Dear Karan,

It was indeed a great pleasure to visit you. I felt quite excited to meet you after several years and
I will never forget the moments we have spent together after a long; it was just like the old days!
I am writing to thank you and invite you to my place.

The way you treated me during my visit is really appreciable - I can never be a great host like
you. I cherished every single day of my holidays. When we went to the 'Wonderland', I was
simply mesmerised and those are unforgettable moments. We enjoyed everything there as if we
were in our school days. I still remember the way you were afraid of water when you were a
teenager, I guess you still are!

It would be a great pleasure to invite you to my home for my birthday next month. We will go to
the nearby hill station and have great fun there. I will expect you to be with me at that time.
Please try to make it.

Warm wishes,

Nishath

a decade. The week we spent together seems to have vanished in no time. I am writing to thank
you for an amazing time and your hospitality during the trip and would like to invite you to my
house.

The whole week was absolutely awesome. In particular, the trip to George Town would remain
etched in my memory forever. That evening we had a fabulous dinner at the Mughal Taj and this
was the best meal I have had in a decade. I wish I could make the time stop! Apart from this, I’d
also like to give my sincere gratitude to your wife who had been an excellent host during the trip.
As you have mentioned, you have a plan to attend a seminar organised by the Indian Federation
Association in Delhi next July. Accordingly, I’d love you to be my guest and stay with my
family. This would give me an opportunity to spend some time with you and have you in our
house.

Warm wishes,

Neeraj

I thoroughly enjoyed the fun-filled trip to the beach, adventurous hike to Mt. Samat and the
basketball game we watched at the Guiliano Stadium. I also like the t-shirt and other items that
you gifted me. However, the most enjoyable experience was the night we went out camping and
it was something I have not done in decades. I hope you also enjoyed the time.

Please visit me in Perth sometime soon so that we can try some of the tourist spots (tourist
destinations) you always wanted to visit. We would enjoy our time and do many fun activities
together.

I am expecting to have you at my house and spend a great time together.

Warm wishes,

David

 share with him/her some memories from his/her mother

Sample 1:
Dear Rebecca,
I’m so sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. Nina was a very special woman. I have such
fond memories of growing up and spending the night at your house. My mother wasn’t around
much growing up, and yours really took me under her wing.
She always tried to include me in special events like shopping for prom dresses and birthday
celebrations. I still remember the cake she baked for my 21st birthday. Her love meant more to
me than I could ever express.
It means so much to me that now our little girls are friends, too. I know you want to keep Sarah
close to you right now. But if there’s ever a time you need a little space to yourself, just say the
word. I’ll come to pick her up and she can spend the night with Lucy at my house. I’m going to
call you next weekend too and see if you two are up for a playdate at the park.
I love you.
Miranda

Sample 2:

Dear Rakhi,
I got the sad news about your mother's demise from one of our common friends. I have no words
to express for the loss of your mother. I am still in deep shock to hear this. She was a woman of
substance with a great heart to help others and was available for everybody around her. Her
sudden death has come as a sad loss to all of them who knew her. She always had reasons to
make others smile. She was a thoughtful and a wonderful person and I cherish the moments that I
spent with her during the visits.

I remember the time spent with her and how she used to be so happy to bake for all of us.
My deepest regrets and condolences are with you for the irreparable loss. My prayers and
thoughts are with you to help you cope up with this difficult time. I will come to meet you this
coming Sunday. Don't hesitate to call me if you need any help or you want to talk to me or if I
can do something to lessen the grief.

Please accept my sympathies for the sad loss. She was a kind and gentle soul.
May her soul rest in peace.
Jyoti.

Sample 3:
Dear Mike,
I was sorry to hear about your mother passing away. I know she had been sick for a while, but
our whole family was hoping she’d pull through. I lost my mother last year, but I know that
doesn’t mean I know what you’re going through.
Every relationship is different, and every loss we suffer is unique to us. Still, I hope you know
that I’m always here to listen if you want to talk. And if you’re not up for talking that’s okay too.
I’ll bring over a six-pack and we can watch the hockey game together.
I only met your mom a few times, but I know she was so proud of you. She was so excited about
your recent promotion. She couldn’t stop talking about you and everything you have achieved
when I talked with hẻ at your Labor Day barbecue.
Again, I’m so sorry for your loss.

