Homework: Chapter 1

1.1 Explain advantages of Fiber Optic Communications including Enormous Bandwidth,

Low transmission loss, Immunity to cross talk, Electrical Isolation, Signal security,
Flexibility, Low cost and availability (compared to copper cable), Reliability.

1.2 Compare advantages-disadvantages of Fiber Optic Communication System (FOCS),

Microwave Communication System (MCS) and Satellite Communication System (SCS)
by filling out the words: Lowest (L), Medium (M), Highest (H) or “Can not to compare”
(CN) in boxes below (the words in System Cost boxes are considered examples)
Bit rate or Communication Product Mobile Wave System
Capacity Length (BL) ability coverage Cost
(B) (Distance
without
Repeater) (L)
FOCS ? ? ? ? ? Medium
(M)
MCS ? ? ? ? ? Lowest
(L)
SCS ? ? ? ? ? Highest
(H)

Explain why you choose these words?

1.3 Present the characteristics of each generation of fiber optic communication systems.
Indicate future development trends.
1.4 Draw a block diagram of a fiber optic communication system that transfers digital
signals and briefly explain the function of each block.
1.5 What is the function of the “Drive circuit” in the block diagram of the fiber optic
communication system in the figure below?

1.6 Explain why the capacity of fiber optic communication systems is about 10,000 times
larger than that of microwave systems.
1.7 List three windows (in wavelength unit) that are used in FOCS (from the past to the
present) and show characteristics of the signal transferred through the fiber corresponding
to each window.
1.8 Calculate the carrier frequency for optical communication systems operating at the
wavelength of 800 nm; 1300 nm; 1550 nm. What is the photon energy (in eV) in each case?
1.9 Calculate the transmission distance so that the optical power is reduced 10 times in 3
kinds of fibers with loss per km as follows: 0.2 dB/km; 20 dB/km; 2000 dB/km. Assuming
the optical power declines exponentially exp(-aL) along the fiber length, calculate
parameter a (unit 1/cm) for the above 3 types of fibers.
1.10 We suppose a digital information system that can operate at the bit rate equal to 10%
of the carrier frequency. Calculate the number of voice channels with the bit rate of 64 Kb/s
transmitted with the microwave carrier of 5 GHz frequency and with the optical carrier of
1550 nm wavelength.
1.11 Low loss for optical fibers is an important goal to be achieved in research and
application and contributes to accelerating the development of the system.
a. If 90% of the transmit power remains after each kilometer of fiber, calculate the
maximum transmission distance such that the percentage of remaining power is greater
than 0.1%.
b. If this remaining percentage changes to 95%, find the maximum transmission distance
in this case under the same conditions as above. From there, we can see the meaning of the
effect of fiber loss on communication distance.
