The document discusses the linear model of communication, which describes communication as a one-way process from sender to receiver. It outlines the key elements and types of the linear model, including Aristotle's model, Lasswell's model, the Shannon-Weaver model, and Berlo's S-M-C-R model.

Linear Model

Welcome
Welcome! Join us on our topic, Models of Communication.
Our group will be discussing the first model, the linear model
of communication, and its types.
Linear Model
The linear model of communication is a simplistic and one-way, non-interactive
communication model that describes communication as a linear process that flows in a
straight line from a sender to a receiver. It is one of the earliest and most basic models
used to understand communication, but it lacks complexity and does not fully capture the
richness and nuances of real-world communication interactions.
ELEMENTS OF LINEAR MODEL

Sender Receiver
01 04
The sender is the person or entity who The person or entity for whom
initiates the communication by creating the message is intended.
and transmitting a message.

Message
02
The information, idea, or content that the
sender wishes to convey to the receiver.

Channel
03
The medium or means through which the
message is transmitted from the sender
to the receiver.
Types Of Linear
Model Of
Communication
1. Aristotle’s Model

2. Lasswell’s Model

3. Shannon-Weaver Model

4. Berlo’s S-M-C-R Model.

SHANNON-WEAVER MODEL

Shannon Weaver model of communication was created in 1948

when Claude Elwood Shannon wrote an article “A Mathematical
Theory of Communication” in Bell System Technical Journal with
Warren Weaver. The Mathematical theory later came to be known as
Shannon Weaver model of communication or “mother of all
models.” The sender encodes the message and sends it to the
receiver through a technological channel like telephone and
telegraph.
Berlo’s S-M-C-R Model
David Berlo conceptualized the Sender-Message-
Channel-Receiver (SMCR) model during the sixties.
He postulated this model from the Shannon-Weaver
Information Theory model and emphasized on the
encoding and decoding parts of the process.

Lasswell’s Model
developed by communication
theorist Harold D. Lasswell, is a
simple yet influential model that
provides a framework for analyzing
and understanding communication
processes. It looks at the who
(sender), what (message), when
(channel), why (purpose), and how
(effect) of communication.