Topic 11:
You eat at your college cafeteria every lunch time. However, you think it needs some
improvements. Write a letter about 150 words to the college magazine. In your letter:
 explain what you like about the cafeteria
 say what is wrong
 suggest how it could be improved
Begin your letter as follows: Dear Sir/Madam

Sample 1:

Dear Mr Scott,

I am writing this letter to bring a couple of issues to your attention with regards to our college
cafeteria. I am hoping that you would publish an article related to this in our college magazine in
its next publication.

I have been going to our college cafeteria since the time I started college, and I have always liked
it since then. In fact, the perfect location of the cafeteria, its hygiene and cleanliness, and
varieties of the menu – all have contributed greatly to attracting many students from our college.
However, when it comes to the prices of some of the food items as well as the customer service,
the cafeteria could certainly do some improvements.

Now, I understand that the price of the food can be a bit tricky issue to address but I believe that
everyone would also agree that some of the foods are overpriced, especially, for college students,
many of whom don’t have their own source of income.

So, based on the issues above, I would appreciate it if you publish an article that addresses how
this cafeteria is serving us, how the prices of a few food items could be reduced a little and how
its staff can be a bit more proactive sooner than later. That would be helpful to all students who
eat in the college cafeteria.

Yours sincerely,

Alex Joshua

Sample 2:

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with our canteen hygiene and cleanliness.
Firstly, I'm a big fan of a few of the items offered in our canteen in terms of their taste and the
main item which I personally like is the grilled chicken club sandwich and the taste of the
sandwich is top-notch, this is one of the main reason at least twice a week I will be visiting the
cafeteria. However, I'm very disappointed with the management for not maintaining hygiene
standards.
The main reason for writing this letter is due to yesterday's incident, as I was served with the
sandwich which has uncooked chicken. Though it is the first time I have experienced this
situation for the past two years. I would suggest there should be an investigation on this.
I would also make a suggestion to higher officials to conduct food inspections on a daily basis to
make sure the guidelines are followed. This way we can make sure cooked and fresh food is
served to all the students.
Yours faithfully,
Teja

Sample 3:

Hello sir/ madam,

This is James Austin third-year student of this college studying in the political science batch .I
am writing on the behalf of student union regarding the cafeteria of the college. This letter is to
inform the management that though the ambience and seating area of this cafe is quite good but
there are certain points that I want that college authorities should pay attention.
Firstly, the quality of food or snacks served there is not of good quality, a number of students
have complained regarding stomachache after having lunch at this place. Moreover, the cook on
the premises doesn’t use all safety measures related to hygiene.
Lastly, the most important thing is that cutlery or plates used for serving snacks in the canteen
should disposable.Further, there is a suggestion by the majority of students protein diet and salads
should be added to the menu.Major consideration should be given to the health of students.
Hope you will take interest in my suggestions for the improvement of the cafeteria.
Yours thankfully,
Jagjot Kaur.

PART II: ESSAYS

Choose one of the following topics and write your essay with at least 200-250 words. You
should spend no more than 30 minutes on this part.
Topic 1: Should women get plastic surgery to make themselves have a better self-image?
Topic 2: How is the Internet affecting our intelligence?
Topic 3: What is the value of a family vacation?
Topic 19: Do violent images, music, and games cause people to act out violently?
Topic 20: Does living together before marriage create better marriages.

Topic 1: Should women get plastic surgery to make themselves have a better self-image?

Sample 1:
The advanced technology and hi-tech machines hugely contributed to elegance in modern-time
and its support for various beauty demands with ease and convenience. Having said that,
people who possess eye-catching appearance are enormously conducive to their career path. In
contrast , a great deal of people still appreciate natural beauty and are biased toward getting
plastic surgery.
Firstly, beauty plays an important role in people these days. It somehow brings various
opportunities that may open new chapters for their life. For instance, the recruitment criteria of
many companies require their employees to have great appearance to implement various kinds of
jobs such as to be sales representatives or on behalf of companies negotiating in foreign markets.
Furthermore, for those who have prominent beauty be able to make a killing from fashion
advertisements or become a model with lucrative income.
Secondly, the above mention of beauty advantage is the main factor for more involved in plastic
surgery. It’s a fundamental right for people who are less good-looking to be beautiful in order to
get better chances in their future life. The advent of technology nowadays used in plastic surgery
is getting faster and safer. In contrast, too much exposure to surgery will bring adverse effects on
people's health in the long-term.

In short, from my perspective, I totally agree on getting plastic surgery to have a better self-
image and that is no longer a controversial topic. However, people are conscious of beauty's
importance and have no injustice anymore. In addition, people shoud be proud of their natural
beauty that parents give them.

