1) Discuss Earth pressure at rest ,Active & passive earth pressures Earth pressure
theories
2) Briefly list and explain Earth pressure theories
3) What is Bearing Capacity of Soils
4) Explain type of foundation and Bearing capacity theories
5)Discuss Soil Slope Stability and methods of analysis
6 )A footing 3 m square carries a gross foundation pressure of 600 kPa at a depth of
1.5 m in a sand soil. The saturated and moist unit weights of the sand are 22 and 18
kN/m3, respectively. The shear strength parameters are c = 0 and Ø = 30 . Determine
the factor of safety with respect to shear failure for the following cases:
(a) The water table is 6 m below ground level.
(b) The water table is 1.5 m below ground level.
(c) The water table is 2.5 m below ground level.
(d) The water table is at ground level and there is seepage vertically upwards under
hydraulic gradient i = 0 2.
Use the Terzaghi bearing capacity equation to get the bearing capacity factors Nq , Nγ
equal and Nc respectively
7) A strip footing is to be designed to carry a gross foundation load equals 1000 kN/m
run at a depth of 0.9 m in a gravelly sand stratum. Appropriate shear strength
parameters are c = 0 and Ø = 45 . Assume that the water table exists at the foundation
level. The sand unit weights above and below the water table are 16 and 21 kN/m3,
respectively. Using Terzaghi bearing capacity equation with a safety factor of three,
considering shear failure only, determine the width of the footing.
8) A trench was cut in a clay slope to carry TV dish and water thanks. When the
trench reached a depth of 3 m, the excavation was stopped. On resumption, the top
portion of the clay suddenly failed when a depth of 3.1 m was excavated, engulfing
the trench and injuring several workers. On investigating the failure, you observed a
slip plane approximately parallel to the original slope.
Determine the undrained shear strength of the clay.use α=40o and ˠsat=20KN/m3
9) Dry sand is to be dumped from a truck on the side of a roadway for the
construction of ditch. The properties of the sand are:
ϕcs=35o ,ˠdry=18KN/m3,ˠsat=20KN/m3
Determine the maximum slope angle of the sand in the dry state,
the saturated state without seepage, and the saturated state if groundwater is present
and seepage were to occur parallel to the slope.
What is the safe slope in the dry state for a factor of safety of 1.5?
