Guide Questions
1. Why is it important for a hypothesis to be based on existing literature?
- It is important to base our hypothesis on existing literature to strengthen the
validity of the educated guess. Literature carries a significant role in solidifying
the researchers’ hypothesis by providing statistical results based on
experiments. Therefore, by collecting an ample amount of literature, the
researchers' thoughts will broaden—generating more logical, well-founded
guesses and theories.
2. Why must a hypothesis be empirically testable?
- A hypothesis must be empirically testable so the researchers have the ability
to prove its validity or falsity—through experimentation. Testable hypotheses
enable researchers to gather scientific evidence that will be utilized to form
the scientific conclusions. Therefore, it allows advancement of knowledge in a
certain field that can be reviewed and replicated by the future researchers too.
3. How does the hypothesis contribute to the overall research progress?
- Hypothesis contributes to the overall research progress by providing a path
in which the researchers must go through. During the beginning of a
research study, the researchers formulate research questions which will be
the basis of their hypothesis. And based on my perception, us researchers
must always formulate a desirable, positive hypothesis to prove the
importance of the study. Hence, hypothesis serves as our path that motivates
us to conduct researching and experimenting to prove that our hypotheses
were right and accurate.
II. Identify the type of hypothesis exemplified by the given statements. Write NULL if
the statement pertains to the null hypothesis; otherwise, write ALTERNATIVE if it
pertains to the alternative hypothesis.
ALTERNATIVE 1. The higher the unemployment rate, the higher will be the poverty
and crime rate.
NULL 5. There is no relationship between the use of social media and the attention
span of students in school.
NULL 7. Sex education for high school students does not affect the rates of teen
pregnancy.
ALTERNATIVE 8. People who value freedom and longevity are more likely to
experience happiness than those who do not value their freedom and longevity.
NULL 9. The number of lectures attended by the senior high school students does
not affect their final exam scores.
ALTERNATIVE 10. If you sleep at least 6 hours a day, you will get a higher score on
the test than if you get less sleep.
