DAY 1 A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson

Hello there! How are you?

Now, let us start by discussing measures of central tendency:

WEEK 1 |Page 1
Property of Pampanga High School - DepEd Division of City of San Fernando, Pampanga
A measure of central tendency is a single value that attempts to describe a set of data
by identifying the middle or central position within that set of data. As such, measures of
central tendency are sometimes called measures of central location. They are also
classified as summary statistics.

The mean (often called the average) is most likely the measure of central tendency that
you are most familiar with, but there are others, such as the median and the mode.

In statistics, when we add a set of numbers and divide it by the number of elements in
the set, the result is called the arithmetic mean or just the mean.
The element in a set of data which has the greatest frequency is referred to as the
mode.

When the set of data is arranged in increasing or decreasing order, the middle position
where there are many elements above as there are many elements below is called the median.

Example #1: Given the set: 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 11, 2, 5

First, the set of data is arranged in increasing order

2, 5, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 11
64
a. The mean is 2 + 5 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 8 + 9 +11 = = 7.11
9
9

b. The median is 7 2, 5, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9,11 , since the middle number is 7 .

c. The mode is 7, since 7 occurs the most number of times.

Example #2: Given the set: 2, 5, 8, 4, 5, 7, 6, 9

46
a. The mean is 2 + 5 + 8 + 4 + 5 + 7 + 6 +9 = = 5.75
8
8

5+6 11
b. The median is = = 5.5 2, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
2 2
The numbers are arranged in ascending order. There are 2 medians in this
example so the two numbers should be added and be divided by 2.

c. The mode is 5, since 5 occurs the most number of times.(2 times)

Note: In the second example, even though the numbers are not arranged in ascending order in
getting the mean, the answer that will be obtained will be the same. Whereas in getting the median
the numbers should be arranged either in ascending or descending order to obtain the correct
answer. In getting the mode, just get the number with the highest frequency or occurrence.

Example #3: Given the ages of fifty Junior High school students in
Pampanga High School with their corresponding frequency.

Note:
1. Multiply the ages in the first column and frequency in the second
column to get the product in the third column fx
2. Add all the products in the third column to get ∑fx ( summation of the
product of the frequency (f) and the ages(x), where N is the total
frequency

b. The median is 13, since 50 /2 = 25, the 25th score is 13 (add all the
frequency from left to right or right to left)

The mode is 13, since 13 occurs the most number of times.(12 times)

Did You Know That…

SIR RONALD FISHER

Touted as the greatest scientist of his time, Sir Ronald

Fisher (1890-1962) was a British statistician and biologist who was
known for his contributions to experimental design and population
genetics. He is known as the father of modern statistics and
experimental design.

What do you do when you’re lost? You use tools like a

compass and GPS to figure out where you are and how to
get where you are going. Well, in statistics there are ways to
figure out where a data point or set falls. These are called
measures of position.

C. Presenting the Lesson

You have learned in Grade 7 that a measure of central tendency such as the mean,
median and mode, is a single number that represents a set of data. On the other hand, a
measure of variability such as range, variance, and standard deviation describes the amount
of spread in a set of data. In this lesson, you will learn the measure of Position. As the name
suggests, a measure of position, is a number that tells where the score relative to the others
in a set of data.

The understanding that you will gain in doing these activities will help you understand the
measures of position.

beginning.

The Quartile for Ungrouped Data

The quartiles are the score-points which divide a distribution into four equal parts. Twenty-
five percent (25%) of the distribution are below the first quartile (Q1), fifty percent (50%) are below
the second quartile (Q2), and seventy-five percent (75%) are below the third quartile (Q3). Q1 is
called the lower quartile and Q3 is the upper quartile. Q1 < Q2 < Q3, where Q2 is the median. The
difference between Q3 and Q1 is the interquartile range.

Since the second quartile is equal to the median, the steps in finding the median are the
same as the steps in finding the Q1and the Q3.

Q1 Q2 Q3

a. 25% of the data has a value ≤ Q1.

b. 50% of the data has a value ≤ Md or Q2.
c. 75% of the data has a value ≤ Q1.

The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of customers who

Example #1: came into his café each hour in a day. The results were 14, 10, 12, 9,
17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10, and 11. Find the lower quartile and upper quartile of
the data.
Solution:

• The ascending order of the data is 5, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14, 17

WEEK 1 |Page 6
Property of Pampanga High School - DepEd Division of City of San Fernando, Pampanga
• The least value in the data is 5 and the greatest value in the data is 17.
• The middle value in the data is 10. (note: this is also second Quartile, Q2.)
• The lower quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the least value in the
data set.
• So, the lower quartile, Q1 is 9.
• The upper quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the greatest value in
the data set.
• So, the upper quartile, Q2 is 14

Example #2: Find the average of the lower quartile and the upper quartile of the
following data.
Find also its interquartile range.

