DEFINITION
 RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS IS A CHRONIC
DESTRUCTIVE INFLAMMATORY PROCESS INVOLVING
TISSUES IN THE JOINT WHICH HAVE ORIGINATED
FROM EMBRYONIC MESENCHYME.
 IT MOSTLY OCCUR IN THE DISTAL JOINTS OF HANDS
AND FEET.
HOME EXERCISE
 AQUATIC EXERCISES IS A SAFE FORM OF
AEROBIC EXERCISES.
 THE THREE MAIN LEVELS OF EXERCISE ARE:
 1.THERAPEUTIC/REHABILITATIVE
 2. RECREATIONAL/LEISURE
 3. COMPETITIVE/ELITE
1.THERAPEUTIC/REHABILITATIVE

 THERAPEUTIC EXERCISES, PRESCRIBED BY HEALTH


PROFESSIONALS.
 A THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE PROGRAM IS FIRST STEP
FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE BEEN INACTIVE, HAVE
RESTRICTED JOINT MOTION OR MUSCLE
STRENGTH, ARE EXPERIENCING JOINT PAIN OR ARE
RECOVERING FROM SURGERY SUCH AS JOINT
REPLACEMENT.
2.RECREATIONAL/LEISURE

 THIS EXERCISE CAN BE DONE IN A CONTROLLED


AND SAFE MANNER AND PLACE LITTLE STRESS AND
LOADS ON AFFECTED JOINTS.
3.COMPETITIVE/ELITE

 COMPETITIVE OR ELITE LEVEL ACTIVITIES ARE


PERFORMED AT HIGHER INTENSITIES, FOR LONGER
DURATION AND REQURE GREATER SKILL AND
TRAINING.

 THERE ARE FOUR MAJOR TYPE OF EXERCISE.
 1.RANGE OF MOTION AND STRETCHING
 EXERCISES
 2.STRENGTHENING EXERCISE
 3. AEROBIC EXERCISES
 4. BODY AWARENESS EXERCISES
1. ROM AND STRETCHING
EXERCISES
 IT HELP TO MAINTAIN AND IMPROVE THE
FLEXIBILITY IN AFFECTED JOINTS AND
SURROUNDING MUSCLES.
 ROM EXERCISES :5-10 TIMES/DAILY
 ROM EXERCISE IN THE EVENING HELPS REDUCE
JOINT STIFFNESS.
 STRETCHING EXERCISES:30 SECOND HOLD
 : 3 DAYS/WEEK
2.STRENGTHENING EXERCISES

 IN THIS EXERCISE MUSCLE BECOME STRONGER , IT


PROVIDES GREATER JOINT SUPPORT AND HELPS
REDUCE LOADING AND STRESS THROUGH THE
PAINFULL JOINT.
 8-10 SETS FOR MAJOR MUSCLE GROUPS
 2-3 TIMES/WEEK
 8-12 REPITATION
 IN OLDER PEOPLE 10-15 REP WITH LESS RESISTANCE
3.AEROBIC EXERCISES

 PEOPLE WITH ARTHRITIS, THIS TYPE OF EXERCISES HAS


BEEN BENEFITS FOR WEIGHT CONTROL, MOOD, SLEEP
AND GENERAL HEALTH.
 SAFE FORM OF AEROBIC EXERCISE INCLUDE WALKING,
AEROBIC DANCE, AQUATIC EXERCISE, BICYCLING OR
EXERCISING ON EQUIPMENT SUCH AS STATIONARY
BIKES, TREADMILLS OR ELLIPTICAL TRAINERS.
 150 MIN OF MODERATE INTENSITY/WEEK
 10-20MIN/DAY
4. BODY AWARENESS EXERCISES

 A FOURTH AND LESS RECOGNIZED, THOUGH VERY


IMPORTANT GROUP OF EXERCISES IS REFERRED TO
TOGETHER AS BODY AWARENESS EXERCISES.
 THESE INCLUDE ACTIVITIES TO IMPROVE POSTURE,
BALACE, JOINT POSITION SENCE, COORDINATION
AND RELAXATION.
WHEN TO EXERCISE?

 IN RA, FOR THOSE WITH A LOT OF MORNING


STIFFNESS, GENTLE ROM EXERCISES MAY BE
HELPFUL.
 IF PATIENT HAD TROUBLE IN SLEEPING, AVOID
DOING AEROBIC EXERCISES WITHIN 2 HOURS OF
BEDTIME; HOWEVER, STRETCHING AND
RELAXATION EXERCISES MAY HELP.
WHERE TO EXERCISE?

 IT IS ACCORDING TO PATIENTS CHOISE.


 AQUATIC OR POOL BASED EXERCISE IS ANOTHER
GOOD OPTION FOR PEOPLE WITH ARTHRITIS .
 THE BUOYANCY EFFECTS OF WATER RESULT IN LESS
STRESS ON THE WEIGHT BEARING JOINTS AND
MARKED PAIN RELIEF.
