professor in the department of hemato-oncology at the CHUM
Bertrand Routy (University of Montreal). Upon his recruitment to the CRCHUM in
2018 after completing his PhD with Pr. Laurence Zitvogel, Dr. Routy
Associate Professor
quickly established himself as the scientific director of the CHUM
CRCHUM, Université de Montréal Microbiome Centre where he began his work to develop novel
microbiome-based therapeutics in oncology.
His work contributed to the discovery of the gut microbiome as a novel
prognostic biomarker for immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in various
cancers. He characterized the deleterious impact of antibiotic-related
gut dysbiosis on ICI outcomes, which led to pivotal changes in clinical
oncology practice. Moreover, he demonstrated that modulation of the
microbiome by fecal microbiota transplantation, probiotics, and
prebiotic supplementation had the potential to circumvent ICI
resistance. His team currently leads several microbiota-centered trials
in oncology ranging from phase I to phase II trials, with the aim of
decreasing primary ICI resistance.
Dr. Routy is internationally recognized as a leader in the microbiome
field with more than 17,300 citations including publications in Science,
Nature Medicine and Annals of oncology, and h-index of 43. Moreover,

Context: The theme of student mobility is in line with the strategic priorities of the Djerba Declaration: Partnership
for Health Equity in the Francophone Community. A fundamental objective of medical training is to help learners
build their own professional identity, often influenced by that of teachers and patient-partners.
Methodology: The Symposium is organized as a World café-style workshop involving students and healthcare
professionals. Participants are arranged in sub-groups around tables to discuss the questions posed by the
moderator under each objective, followed by a summary presentation of the exchanges from each round, and then a
general discussion.
Expected results: The recommendations arising from the students' work will guide the implementation of a new
strategic approach to healthcare student mobility.
Conclusion: Student mobility is a determinant of Social Responsibility in Health; the results of the Symposium will be
presented and discussed in this orientation on the 23rd International University Days of the CIDMEF (Strasbourg, 1-
4 May 2024) in the presence of the Deans of the Faculties of Medicine of the French-speaking world.

SYNOPSIS
The Joe Doupe Young Investigator award is given to a health scientist that demonstrates excellence in
research training and has accomplished a significant and innovative study in the initial stages of their
independent academic appointment.
Immune checkpoint blockers (ICB) have revolutionized the treatment of various cancers in both early and
advanced stages. However current available biomarkers are neither sensitive nor specific at predicting
outcome, and resistance to ICB is inevitable for most patients. Therefore, there is a world-wide unmet
medical need for breakthrough concepts to predict outcome to ICB and to develop strategies to enhance
long-term outcomes. Robust evidence has pointed to the various mechanisms by which intestinal bacteria
act on distal tumors, and metagenomics profiling of patient stool prior to ICB revealed that baseline
microbiome composition is associated with ICB clinical outcome and immune related toxicities. Recently
positive clinical trials combining fecal microbiota transplantation with ICB opened novel therapeutic
avenues in oncology.

SYNOPSIS
Excellence in medical education is increasingly being judged through the lens of public good.
Accreditation in Canada now requires medical schools to demonstrate how they are impacting the
priority health needs of local citizens and society, beyond just graduating a fit-for-purpose
workforce. The goal of positively impacting population health outcomes has become a driving
force behind an international movement to advance social accountability and accreditation
standards. This workshop builds upon the work of the AFMC International Think Tank on
Accreditation and Social Accountability and will endeavor to share evidence about accreditation
as a lever for change and highlight steps being taken towards building consensus around medical
education accreditation standards for better care.
1. Provide participants with an overview of what has been done to advance social
accountability and accreditation and what is being planned; specifically
international efforts to build consensus;
2. Provide participants an opportunity to learn from international leaders in
accreditation research and social accountability and identify ways to get
involved.

Charles Boelen Lecture
SYNOPSIS
The AFMC Charles Boelen International Social Accountability Award was created in 2014. This
AFMC award named after Dr. Charles Boelen, a world leader in Social Accountability aims to
celebrate individuals, groups of people or organizations whose professional accomplishments
reflect the principles of social accountability as defined in the Global Consensus for Social
Accountability of Medical Schools.
This lecture highlights the work of the AFMC Charles Boelen International Social Accountability
Award recipient and is an opportunity for attendees to engage in a meaningful conversation
about social accountability.
The Lecture will discuss the social mission of medical schools and how that can impact graduates’
practice. The discussion will be by looking at a case study of a medical school.