Component Quantity
Hard disk 290
Monitors 370
Keyboards 260
Mouse 180
Speakers 430
Solution:
• The increasing order of the data is 180, 260, 290, 370, 430.
• The least value of the data is 180 and the greatest value of the data is 430.
• The middle value of the data is 290. (this is also Q2)
• The lower quartile is the value that is between the least value and the middle value.
• So, the lower quartile is 260. (this is also Q1)
• The upper quartile is the value that is between the greatest value and the middle value.
• So, the upper quartile is 370. (this is also Q3)

• The average of the lower quartile and the upper quartile

𝑄 +𝑄 260+370 630
is equal to 1 3 = = =315.
2 2 2

• Interquartile range= Q3-Q1 = 370-260 = 110.

Now it’s your turn to answer the next activity:

Activity #3: FIND MY QUARTILES

DAY 2 D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

DECILES
Another measure of position are the deciles. Deciles are similar to quartiles. If the
quartiles are the three score points that divide a distribution into four equal parts, the deciles are
the nine score points that divide a distribution into ten equal parts. These nine deciles denoted
by D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, and D9, divide the sorted values into ten equal parts.
The comparison of quartiles and deciles is illustrated below.

25% 25% 25% 25%

Median

10% 10% 10% 10% 10% 10% 10% 10% 10% 10%

D1 is the first decile, which is a point that has 10% of the values below it.
D2 is the second decile, which is a point that has 20% of the values below it.
D3 is the third decile, which is a point that has 30% of the values below it.
D4 is the fourth decile, which is a point that has 40% of the values below it.
D5 is the fifth decile, which is a point that has 50% of the values below it.
D6 is the sixth decile, which is a point that has 60% of the values below it.
D7 is the seventh decile, which is a point that has 70% of the values below it.
D8 is the eighth decile, which is a point that has 80% of the values below it.
D9 is the ninth decile, which is a point that has 90% of the values below it.

As shown above, the fifth decile of D5 is equal to the second quartile or Q2 or the
median.
How about the first quartile or Q1, what is its equivalent in deciles?
Since the first quartile or Q1 is at 25% of the data and 25% is between the second decile
or D2 and the third decile or D3, Q1 then is equivalent to D2.5.
Can you now identify the equivalent of Q3 in deciles? If your answer is D7.5, then you are right.

Let us have an example:

The scores of 9 students in a 20-item quiz are: 15, 13, 20, 16, 14, 19,
Example #1: 11, 10, and 9. What is D5? D2? D6?

Solution: First, arrange the data from lowest to highest.

9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20

WEEK 1 |Page 8
Property of Pampanga High School - DepEd Division of City of San Fernando, Pampanga
What is D5?
Since D5 is equivalent to Q2 and median, all we have to do is to find the middlemost score.

9 10 11 13 14 15 16 19 20
Median
Q2
D5
The middle number is 14. Therefore, the fifth decile or D 5 is 14.

What is D2?

9 10 11 13 14 15 16 19 20
D2

Since deciles are 9 score points that divide the data into ten equal parts, then each
score may represent the deciles. If asked for the D2, the second score may represent the D2
which is 10.

What is D8?

9 10 11 13 14 15 16 19 20
The eighth score is 19, therefore, D8 is 19. D8

TRY THIS!
Refer to the data above.
1. What is D2.5 or Q1?
2. What is D7.5 or Q3?

If your answer in number 1 is D2.5 = 10.5, then your answer is correct. Since D2.5 is between
10+11
D2 and D3, we find the average of 10 and 11 and that is = 10.5.
2
If your answer in number 2 is D7.5 = 17.5, then your answer is correct. Since D7.5 is between
16+19
D7 and D8, we find the average of 16 and 19 and that is = 17.5.

DAY 3 E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills # 2

You just have learned quartiles and deciles. Now, I am sure that you are ready to learn
the next measure of position which is percentile.

What are percentiles? How are these compared to quartiles and deciles?
The percentiles are the ninety-nine score points which divide a distribution into one
hundred equal parts, so that each part represents the data set. It is used to characterize
values according to the percentage below them. For example, the first percentile (P 1)
separates the lowest 1% from the other 99%, the second percentile (P 2) separates the
lowest 2% from the other 98%, and so on.

