Homework # 2 (Flexibility Method of analysis)
Use flexibility method of analysis to:
1) A triangular frame was required to be built as shown below. It is a symmetric frame with both
members inclined at 45o from horizontal. The design engineer designed it as a determinate
frame. However, the bending moment demands in the frame members turned out to be very
high. The site engineer advised the design engineer to replace the roller support at C with a
pin support. How much reduction in the maximum bending moment demand would they
achieve by making this change? Members are made of ISMB200 sections (I = 2,235 cm 4, A =
32.3 cm2). Show all your calculations and compare your results with STAAD-Pro analysis.

2) Determine deflection at end B. The beam AB has a rectangular cross-section of 5 mm (width)
x 10 mm (depth). Elastic modulus of the beam is equal to 2x10 5 N/mm2. Ignore axial
deformations. Verify your results by comparing them with STAAD-Pro or other structural
analysis software. [20 points]
3) Determine the force in each member of this truss. AE is constant for all members. Verify
your results by comparing them with STAAD-Pro or other structural analysis software.

4) (i) Determine the vertical reaction at both supports in this beam. (ii) Describe and justify how
vertical reactions depend on the value of variable ‘n’. (iii) Had it been a simply supported
beam, explain how and why the value of ‘n’ would have affected the vertical reactions?
