JOB PROCEDURE FOR EARTH WORK
DOCUMENT NO.: PISL/QA-QC/AM/NS/HAZ/PJO/JP-04 Rev. No. 00 P a g e 4 of 7
5.0 METHODOLOGY
All terms used in this procedure shall have same meaning as defined in the bidding
document, AM/NS specification and referred IS codes.
The sequential activities and corresponding method statements are as follows:
Machineries:
Following equipment proposed to be used for excavation works:-
Excavator, Dozer, Loader, Dumper, hand tool and machinery shall have requisite documents
as required as per project norms.
Leveling & Grading:
The spot levels of the site shall be taken and recorded for future reference. Leveling and grad-
ing as required shall be carried out before starting of specific excavation jobs and substructure
work. Where filling or cutting is required shall be cleared and stripped off bushes, roots, vege-
tation, trees cutting and organic materials. The virgin soil is exposed after removing trees of
girth up to 30cms below existing ground level and holes/depressions shall be filled up with se-
lected approved available soil, compacted to obtain 90%/ or specified in contract, of max lab -
oratory dry density of soil and leveled as directed by AM/NS. Material obtained from site clear-
ing shall be stacked or disposed off within a lead as decided by AM/NS INDIA.
Excavation:
Depending on higher depth of excavation and loose/unstable sub-soil conditions, suitable
shoring / strutting and sloping shall be done on the sides as per site requirement to protect
from any collapse of sides and this shall be done as per sketches / instructions by the engi -
neer wherever necessary.
Care shall be taken to identify and check all underground services / utilities in the area which
may foul during excavation. So, protective measures shall be taken by properly supporting
and diverting before proceeding with further excavation.
Any excavation made in excess of the depth required, shall be filled up to the required level
with sand filling or lean concrete of mixing ratio [Link] or as decided by AM/NS INDIA.
Whenever sub-soil water is encountered during excavation, necessary dewatering arrange-
ments shall be made by well points or by pumping the same, making a suitable sump in the
corner of the excavate area for disposal of water.

JOB PROCEDURE FOR EARTH WORK
DOCUMENT NO.: PISL/QA-QC/AM/NS/HAZ/PJO/JP-04 Rev. No. 00 P a g e 5 of 7
Approaches for labour - workmen shall be provided during excavation. Correct bottom levels
of the excavation shall be checked as per drawings/ specification
Excavated material shall not be deposited within 1.5 meter from top edge of excavation or
within a distance equal to depth of excavation whichever is higher.
Excavation for foundations/pipes/cables etc.:
All excavations shall be done to the dimensions necessary to Carry out the work safely. Exca-
vations shall be properly planned and shall be in line with contract/drawings satisfying the re -
quirements of safety.
Excavation done by machineries like Proclain/JCB excavator/rock breaker shall be carried out
to depths of 150 mm above the final level. The balance shall be excavated with special care to
get required level and shape. Foundation pits/trenches shall not be excavated to the full depth
unless construction is imminent. The last 15cm depth of the excavation shall not be done until
concreting work is imminent.
Soft pockets shall be removed even below the final level and shall be back filled with specified
materials as decided by AM/NS INDIA.
Suitable berms shall be left at the appropriate places with necessary approach ramps for in -
stallation of dewatering pumps or other purpose, as required.
The berms shall be excavated later and the excavation finished to the lines and grades shown
on the drawings. The final level shall be offered for AM/NS verification and record shall be
submitted.
Backfilling:
Soil having plasticity index less than 20 and laboratory max. dry density more than 1.5 gm/cc
only shall be used for filling. All the soft patches encountered at the desired level of excava-
tion, shall be removed completely and filled back with approved soil and duly rammed and
compacted with water to the required density of filling as specified.
The maximum thickness of each layer shall not exceed 20cm in loose conditions. Compaction
of earth and sand filling in areas where foundations and floors are located, the degree of com-
paction achieved shall be minimum 90% of maximum laboratory dry Density by standard proc-
tor compaction test as per IS: 2720 excavation or within a distance equal to depth of excava-
tion whichever is higher.
The filling, after it reaches the required level, shall be dressed and finished as specified to the
required alignment, levels, cross sections, dimensions and slopes as shown in the drawing or
as directed by the Engineer.

of pure sand filling, flooding with water is permissible. The surface of the consolidation
sand/moorum shall be dressed to required level or slope as shown in the drawings.
Care shall be taken during backfill operation to prevent damage to permanent works.
Disposal of Material:
