CL. 8.2.1.2,
Moment Capacity of section (M) = 1.2 X Zxx X fy / Ƴm0 = 2247 kN-m IS:800-2007
CL. 8.4.1,
Shear Capacity of section (V) = Av X fyw / √3 / Ƴm0 = 1733 kN IS:800-2007
2
Shear Area = Av = D X tw for hot rolled sections = 10005 mm
yield strength of web = fyw = 330 mPa
100% of Shear Capacity, S = 1733 kN
Compressive Force on Web = 1.2 X Aw X fyw = 3342 kN
Design Force for Web Splice Plates, Fdw = 3342 kN
It is assumed that force due to moment is transferred through flanges & shear is transferred through web.
Force carried by each flange Fafm = M/(D - Tf) = 3389 kN
Force carried by each flange = 1.2 X fy X Af = 3208 kN
Therefore, Design Force Faf = 3389 kN
2 Design of Splice Plates
2.1 Design of Flange Splice Plate
Width of Splice Plate (Bfs) = 300 mm
Assume Bolt diameter (Dbf) = 30 mm
Hole diameter (Dbfh) = 33 mm
Net width of splice plate = Bnfs = Bfs - 2 X Dbfh = 234 mm
Thickness of Splice Plate Tfs = Faf / (Bnfs X ( fy / γm0)) = 48.28 mm
Thickness of each Splice Plate = = 24.14 mm
Let us provide two flange plates (one on inner side & other on outer side) on each flange
so that the bolts are in double shear.
Therefore, thickness of each flange plate = 25 mm
Hence Ok
Since the flange plate on inner side of the flange would not be of full width,
the adequacy of available width to be checked.
Width of flange plate to be provided on inner side of flange, B = 120 mm
Net width of inner side flange plate, Bnfsi = Bfsi - Dbfh = 87 mm
Tensile Capacity of two inner plates due to yielding of gross section Tdg1 = 2 X Ap X fy / γm0
= 1800 kN
Tensile Capacity oftwo inner plates due to rupture of critical section Tdn1 = 2 X α X An X fu / γm1
= 1535 kN
2
Net Area An = ( Bnfsi X Thicknes of plate) = 2175 mm
α = 0.9
Tensile Capacity of outer plate due to yielding of gross section Tdg2 = A X fy / γm0
= 2250 kN
Tensile Capacity of outer plate due to rupture of critical section Tdn2 = α X An X fu / γm1
= 2064 kN
Total Tensile Capacity of Flange Splice Plates = min of (Tdg1 & Tdn1) + min of (Tdg2 & Tdn2)
= 3864 kN
> 3389 kN
Hence Ok
2.2 Design of Web Splice Plate
Depth of web (dw) = 582 mm
Depth of web splice plate (Dws) = 500 mm
Assume Bolt diameter (Dbw) = 30 mm
No. of Bolts in each row = 4
Hole diameter (Dbwh) = 33 mm
Thickness of web splice plate Tws = (Fdw/2) / (Dws X fy / γm0) = 11.1 mm
Provide thickness of web splice plate, Tws,prov = 16 mm
Hence Ok
Shear Capacity of two Web Splice Plates = 2 X (D ws - n X Dbwh ) X Tws,pro X fy / √3 / γm0) =
= 2040 kN
> 1733 kN
Hence Ok
3 Design of Bolts
3.1 Check for Long Joints for Flange Splice (Clause 10.3.3.1 of IS800-2007)
Length of web Joint (Distance b/w 1st & Last row bolts), Ljw = 1100 mm
length of joint as per 15Dbf = 450 mm
Since length of joint is more than 15Dbw, correction factor is applicable CL. 10.3.3.1
IS:800-2007
βljw = 1.075 - Ljw / (200Dbf) but 0.75 ≤ βljw ≤ 1 = 0.89
0.75 ≤ βljw ≤ 1, Hence Ok
Bolt Capacity (Bolt Value) shall be multiplied by βljf.
No of row 2
Number of Bolts in one row, n 7
Length of Flange Splice Plate Lfs = {(n-1) X Pb + 2 X Eb} X 2 = 1100 mm
Width of Plate = 300 mm
Check for Long Joints for Web Splice (Clause 10.3.3.1 of IS800-2007)
Length of web Joint (Distance b/w 1st & Last row bolts), Ljw = 800 mm
length of joint as per 15Dbw = = 450 mm
Since length of joint is not more than 15Dbw, correction factor is not applicable
βljw = 1.075 - Ljw / (200Dbw) but 0.75 ≤ βljw ≤ 1 = 1
Hence Ok