Sample 2:
With the application of science and technology in medicine, people are becoming more aware of
cosmetic surgery. According to a recent survey, nearly half of teenagers said they wanted surgery
in pursuit of a "designer" body like their idols and celebrities, but there are pros and cons to
having this surgery.
There are two main reasons why youngsters want to go through cosmetic surgery. Usually, a teen
wishes to use the surgery to correct poorly proportioned parts of their body. For example, Caitlin
Clemons, an American teenager, who used to have low self-esteem because of her body, was
reported to gain confidence after breast augmentation surgery.
Going under the knife for plastic surgery could cause some dangers, such as a reaction against
anesthesia used in the operations. Having cosmetic surgery is likely to make patients get scars,
which cannot be corrected. It may also make teenagers overestimate physical appearances over
inner characteristics. Gradually, they may not treasure their personalities but try as hard as
possible to enhance their looks.
In conclusion, getting plastic surgery to make women have a better self-image has both
advantages and disadvantages. It could help you become more beautiful, but at the same time,
make you become a surgery disaster, if the surgery does not succeed. As a teenager, trying to
enhance our body is necessary, but we should also try to improve our personality.

Topic 2: How is the Internet affecting our intelligence?

Sample 1:
The emergence of cutting-edge technology has had some life-changing impacts on people these
days. Without doubt, Internet will bring pros and cons for individuals. In particular, web-based
sites help people gather information as well as make amusement a lot more convenient. It
gradually became an integral part of each individual in the modern world.
Firstly, people are accustomed to not living without technological devices and Internet. It mainly
brings enormous information support for their daily work and studies with ease and precision. It
shapes younger good habits by actively looking for abundant information that boosts their
cognitive development. The younger generation has broadened their horizons and enhanced their
skills through gathering available experience from others and access to free various lessons
provided on the Internet.
On the other hand, a great deal of data needs to be sorted out before posting on the Internet
because users of all ages could have access to counterfeit information and adverse impacts on
their intellectual development. Users under 18 without older supervision easily exposure to
erotica, porngraphic materials that hugely impact on their intelligence later on and be indifferent
on their performances at school.
The proliferation of Internet somehow improves individuals' know-how and bring a variety of
opportunities for them in their career path and study. In contrast, It still has a hideous risk for a
person of low intelligence and lack of recognized ability.

Sample 2:
Technology has unarguably created a huge impact on our lives. In the present day, many studies
significantly showed internet affecting our intelligence as we use it on daily basis for various
reasons in many ways.
From receiving or passing information, to getting assistance in education and research field, from
office work and banking to other needs like entertainment, traveling, keeping up with the
happenings around the globe and current affairs; technology has shaped our lives in an entirely
different spectrum and one of the biggest tools which has been used for playing the role is the
internet.
Internet has been one of the most significant creations of mankind. Internet affecting our
intelligence is well accepted in today’s era and is no longer considered as an assumption. It does
so by providing a sea of information just at a distance of a click and access to possibly
everything one can ask for, internet has highly improved the life of an ordinary man. However,
studies have shown that the increasing use of internet is also making a negative impact on our
intelligence and overall our brain.
The impact of internet on one’s intelligence differs from one individual to other and in the end, it
finally comes to one similar result that it’s use should be in moderation to avoid any negative
outcome. If used properly, it’s significant for progress, gaining knowledge, seeking information
and making great success, however, the excessive use and dependency can cause harm to one’s
thinking and creative abilities – therefore, it’s encouraged to use it as a helping tool and not as a
final resort.

Topic 3: What is the value of a family vacation?

