In the Philippines, English is a very important tool to face the globalization era. It
therefore follows that English represents the global link between students
And all forms of knowledge. With this in mind, the core English language skill which
students now need more than ever, is the ability to converse fluently. Conversation
skills rest on student comprehension of the language requirements of grammar and
composition vocabulary which enable the correct formulation of speech and on whether
students can ultimately master the ability to speak correctly (Mofareh et,. Al, 2019)
Speaking English is not easy, when speaking English students face many
problems. Desmayani et al. (2019) said that there are several problems in
speaking English namely, cultural, language problems, and communication
difficulties. Speaking is a skill that is a little difficult to master because it requires
knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Meanwhile, according to
Chen (2009) the difficulties that are often experienced by students are lack of self-
confidence, not fluent in speaking English and also do not memorize vocabulary.
In addition, Heriansyah (2012) said that speaking difficulties occur because of
little knowledge of vocabulary; don’t know how to use grammar, difficult in
pronunciation. So do not know to say. Dalem (2017) also stated the same thing that
students were afraid to make mistakes when speaking for fear of being laughed at,
feeling embarrassed and lacking confidence. Meanwhile, Inayah and Lisdawati
(2017) said that students understand English well but students still have difficulty
and do not feel comfortable when practicing speaking. With this, many students
understand English, but they still feel they can’t speak because they have
difficulties in speaking such as pronunciation problems, lack of vocabulary mastery,
and are also embarrassed to look wrong in front of their friends. That is what
underlies the students’ speaking performance does not increase
With that, the research aims to identify the difficulties encountered by Non-american
students in English communication
This chapter has elaborated various literatures from different research studies in
The paper by Tatsuya Amano et al. (2023) surveyed approximately 900 scientists –
mostly Early Career Researchers from Environmental Sciences – from around the
world and found that non-native English speakers were more likely to report feeling
excluded from the scientific community, less likely to be invited to speak at
conferences, and less likely to have their papers published in top journals. The study
also found that non-native English speakers were more likely to experience
discrimination in the workplace.
Moreover, Sokip (2020) further points out that language learning skills cannot be
separated from the aspects of education such as the role of teacher, role of teaching
materials and curriculum, the teaching method adopted by the teacher, teaching media,
and infrastructure of the institution. The role of a teacher in the classroom as a
facilitator may increase the learning proficiency of learners but he teacher is
authoritarian in the classroom then learners are just passive learners and do not get
opportunities for language practice (Sokip, 2020). Therefore, the presence of the
teacher and the way of teaching in the class play a crucial role in learning a language.
So, we can say that language learning is not affected by the individual’s learning factors
only; other factors cause learning difficulties.
Methodology
This research utilized a descriptive research design. Descriptive research involves
looking at the characteristics of a population. This can be done by doing observations,
case studies, and surveys. This research design will help the researchers identify the
challenges encountered by non-American students in English communication.
The study was conducted at Langkaan II National High School. The researchers were
given an allotted time to finish the preparation of the study, which started in April 2024.
In this research paper, the respondents will be the students enrolled in Langkaan II
National High School. The respondents will be given a survey questionnaire to
determine the challenges they encountered in English communication. The
respondents are randomly selected. All information shared by the respondents will be
kept confidential in accordance with RA No. 10173, or the Data Privacy Act.
Results
Question 1: What is the major problem that a student faced in english communication?
Question 2: What psychological factors hinder students from speaking in English
class?
Question 3: Are certain teachers and/or methods of teaching responsible for student
problems?
Discussion
The findings indicate that most Langkaan II National High School students had trouble
with grammatical mistakes when speaking English. The issues of inadequate
pronunciation and a deficiency in vocabulary come next. The results also show that fear
of making mistakes is one of the psychological barriers that most students at Langkaan
II National High School face. Most students at Langkaan II National High School are
likely to concur that specific teachers and/or teaching strategies are to blame for their
issues.
Moreover, the study concluded that learning from mistakes are one of the best way to
resolve the issue students faced in regard to English communication. In addition to that,
based on the result of the study enable individuals to express themselves clearly and
understand others are both effect of lear English language
Conclusion
Based on the findings, it can be concluded that students in Langkaan II National High
School find it so hard to communicate in English language because they are conscious
about their grammar and choices of words, this lead them to lack of confidence and fear
of making mistakes.
Furthermore the study concluded that teaching methods and teacher’s performance
had a great impact to students when it comes to English communication. In a country
that uses English as their second language it is important that teachers guide their
students how to communicate efficiently. The way they teach and their methods of
teaching can create a big impact that could help the students be more effective
speaker.
In addition, study concluded that learning from mistake also guide the student to be
better. As stated by (Mahmoud, 2019) “Experience is the best teacher”. Having a
mistake can be a good thing it can serve as students learning guide on how to improve
their grammar and how to communicate properly. Proficient English language skills
enable individuals to express themselves clearly, understand others, and engage in
meaningful conversations.
