discovered. People(32)......live...........in the Sahara Desert have (33)..found....fish swimming in

3.1) Despite the fact that too much fat can be harmful, a moderate fat intake is actually essential
to the maintenance of good health. Some of the symptoms of fat deficiency include "flaking skin"
emaciation, reduced functioning of the immune system, and fertility problems. Recent studies
have linked fat-free diets to increase stress and aggression, and note that those who try to
eliminate fat completely from their food intake may be at risk for developing eating disorders: a
small amount of fat in a meal will produce a feeling of satiety which lasts much longer than the
sensation of fullness produced by protein or carbohydrates. At least two teaspoons of fat per day
is needed in order for the digestive system to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K, which are fat
soluble. These vitamins are essential for healthy hair, skin, teeth and eyes. Without the ability to
absorb vitamins, children run the risk of development and neurological disorders. Adults need
these vitamins to manufacture fertility hormones. Some types of fat actually help to reduce
harmful cholesterol levels. Polyunsaturated fats such as corn, soybean and sesame oil, and
monounsaturated fats like chicken fat, olive fat, seem to lower blood cholesterol, while
saturated fats-those who found in red meat, dairy products and tropical oils-seem to raise the
level of the kind of cholesterol which accumulates as plague on arterial walls. Paying attention
to the type of fat consumed is just as important as reducing total fat intake.

3.3) With increasing development and use of computer technology, there is a new disease to
worry about. Computer “viruses”, programs designed to sabotage computers, are infecting
computers in corporations, homes, and universities. These viruses spread exponentially, much
like biological contagion, and then disrupt the affected systems. The virus secretly attaches itself
to other programs and can then delete or alter files. The damage is generally activated by using
computer’s clock. Then, any, program that is executed may be exposed to the virus, including
programs spread through telephone connections. Because of the increasing incident of virus
infiltration, business and agencies are becoming wary of sharing software. Security policies
need to be increased as immunity programs. Another problem relating to computers is
computer crime. The increased use of computers in business has been accompanied by a
corresponding increase in computer crime. Computers are used in business, in ever-increasing
numbers to store, process and distribute information. At the same time, thefts by computer are
on the rise. The costs to the victims of computer crime are very high. In his book, Crime by
computer, computer expert Donn B. parker estimated that financial losses to business from
computer thefts exceeded $10 billion in 1978. Although Parker’s estimate is based on
documented cases, no one really knows the extent of computer crime because thefts by
computers are almost impossible to discover. Parker stated that there was no reliable way to
detect computer thefts. It was not just the money they controlled; they controlled data, and data
was power.

3.5) There are many causes of headaches, and most people suffer them at some time or other.
Although doctors have come a long way from the old days, when headaches were ascribed to
evil spirits and treatments ranged from cutting our part of the skull to concoctions of cow brain
and goat dung, they are still not sure what sets off headaches.
The most significant advance has been the acceptance that they are not the result of emotional
stress. Until recently, many doctors thought that imbalances in the body’s systems were to
blame, but experts now believe it is the brain itself. They point to malfunctioning chemicals,
such as serotonin, whose job it is to send messages to regulate the contraction and dilation of
blood vessels in the brain.
Monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer used in Chinese cooking, can cause headaches in
some people, as do many other common foods. Red wine, aged cheese, coffee, chocolate, nuts,
and preserved meats contain nitrates, caffeine, and tyramine, chemicals that may produce
pounding headaches.
Even though the exact culprit has yet to be found, there are plenty of treatments for prevention
or cure. Over-the-counter preparations such as aspirin are fine for treating the occasional
headache, but often exacerbate severe cases. Beta blockers, usually used for lowering blood
pressure, seem to head off migraines. Antidepressants are effective, too. But doctors also
recommend non-drug treatments such as relaxation techniques, which can be used in
combination with medication, and diet modification, to cut out foods that cause attacks.

3.7) Telecommuting is some form of computer communication between employees’ homes and
offices. For employees whose job involve sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data
or typing reports, the location of the computer is of no consequence. If the machine can
communicate over telephone lines, when the work is completed, employees can dial the office
computer and transmit the material to their employers. A recent survey in USA Today estimates
that there are approximately 8,7 million telecommuters. But although the numbers are rising
annually, the trend does not appear to be as significant as predicted when Business Week
published “The Portable Executive” as its cover story a few years ago. Why hasn’t
telecommuting become more popular?Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there
has been active resistance on the part of many managers. These executives claim that
supervising the telecommuters in a large work force scattered across the country would be too
difficult, or, at least, systems for managing them are not yet developed, thereby complicating the
manager’s responsibilities. It is also true that employees who are given the option of
telecommuting are reluctant to accept the opportunity. Most people feel that they need regular
interaction with a group, and many are concerned that they will not have the same
consideration for advancement if they are not more visible in the office setting. Some people feel
that even when a space in their homes is set aside as a work area, they never really get away
from the office.

.3.10) Do you intend to study at American University? It takes a long time to get accepted at
most American schools, perhaps as much as a year. That's why you should start choosing a
school as soon as possible. It's also a good idea to apply to several different institutions, so that
you'll have a better chance of acceptance at one. You should start looking for information now,
because the more information you have about each college, the better choice you can make.

There are two good ways to get information you need. One is a general reference book,
called Guide to American Colleges and Universities. The other good source of information is the
catalogue published by each school.
You can study the general guide in almost any American library. This book has many
useful statistics, such as the number of students, the average test scores for people accepted to
the school, the number of books in the library, and the number of faculty members. You can also
find the address of each school in this book.
Although the general guidebook has helpful information, some of the facts may be out-
of-date. For instance, many schools raise their tuition every year. Since you'll need to know
what your education will cost, out-of-date information will not be good enough. Also, schools
sometimes change their requirements for entrance. To be sure that you are getting current
information, write to the university and ask for it catalogue.
The catalogue not only has more detailed information. For instance, the catalogue can tell you if
there is a special foreign student advisor, what kind of courses are offered, and what kind of
housing is available. Some universities have dormitories, but at others you have to find your
own place to live.
With all of this information, you should be able to pick out several good schools.