Sample 1:
It is easy to lose sight of the importance of family and the time that must be spent with it in
today's technology culture. We must acknowledge that the foundations of a family are love,
compromise, trust, and responsibility. A family vacation, on the other hand, allows us to take a
break from our offices, schools, universities, and institutions and invest that time in
strengthening our bonds with our loved ones.
As a result of the expansion of social media networks, mobile phone use, and cutting-edge
technology, families are already suffering the most. We've become so involved in internet
relationships that we've lost sight of reality. There isn't a single person who isn't weary by his or
her hectic daily routine. So, for a while, a family vacation provides an escape from all of life's
stresses, fears, and disappointments. It's nothing short of a miracle that you get a respite from
your frantic routine. However, in order to forget about the difficulties of everyday life, you must
make your family vacation as enjoyable and easygoing as possible.
A family vacation will leave you with long-lasting memories that will improve your mood. You
must make certain that you enjoy every minute of your trip. If you visit places you appreciate,
photograph them so you may return to them whenever you are anxious or irritated as a result of
your job. Furthermore, such memories will substantially contribute to the establishment of a
stronger tie between you and your family members. Furthermore, a family vacation may give
you with the opportunity to explore and gain new experiences. If you are traveling with children,
you must ensure that they benefit from the experience as well. Moreover, this way you can teach
them a lot about history and geography more than they learn from their books and traditional
classroom settings.
To sum up, whatever difficulties emerge during your family trip will finish up teaching you
something wonderful and beautiful about your life. As a result, you'll need to block out time in
your calendar to arrange a family trip. To have a good family vacation based on love,
cooperation, respect, and responsibility, appropriate planning and investment are required.
Sample 2:
There has been a trend over recent decades for families to become less close than they were in
the past and this situation is largely accepted in society. This essay will discuss the reasons for
this and examine the benefits and drawbacks of this development.
One of the first reasons for a decline in the closeness of families is connected to the busy
lifestyles that we now lead. Most people are having to work longer hours and often both parents
work, so they simply do not have as much time to spend with each other as they did in the past.
Another factor is the materialistic and consumer driven culture we now live in, which has led to
less value being placed on family relationships. Modern technology also means that people are
more interested in their online life than interacting with their family in their free time.
It could be argued that this has benefits. If people are not so close with their family, they are free
to pursue their own dreams and aspirations, and to focus on improving their own lifestyle.
However, I believe that there are far more negative outcomes. The most important factors
leading to a fulfilled and happy life are emotional security and comfort. Without these we are in
danger of feeling lost. It is a difficult world we live in and we need the support of people close to
us to cope with modern life. We are seeing a rise in mental health problems in many countries
and this may well be a factor in this.
To conclude, busy modern lifestyles, changing cultural values and modern technology are
causing families to become less close. We should try to halt this trend as it has more negative
than positive outcomes.
Sample 3:
These days, a typical family consists of four to five members at most, while in the past, when the
trend of joint family was inevitable, this number used to be much larger. It is evident that the
families are not as close as they use to be. This essay would examine the possible reasons for this
and highlight its advantages and disadvantages.
To begin with, in the past, most of the family members use to work in the local region and they
hardly traveled outside their native city. However, the competition in the current workforce
demands individuals to shift their base in search of better job opportunities. Additionally, in old
times, parents controlled a large part of their children's life. For example, what career to pursue,
whom to marry, etc. Finally, in a joint family, the decisions are often made based on overall
family needs. Hence, a person might have to compromise his personal desire to accomplish
family requirements.
However, the joint families have their own benefits as well. The most predominant one being
that we always have someone close to us when dealing with difficult times. Isolation during
adversity could be intrusive and irritating for anyone. Moreover, the family atmosphere fosters
the feelings like love and respect for each other, which plays an integral part in one's self
development.
In conclusion, joint families have benefits as well as certain drawbacks attached to them. In my
opinion, the advantages are far more and they outweigh the disadvantages. Although one might
have to make certain personal compromises, the overall outcome would be happier families and
a happy nation
Topic 19: Do violent images, music, and games cause people to act out violently?

Sample 1:
Playing games are considered an instrument of sound mental and physical health. The trend of
indoor games such as video games is proliferating and gaining fame among all age groups – from
adolescents to adults. However, the impact of this trend has come under scrutiny and has been a
concern for many. The protagonists of such games cite that video games are effective
educational tools, whereas dissenters void that claim by counting numerous demerits of such
games. I too believe that video games are lethal trends and have negative repercussions. Some of
the disadvantages will be outlined in following paragraphs.
Firstly, while playing video games, players develop the sedentary position which is harmful to
them ergonomically. Additionally, incessant exposure to game monitors could be detrimental to
their vision. Other than physical impact, video games also impact emotional and social behaviour
negatively, especially to children and adolescents. It can be noticed that the themes of a majority
of the video games are prominently based on violent battle, massacre or destroying animal and
mankind. Overindulgence to such games makes the young minds of children susceptible to
emotional indifference. They could like to emulate the destroyers and warriors regarding them as
role models.
In contrast, enthusiasts enumerate some credits to the account of video games. They believe that
playing such games helps to improve your command on the technical gadgets. It is observed that
good players are cognizant of the know-hows of computers and can monitor the game efficiently.
Being good at the video game is a demand for the new generation. Many children complain that
are marginalised in the school if they are not up-to-date with the video games, which leads to
embarrassment for them.
To conclude, I would like to reiterate that video games have far more disastrous impacts that
outweigh its positive sides. In order to control this destructive trend, parents, teachers,
lawmakers and each individual will have to contribute to instigate awareness that video games
should be controlled or terminated.

