Problem Set in Pre-Cal

The document contains examples of identifying properties of circles, parabolas, and ellipses from their equations. It provides circle equations and asks to identify the center and radius. It then does the same for parabolas and ellipses, asking for foci, vertices, directrix, and standard forms.

CIRCLE

A. Identify the center and radius of the circle with the given equation in each item. Sketch its
graph, and indicate the center.

1. (x – 6)² + (y + 3/2)² = 36

Center (6, –3/2)

Radius = 6

2. x² + y² – 6x = 40

x² + y² – 6x = 40
x² – 6x + 9 + y² = 40 + 9
(x – 3)² + y² = 49

r² = 49
r=7

Center (3, 0)
Radius = 7
3. x² + y² + 10x – 7y = –11

x² + y² + 10x – 7y + 11 = 0
D = –2h
10 = –2h
–2
h = –5

E = –2k
–7 = –2k
–2
k = 7/2
Center (–5, 7/2)

F = h² + k² – r²
r² = (–5)² + (7/2)² -11
r² = 25 + 49/4 – 11
r² = 49/4 + 14
r² = 105/4
r = √105/4 or 26. 25

4. x² + y² – 14x – 8y = – 10
x² + y² –14x –8y + 10 = 0
D = –2h
–14 = –2h

h=7

E = –2k
8 = –2k
–2
k = –4
Center (7, –4)

F = h² + k² – r²
r² = (7)² + (–4)² -10
r² = 49 + 16 – 10
r² = 65 – 10
r² = 55
r = √55 or 7.416
5. x² + y² = 25
Center (0, 0)
r² = 25
r=5

6. x² + y² + 10x + 18y + 22 = 0

D = –2h
10 = –2h
–2
h = –5

E = –2k
18 = –2k
–2
k = –9

Center (–5, –9)

F = h² + k² – r²
r² = (-5)² + (-9)² – 22
r² = 25 + 81 – 22
r² = 106 – 22
r² = 84
r = √84 or 9.165
7. 2x² + 2y² + 12x + 16y + 24 = 0

2x² + 2y² + 12x + 16y + 24 = 0

Center (–3, –4)

F = h² + k² – r²
r² = (–3)² + (–4)² – 12
r² = 9 + 16 – 12
r² = 13
r = √13 or 3.605

8. 8x² + 8y² – 24x – 16y + 2 = 0

9. x² + y² + 4x – 14y + 18 = 0

10. 17x² + 17y² – 204x + 136y + 255 = 0