SYNOPSIS
2023 was the hottest year on record. We are seeing the impact of climate change on our wellbeing, our
security and our environment.
At the international level, leadership is failing us. The fossil fuel industry is dominating conversations and
we saw this at the most recent UN’s conference of the parties (COP). But on the local scale, the
revolution is happening.
Renewable energy is now the cheapest forms of electricity and communities and municipalities are
putting in the work to get off of fossil fuels. Community-centered climate solutions are here and
accessible.
We all need to come together to change the way for the sake of our planetary health but it’s not so
daunting if we look to what’s already happening on the ground. Hear from Severn what we need to do.
1. Recognize and strategize to counter the fossil fuel industry’s tactics to stall climate
policies;
2. Actively seek education to develop and disseminate community-centered climate
solutions here in Canada;
3. Engage in the process of change at the personal, community and political level.

The 3 Ps of a Curricular Edifice
Donald Boudreau
Associate Professor
McGill University
SYNOPSIS
The AFMC Gold Humanism Award and Lecture was created in 2018 to emphasize, reinforce and
enhance the importance of humanistic qualities in healthcare and academic medicine. Every year,
the recipient of the AFMC Gold Humanism Award is invited to deliver a lecture at the
International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM).
The lecture will focus on the needs of learners in the clinical setting illustrating how these needs
are occasionally misaligned with the practices and priorities of clinical teachers. A simple model,
based on a three level curricular edifice, will be presented as a possible corrective lens.

The struggling medical student: Insights
from lived experience research
Saturday, April 13, 2024
3:00 - 4:30 p.m. PDT
SYNOPSIS
The AFMC John Ruedy Award for Excellence In Graduate Health Professions Education Scholarship
recognizes learners for their scholarly potential in health professions education (HPE). The recipient of the
John Ruedy Award will present their innovative work to the ICAM audience at the John Ruedy
symposium.
Academic underperformance and struggle are critical issues in undergraduate medical education. Three
questions will be explored in this session: 1) What is academic struggle? 2) How is it experienced? and 3)
What does it do? Using a phenomenological approach and concepts from philosophy, the presenter
demonstrates how attending to the lived experience of struggling medical students can challenge our
current understandings of remediation and improve the way learners are supported through their
challenges.
1. Identify gaps within the research literature on academic struggle in medical education and
evaluate the consequences of these gaps in knowledge;
2. Assess what insights a phenomenological study can bring to current understandings of
academic struggle in medical education;
3. Recognize the susceptibility of struggling medical students to moral harms such as epistemic
injustice.

CMEJ Top Article Sessi on
SYNOPSIS
This session will feature several articles published recently in the CMEJ identified as “most influential”. Authors will
outline the implications of their paper and ways they have seen or hope it will influence medical education. Ample
time will be provided for discussion. This will be a dynamic session and an opportunity to interact with some
authors at the forefront of medical education.
The CMEJ Senior Section Editors and its Management Board provided guidance for the selection process. Papers
were initially screened into a nomination pool based on citations, views, and downloads. The final decision was
made by the Editor-in-Chief based on recommendations and direction from the Senior Section Editors.
Plan to attend this session, the first of its kind at ICAM. Consider preparing by reading the articles in the CMEJ as
authors will not be giving a thorough presentation of their work.
“The effect of COVID-19 on medical students’ education and wellbeing: a cross-sectional survey” by Hassan ElHawary, Ali Salimi,
Natasha Barone, Peter Alam, and Stephanie Thibaudeau. Vol 12 No 3 (2021) pp 92-99.
“Emerging concepts in the CanMEDS physician competency framework” by Brent Thoma, Linda Snell, Rob Anderson, Jason Frank,
Leon Tourian, Nancy Fowler, Carlos Gomez-Garibello, Andrew Hall, Evelyn Constantin, Adelle Atkinson, Theresa M. Chan, Meredith
Giuliani, Heather Waters, Nicole Labine, Louise Samson, Anna Karwowska, and Elaine Van Melle. Vol 14 No 1 (2023) pp 4-12.
“Reflections on addressing antisemitism in a Canadian faculty of medicine” by Ayelet Kuper Vol 14 No 2 (2023) pp 158-170.
1. Describe how each paper can influence the medical education community in Canada
and more broadly;
2. Plan for changes they will make in their approach to medical education, based on
information presented by the authors.

Monday, April 15, 2024
8:00 - 9:30 a.m. PDT
SYNOPSIS
Learning the foundational sciences forms an important basis of the training programs for many healthcare
providers, and health sciences educators play an essential role in teaching them. However, the world around us
is more than ever changing rapidly and new developments in didactical and technological areas occur. Science
educators are expected to take on additional teaching roles for which they are often not adequately prepared,
and they face issues of educator and student diversity, equity, and inclusion, scholarly expectations in career
development, and quickly advancing technologies taking over traditional teaching methods.
In this symposium, we will discuss several of these challenges like the increasing role of scholarship and
publications, different pathways for science educators to medical education and leadership, and the uprise of
educational technologies taking over content expert role of educators. In the general discussion we will seek
for insights from the audience.