Look at the illustration below of percentiles as compared with quartiles and deciles.

Example # 1:

Based on the illustration above, we can say that P25 is equal to D2.5 and Q1.

Now, try the next example.

Example # 2:

How about P50? What is its equivalent to quartiles and deciles?

By looking at the illustration, if you have thought that P 50 is equal to Q2 and D5, then you
are correct and you may proceed with the activity below. If not, then you have to go back
to the first example and try it again.

Alright, after knowing what percentiles are, let us relate the concept to real-life situations in
order for you to appreciate this measure of position.

Example # 1:

Rafael has taken a summative test in Mathematics. His score is the 30 th percentile. What
does this mean?

If Rafael’s score is the 30th percentile, then this only means that 30% of the students have
scored less than or equal his score.

Now, try the net example.

Example # 2:

Rica is an executive assistant in a big company. Her salary is in the 90 th percentile. Should
she be glad or not about her salary?

If your answer is that she should be glad about her salary since 90% of the employees
receive less than or equal to her salary and only 10% of them receive greater than hers, then
you are right and you may proceed to the activity below. If your answer is the opposite, then you
have to go back to the first example and try it again.

Activity #6: STATUS CHECK

Interpret the result and justify. (5 points each)

Given a test in Calculus, the 75th percentile score is 15.

Measures of position give us a way to see where a certain data point or value falls in a
sample or distribution. A measure can tell us whether a value is about the average, or whether
it's unusually high or low. Measures of position are used for quantitative data that falls on some
numerical scale.

Quantiles can be applied when:

• Dealing with large amount of data, which includes the timely results for standardized
tests in schools, etc.
• Trying to discover the smallest as well as the largest values in a given distribution.
• Examining financial fields for academic as well as statistical studies.

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

LET’S SUMMARIZE

Measures of position quartile, decile, and percentile are also known as fractiles or quantiles, that
divide a distribution into four, ten, and hundred equal parts.

You have learned the following:

• Quartiles – the score points which divide a distribution into four groups. Twenty-five
percent (25%) of the distribution fall below the first quartile, fifty percent (50%) fall below
the second quartile, and seventy-five percent (75%) fall below the third quartile.

• Deciles – the nine score-points which divide a distribution into ten groups. These deciles
are denoted as D1, D2, D3, … D9.

• Percentiles – the ninety-nine score points which divide a distribution into one hundred
1
groups so that each group represents of the data set. They are used to characterize
100
values according to the percentage of values below them.

KEY TO CORRECTION:

ACTIVITY#1: Measures of Central Tendency

A.
118
a. The mean is 10 + 15 + 14 + 13 + 18 + 11 + 9 + 8 + 14 +6 = = 11.8
10
10
11+13 24
b. The median is = = 12 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 14, 15, 18
2 2
The numbers are arranged in ascending order. There are 2 medians in this example so
the two numbers are added and divided by 2.
c. The mode is 14, since 14 occurs the most number of times.(2 times)

12 5 60
total N =43 ∑fx = 665

∑fx 665
a. 𝑥̅ = = = 15.47
𝑁 43

b. The median is 15, since 43 /2 = 21.5 or 22 the 22nd score is 15 (add all the frequency
from left to right or right to left)

c. The modes are 17 and 15, since both occurs the most number of times.(8 times)
This example is bimodal (2 modes)

ACTIVITY#2: Watch This!

1. It means that 2 or 20% of the students are shorter than you.

2. Middle quartile is also the median.
a. The first quartile, 3, is obtained by observing the position of 3 which
is in the middle of the numbers from 1 to 5.
b. The second quartile, 5, is obtained by observing the position of 5
which is in the middle of the numbers from 1 to 9.
c. The third quartile, 8, is obtained by observing the position of 8
which is in the middle of the numbers from 6 to 9.

3. Discuss briefly
a. Your observation about the quartile.
Q2 is just the median of the set of data, Q1 is the midpoint of the first data and
Q2 while Q3 is the midpoint of Q2 and the last data

b. How each value was obtained?

First arranged the set of data in ascending order Then Q2 is obtained by finding
the median(or middle) of the set of data; Q 1 is obtained by finding the middle
between the first data and Q2 and while Q3 is obtained by finding the middle
between Q3 and the last data. Middle is also the midpoint

c. Your generalization regarding your observation.

Quartiles are simply boundaries of the four division of sets of data arranged in
ascending order. Namely Q2, the second quartile which is the midpoint of the
first and the last data; Q1, the first quartile which is the midpoint of the first
data and Q2; and lastly Q3 which is the midpoint of Q2 and the last data.
