Counting Figure

Type 1: COUNTING FIGURES

In this type of question, we have a shape or figure of a geometric. From the given shape you haveto identify a
given known shape and count the number of times it is present in the given shape.

Short trick:
Illustrative examples:-

Questions based on counting figures:

1. Find number of triangles.

a) 45

b) 50

c) 60

d) 48

Correct answer: c

Solution:

 Using the vertical line AD, AE and AF,

Number of triangles = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10

 Using horizontal lines BC, PQ, MN, ST and HG,

 Total no. of triangles = 10 * total number of horizontal lines = 10*5 = 50

2. Find number of triangles.

a) 12

b) 14

c) 13

d) 15

Correct answer: c

Solution:

Using smaller triangle PQR, there is total 4 triangles.

Then after using ABC, there is total 4 triangles

Then after using MNO, there is total 4 triangles

Total number of triangles = 12 + One larger triangle JKL = 13

3. Find number of triangles.

a) 11

b) 14

c) 13

d) 15

Correct answer: a

Solution:

We consider the large triangle as 1

Now after adding a triangle inside it, we will get other 4 more triangles.

Now we draw three lines on smaller triangle from the vertices of the larger triangle, we get other 6 triangles (2
triangles on each side of smaller triangle) as follows.

So,

Total no. of triangles = 4 + 1 + 6 = 11

4. Find number of squares.

a) 32

b) 30

c) 34

d) 26

Correct answer: b

Solution:

If figure is symmetric, means no. of rows is equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered boxes as 1, 2,
3, 4 as rows and columns as well,

Then total no. of squares = 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 + 4^2 = 30

5. Find number of squares.

a) 45 b) 60 c) 55 d) 50

Correct answer: d

Solution:

If figure is asymmetric, means no. of rows is not equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered boxes as
1, 2, 3, 4… as rows and columns. Then we find

product of the last column box to last row box, 6*4 = 24 and then implies this with one less value in rows and
columns as well.

6*4 = 24

5*3 = 15

4*2 = 08

3*1 = 03

We do this till we don’t get the either value of row or column as 1

Total no. of squares = 24 + 15 + 08 + 03 = 50

6. Find number of squares.

a) 15

b) 20

c) 25

d) 30

Correct answer: b

Solution:

If we draw a square with plus sign then we get total 5 squares. There are total 4 such squares. So, Total no. of
squares = 5*4 = 20

7. Find number of squares.

a) 20

b) 18

c) 17

d) 24

Correct answer: b

Solution:

For symmetric figure there is total 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 = 14 squares. Then, 4 squares are at the corners. So, total
no. of squares = 14 + 4 = 18

8. Find number of rectangles.

a) 100

b) 195

c) 225

d) 120

Correct answer: c

Solution:

If figure is symmetric, means no. of rows is equal to no. of columns.

If figure is asymmetric, means no. of rows is not equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered boxes as
1, 2, 3, 4… as rows and columns. Then we find

1^3 + 2^3 + 3^3 + 4^3 +…..

Here we have numbered boxes as 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

So total no. of rectangles = 1^3 + 2^3 + 3^3 + 4^3 + 5^3 = 225

9. Find number of rectangles.

a) 25

b) 80

c) 90

d) 95

Correct answer: c

Solution :

If figure is asymmetric, means no. of rows is not equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered boxes as
1, 2, 3 as rows and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, as columns.

Then we add row box numbers and column box numbers individually, then multiply the sum of those. After
adding row numbers we get, 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 and adding columns we get, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15

Then total no. of rectangles = 6*15 = 90

10. Find number of rectangles.

a) 17

b) 20

c) 18

d) 19

Correct answer: d

Solution:

We numbered this figure boxes as 1, 2, 3, and 4 considering common row as 1, then we simply add them we
get, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 from both the sides. And one rectangle counted twice so we subtract it. So total no. of
rectangles = 10 + 10 – 1 = 19.
