4 CATEGORIES OF HARDWARE

TOOLS

1. ELECTRO-STATIC
DISCHARGE TOOLS ( ESD
TOOLS)
2. HAND TOOLS
3. CLEANING TOOLS
4. DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS

STATIC ELECTRICITY – is easily generated

by friction on carpets, tile flooring,
clothing, hair, fabric and etc. The friction
of moving air alone will charge
suspended particles and cause
the build-up of static electrical
on people and objects in the
environment.

Grounded anti-static work mats

used with anti-static wrist
straps provide the most basic
means for the controlled
discharge of electro-static
electricity
EXAMPLES OF ESD TOOLS
1. ANTI-STATIC WRIST STRAP – used
to prevent ESD damage to computer
equipment
2. ANTI-STATIC MAT – used to stand
on or place hardware on to prevent
static electricity from building up.

B. HAND TOOLS – is a device for performing

work on a material or a physical system using
only hands. The hand tools can be manually used employing force, or electrically powered, using electrical current.

EXAMPLES:
1. FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER – used to
tighten or loosen slotted screws.
2. PHILIPS SCREW DRIVER – used to
loosen or tighten cross-head screws.
3. TORX SCREW DRIVER – used to
loosen or tighten screws that have star-
liked depression on the top, a feature
that is mainly found on laptop.
4. NEEDLE-NOSE PLIER – used to hold
small parts
5. WIRE CUTTER- used to strip or cut
wires.
6. TWEEZERS – used to manipulate
small parts.
7. FLASHLIGHT – used to light areas
that you cannot see clearly.

C. CLEANING TOOLS – having the

appropriate cleaning tools is essential when
repairing or maintaining computers. Using
these tools ensures that computer
components are not damage during
cleaning.

EXAMPLES:
1. LINT-FREE CLOTH – used to clean
different computer components without
scratching or leaving debris.
2. COMPRESSED AIR – used to blow
away dust and debris from different
computer parts without touching the
components.
3. CABLE TIES – used to bundle cables
neatly inside and outside of a computer.

D. DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS – Computers are easier to use and are more dependable
with each new generation hardware and operating system updates, but that
doesn’t mean that they are problem-free.

EXAMPLES:
1. MULTIMETER- used to test the integrity of circuits and the quality of
electricity in computer components.
2. LOOPBACK ADAPTER – it is used to test the functionality of ports.
3. LAN TESTER – ensures out LAN cables are working. It is used for testing
internet cables for faults or missing pair connections.

HOW DO WE TEST A FAULTY LAN CABLE?

1. Attach both end of the LAN cable to the RJ45 port of the LAN TESTER.
2. Switch ON the LAN Tester. If all the lighter are working as pair, then LAN
cable is working. But if one light fails;
3. Try to re-crimp by using the crimping tool and do steps 1 and 2.
4. If the problem still persist, try to replace the RJ45 one at a time.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF CONNECTORS

1. RJ 45
2. UTP CABLE ( commonly known as LAN CABLE)
