Abstract
This research study explores the enduring influence of Jose Rizal's values on the Filipino
people. Rizal, recognized as the national hero of the Philippines, espoused values such as love
for country, commitment to education, integrity, respect for human dignity and equality, and
the pursuit of excellence. The aim of this research is to assess the extent to which Filipinos

Tracy B. Ravin, MD, writes an article about the study of Rizal in ophthalmology entitled
“Philippine National Hero and Ophthalmologist”. A true martyr, Rizal spoke out for injustice
when others were complacent. His ideas helped formulate a national identity for the
Philippines, which was a new concept in Asia, then under colonial rule. He defended his beliefs
to his death. His country suffered a tremendous loss with the death of this intellectual giant,
who would likely have played an important part in establishing independence and recognition
for the Philippines. The world lost an exemplary citizen, a multitalented man with a brilliant
mind. He accomplished so much in his brief 35 years; one can only imagine what contributions
he would have made to the world and to the field of ophthalmology if he had lived a full life
span. To his patients he gave sight, and to his country he gave vision.
Diana Ross Medrina Cetenta and Mr. Michael Angelo Doblado, History and Rizal subject
teacher of Palawan State University (PSU)-Main, shares their written article called “Rizal is
still relevant in a modern society”. Rizal exposed the wrongdoings of the Spaniards through his
literary pieces that depicted the hardships of Filipinos under the Spanish regime. According to
him, Rizal is still relevant even in modern society because the social ills that he condemned
more than a hundred years ago are still prevalent in the Philippines today. The only difference
and the sad truth is that the new inflictors are also Filipinos. He added that Filipino people do
not yet realize and practice the essence and the real message of Rizal’s writings.

2.4 Abstract
Filipinos would agree on the fact that Jose Rizal had exemplified remarkable efforts for the
motherland, Philippines. The object of such hard work did not only limit among the people of
his time, for we still are experiencing and “enjoying” the fruits of such at present. He did make
a great legacy and great contributions to the Filipinos—i.e., national consciousness, unity, value
of education—through his eye-opening and soul-captivating works, for example. He initiated
some movements for the Filipinos to acquire freedom, independence, equality and democracy.
His values and principles which developed over time towards the realization of freedom and
common good had imparted a significant and lasting impact on the Filipinos. The Rizal Law
and Rizal Day are established to awaken and recuperate the sense of nationalism and patriotism
among the Filipinos, especially the youth.
These two were made as both an avenue for the youth to learn the ideals and teachings of Rizal
during the Spanish era which, surprisingly, are still and especially relevant up to the modern
times. Through these, the youth may be transformed into productive citizens of the country. In
pushing for independence, Rizal was not just after the expulsion of the Spaniards from this
country. More importantly, he was advocating for the need to value hard work, education and
the civic virtues. Such is the brilliance of Rizal that these things that he was advocating for can
still be very much applied until today. However, this is contrary to what is happening to our
youth today. The youth forgot and take for granted what Rizal did for our country to fire up
Filipino’s zeal for independence. Also, we celebrate Rizal Day every 30 th of December to
reenkindle Rizal’s death anniversary.
Rizal Day was declared a national non-working holiday for the Filipinos to commemorate the
martyrdom and nationalism of Rizal. Such practice was first instituted through the decree
issued by President Emilio Aguinaldo. This then makes the celebration of Rizal Day official
since December 30, 1898.
