Heat Transfer
Tutorial No.4
1. Define the term “thermal insulation”. How does thermal insulation work? What
is thermal insulation used for? Give example and mention the benefits.
2. A 10 mm diameter cable is to be laid in atmosphere of 20 °C with outside heat
transfer coefficient 8.5 W/m2·°C. The surface temperature of cable is likely to
be 65 °C due to heat generation within. Will the rubber insulation, k = 0.155
W/m·°C, be effective? If yes how much? [rc = 18.235 mm; Q/Lbare = 12.02 W/m;
Q/Lins = 19.1 W/m; 58.90 %]
3. Calculate insulation thickness (minimum value) required for a pipe carrying
steam at 180°C. The pipe size (r1) is 8" and the maximum allowable temperature
of outer wall of insulation is 50°C. Thermal conductivity of the insulation
material for the temperature range of the pipe can be taken as 0.04 W/m·K. The
heat loss from steam per meter of pipe length has to be limited to 80 W/m.
[Insulation thickness = 0.1025 m]
4. A 3-mm-diameter and 5-m-long electric wire is tightly wrapped with a 2-mm
thick plastic cover whose thermal conductivity is k = 0.15 W/m·°C. Electrical
measurements indicate that a current of 10 A passes through the wire and there
is a voltage drop of 8 V along the wire. If the insulated wire is exposed to a
medium at 𝑇∞ = 30°C with a heat transfer coefficient of h = 12 W/m2·°C,
Calculate the temperature at the interface of the wire and the plastic cover in
steady operation. Also estimate whether doubling the thickness of the plastic
cover will increase or decrease this interface temperature. [Use 𝑄̇ = 𝑊̇ = 𝑉𝐼,
Answer: T = 105°C, 0.0125 m]
5. The engine cylinder of a motorcycle is constructed of 2024-T6 aluminum alloy
and is of height H = 0.15m and outside diameter D = 50 mm. Under typical
operating conditions the outer surface of the cylinder is at a temperature of 500
K and is exposed to ambient air at 300 K, with a convection coefficient of 50
W/m2·K. Annular fins are integrally cast with the cylinder to increase heat
transfer to the surroundings. Consider five such fins, which are of thickness t =
6 mm, length L = 20 mm, and equally spaced. Calculate the increase in heat
transfer due to use of the fins. [Q = 454 W]
