and content analysis of Rizal's writings and speeches. Quantitative methods involve surveys
administered to a representative sample of Filipinos across different regions, age groups, and
socio-economic backgrounds.
The study investigates Filipinos' perception and awareness of Rizal's values, examining their
understanding and familiarity with these principles. It explores how Rizal's values manifest in
the behavior and actions of Filipinos, assessing their demonstration of patriotism, integrity,
respect for human dignity, and pursuit of excellence. The research also examines the influence
of Rizal's values on Filipino cultural and social norms, considering the extent to which these
values have become embedded in societal practices and traditions. Furthermore, the research

Namely, Eufemio Agbayani of the NHCP, Agbayani explained that “in Rizal’s case, many of
these innovations that Rizal had introduced were the things that he encountered and
experienced while he was in Europe and other countries, and used it to benefit the lives of the
people in Dapitan.” Program Boondock, a Baguio-based engineering center, which developed
cable carts that transport upland vegetables down to the trading post in the far-flung
communities of Northern Luzon. The DOST has its current community-based innovations such
as the Ceramic Water Filtration system, a low-cost table-top water filtration system developed
using nano-particles and are suitable during natural disasters and off-the-grid living. Another
one is the Rainwater Collection system, a contraption of easy-to-assemble rainwater collection
system made from durable materials that can easily fit into downspouts to collect and store

Tracy B. Ravin, MD, writes an article about the study of Rizal in ophthalmology entitled
“Philippine National Hero and Ophthalmologist”. A true martyr, Rizal spoke out for injustice
when others were complacent. His ideas helped formulate a national identity for the
Philippines, which was a new concept in Asia, then under colonial rule. He defended his beliefs
to his death. His country suffered a tremendous loss with the death of this intellectual giant,
who would likely have played an important part in establishing independence and recognition
for the Philippines. The world lost an exemplary citizen, a multitalented man with a brilliant
mind. He accomplished so much in his brief 35 years; one can only imagine what contributions
he would have made to the world and to the field of ophthalmology if he had lived a full life
span. To his patients he gave sight, and to his country he gave vision.
Diana Ross Medrina Cetenta and Mr. Michael Angelo Doblado, History and Rizal subject
teacher of Palawan State University (PSU)-Main, shares their written article called “Rizal is
still relevant in a modern society”. Rizal exposed the wrongdoings of the Spaniards through his
literary pieces that depicted the hardships of Filipinos under the Spanish regime. According to
him, Rizal is still relevant even in modern society because the social ills that he condemned
more than a hundred years ago are still prevalent in the Philippines today. The only difference
and the sad truth is that the new inflictors are also Filipinos. He added that Filipino people do
not yet realize and practice the essence and the real message of Rizal’s writings.

Jose Rizal is a beloved Filipino national hero and author of two of the most influential novels in Philippine
history, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. He is credited with inspiring the Philippine Revolution
of 1896 and is a symbol of Filipino pride, patriotism, and nationalism. This thesis will explore the life and
works of Jose Rizal and the impact they have had on the Filipino people. To do this, the thesis will look
at Rizal’s upbringing, his education, his works, his exile and eventual execution, and the legacy he left
behind.

Rizal was born in 1861 in Calamba, Laguna, a small town in the Philippines. His parents were both of
Chinese-Filipino descent and were well-to-do landowners. Rizal received an excellent education,
attending the Ateneo Municipal de Manilla for college and studying medicine in Spain. He was a prolific
writer, writing and publishing several novels, essays, and poems throughout his lifetime. His most famous
works were Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, which depicted Philippine society before and during
Spanish colonization, respectively. These works exposed the corruption and mistreatment of the Filipino
people by the Spanish government, and inspired a wave of patriotism and national pride amongst
Filipinos.

Rizal’s writings and activities were seen as a threat to the Spanish government, who eventually exiled him
in 1892. While in exile, Rizal wrote his autobiographical novel, Mi Ultimo Adios, which was filled with
his thoughts on the Philippine Revolution and his love for the Filipino people. Despite his exile, Rizal
continued to write and spread his message of freedom and independence. In 1896, he was arrested and
executed by firing squad for his alleged involvement in the revolution.

Rizal’s life and works left a lasting impact on the Filipino people. His writings inspired the Philippine
Revolution of 1896 and his death became a symbol of the struggle against Spanish colonization. His
works are still read today and his legacy continues to inspire Filipinos to fight for freedom and justice. His
example of courage and patriotism has become a source of pride for the Filipino people and a symbol of

2.4 Abstract
Filipinos would agree on the fact that Jose Rizal had exemplified remarkable efforts for the
motherland, Philippines. The object of such hard work did not only limit among the people of
his time, for we still are experiencing and “enjoying” the fruits of such at present. He did make
a great legacy and great contributions to the Filipinos—i.e., national consciousness, unity, value
of education—through his eye-opening and soul-captivating works, for example. He initiated
some movements for the Filipinos to acquire freedom, independence, equality and democracy.
His values and principles which developed over time towards the realization of freedom and
common good had imparted a significant and lasting impact on the Filipinos. The Rizal Law
and Rizal Day are established to awaken and recuperate the sense of nationalism and patriotism
among the Filipinos, especially the youth.
These two were made as both an avenue for the youth to learn the ideals and teachings of Rizal
during the Spanish era which, surprisingly, are still and especially relevant up to the modern
times. Through these, the youth may be transformed into productive citizens of the country. In
pushing for independence, Rizal was not just after the expulsion of the Spaniards from this
country. More importantly, he was advocating for the need to value hard work, education and
the civic virtues. Such is the brilliance of Rizal that these things that he was advocating for can
still be very much applied until today. However, this is contrary to what is happening to our
youth today. The youth forgot and take for granted what Rizal did for our country to fire up
Filipino’s zeal for independence. Also, we celebrate Rizal Day every 30 th of December to
reenkindle Rizal’s death anniversary.
Rizal Day was declared a national non-working holiday for the Filipinos to commemorate the
martyrdom and nationalism of Rizal. Such practice was first instituted through the decree
issued by President Emilio Aguinaldo. This then makes the celebration of Rizal Day official
since December 30, 1898.
