EXPLAIN

Family – A group of people bound by that complex set of relationships known as kinship ties; Basic unit
within the society which ensures continued existence of society-procreation of new generation.
*Basic Family Structure
1. Nuclear Family produces or adopts them and sanction the sexual union of a male and a female by law
or tradition—in our society, by legal marriage. The institution of marriage, then, serves not only to
legalize a sexual union but also to fix the obligation toward children who result from that sexual union.
2. Extended family pattern consists of relatives of the nuclear family who are economically and
emotionally dependent on each other. Extended family relatives of the nuclear family who are
economically and emotionally dependent on each other.
3. Matriarchal family - In which the mother has formal authority and dominance
4. Patriarchal family - In which the father has formal authority and dominance
5. Egalitarian family - In which both sides of the extended family are regarded as equal
6. Binuclear family - Pattern in which children are part of two homes and two family groups
*BASIC FAMILY FUNCTIONS
What do families do? The family performs certain basic functions, generation after generation, enabling it
to survive and adapt. The following basic functions may vary by culture and may be impacted by
economic, health, or social stresses.
a. Reproduction. The family ensures that the society’s population will be maintained; that is, a sufficient
number of children will be born and cared for to replace the members who die.
b. Socialization/education. The family ensures that the society’s values, beliefs, attitudes, knowledge,
skills, and techniques will be transmitted to the young.
c. Assignment of social roles. The family provides an identity for its offspring (racial, ethnic, religious,
socioeconomic, and gender roles). An identity involves behavior and obligations. For example, a Jewish
person may not eat pork and may feel obliged to give to charity. A Chinese person may eat with
chopsticks and defer to the authority of his or her elders. A person born into a high socioeconomic status
may be pressured to choose a spouse from a similar family background. In some families, girls are
socialized to do housework and be caregivers and boys to be breadwinners.
d. Economic support. The family provides shelter, nourishment, and protection. In some families, all
members except very young children contribute to the economic function by producing goods. In other
families, one or both parents earn the money that pays for goods the entire family consumes.
e. Nurturance/emotional support. The family provides the child’s first experience in social interaction.
This interaction is intimate, nurturing, and enduring, thus providing emotional security for the child. The
family cares for its members when they are ill, hurt, or aging.
