three generic structures in procedure text. The first is goals or purposes. The
second is materials or tools. The third and the last are steps or methods. To know the text
that we read is procedure or not is so simple. You can read the title of it. If the title is started
with ‘how to make...’ or ‘how to use...’ it can be certainly defined that the text is procedure
text.

• Definition of Procedure text


There are three definition about procedure text
➢ Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction /operation
manuals
➢ Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity
➢ Texts that deal with human behaviour

• Generic Structure of Procedure Text


➢ Goal: (e.g.: How to make nasi goreng)
➢ Material or Ingredient: (e.g.: the material to cook nasi goreng are rice, egg, etc.)
➢ Step: (e.g.: first, prep the pan,..... second put oil to the pan ....)

• Purpose of Procedure Text


➢ To explain or tell how to make / operate / do something through a sequence of
actions or steps.
➢ To explain steps/instruction to make / operate / do something

• Language Feature of Procedure Text


➢ Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g.: first, second, the last)
➢ Use command/imperative sentence (e.g. : put the rice on the...., cut the vegetable...)
➢ Using adverbials to express detail the time, place, manner accurate (e.g.: for 10
minutes, 2 hours, etc.)
➢ Using action verbs, (e.g.: make, take, boil, cook)
➢ Using Simple Present Tense
Example of procedure text :

HOW TO MAKE STUFFED PLAIN BREAD

Ingredients
• Plain bread
• Cheese
• 250ml of milk
• One sachet of powder milk
• One sachet of condense milk
• 30ml of coconut milk
• 1-2 table spoon of sugar
• Flour
• Water
Tools
• Sauce pan
• Soup spoon
• Spoon
• Bowl
• Grater
• Container
Steps
1. Into the pan, pour 250ml of milk, one sachet powder milk, one sachet condense milk, 30ml
coconut milk and 1-2tsb sugar, and stir well.

2. In another bowl, dissolve flour with water

3. Cook the milk mixture on a medium-low heat until it boils while continue to stir

4. Pour the flour mixture little by little into the milk mixture
5. Cook until it gets thick, turn of the stove and let it cool down

6. Put one loaf of bread in container

7. Pour the milk mixture on top of the bread and spread it evenly

8. Grate a good amount of cheese on top of the bread

9. Repeat until all the bread and milk mixture run out
10. Stuffed plain bread are ready. It will be more delicious if you put it in the freezer for couple
hour and eat when it cold.