Sample 2:
In the modern world, computers and electronics entertainment devices have become totally
pervasive in our society. Video game, one aspect of electronics entertainment, has triggered
many debates about its positive and negative impact on health and psychology. Several studies
have been done and researchers have divided opinion on the effects of video games on player's
health and mentality. In my opinion, benefits of video games outshine the drawbacks if few
cautions are taken by players in selecting the type of games.
Among the bad effects of video games, its impact on health is most debated. Studies suggest that
youngsters are spending more time at home than playing outside, which clearly has effects on
their growth and development. But with the development of newer technologies, newer forms of
games are available in the market, which encourages people to participate actively and physically
in different sports. Sony Corporation, for example, has a virtual tennis game where a user needs
to play with a computer holding a sensor in his hand which works as a tennis racket. This gives
the user a virtual experience of a real game. And also helps to improve mind and body
coordination by letting the user flex his responses. Therefore, choice of video game and the
device make a lot of difference.
Another important positive effect of the video game is on brain development and problem-
solving skills. Online Puzzles and number games are increasingly being used by schools to
improve thinking capacity of the pupil. Similarly, corporate have training programs designed in
form of computer games. This helps to make sure that trainees focus and interest are maintained
and maximum knowledge is passed in a fun filled way.
Therefore, video games have a higher degree of positive effects on human than their negative
effect and can be used as a tool for learning and development. But, like any other tool caution
needs to be taken in selection and usage.
Sample 3:
In the era of modernization, video games have been an obsession regardless the gender and age.
With the aid of latest technology, the young learns to play games as early as one to two years old
following their parents’ steps. Research shows that exposing gadgets to toddlers can cause
negative effects towards their growth. Thus, we should realise how harmful video games can be
if we fail to use it in a proper manner.
Video games cause addiction and this can lead to many problems such as responsibility issues.
Teenagers, usually have a hard time in delivering their everyday chores once they are stuck in
front of the screen. It creates disciplinary problems as they fail to restrain themselves from
spending too much time in front of the computer. They began to neglect their homework and
assignments which not only put themselves in jeopardy but also their teammates if the task
required teamwork.
Furthermore, the vulgarity of certain video games has been proven to be the reason of
aggressiveness inside a person. They easily get influenced by the video games as they are cut out
from the outer world. The vulnerable group - the young adults, is the riskiest group as they are
still in their development phase. There have the tendency to imitate the improper actions
depicted in the video games in their daily life.

Besides, health problems are increasing since video games are being introduced. Disease
associated with bones and body posture seem to have the most drastic changes as people are
healthier in the last 10 years. Not to mention, most people need to wear spectacles nowadays to
help in their vision. I believe, that these have got to do with the ridiculous amount of time spent
looking at those interactive images.
Coming for self-defence: the self-claimed gamer once said that they manage to improve their
English by playing more and more video games. Well, this is partly true as they may learn new
vocabulary in a fun way compared to stuck-up their nose in a dictionary. Nevertheless, it only
restricts in vocabulary wise, not in grammar as most of the games use simple everyday English
rather than Queen’s English.
Sample 4:
In information technology age, people are engaged with computer programs; one of the most
popular computer programs is video games. Although having some negative effect, video games
can teach some useful skills. This essay outlines both positive and negative effect of video
games.
Video games are made in different genres including horror, sport, adventure etc. Some of these
games are useful and educational. Players of these games need basic information and skills to
complete them. For instance, a plane simulation game requires a player to know primary pilot
skills; so the player has to gather some information about pilot skills such as taking off, landing,
navigation, and etc. Gradually, the player feels some skills in him. Furthermore, the puzzle
games make player challenging with secret points of the game's story. Recent mentioned games
type increases players’ creativity. In a nutshell, video games can be useful and educational.
On the other hand, some games are not beneficial. The horror game is a good example. They
make a bad effect on players’ morality. In addition, playing video games usually is addictive.
Video game players play more and more heedless of time. This may cause overweight. Latterly,
the main factors of most of the video games are sex and violence. These factors navigate the
society to dark way. Thus, video games have undesirable aspects.
To conclude, video games have both good and bad impacts. Choosing the right game is the first
step to use them rightly. How to play and how much to play are the latter steps. It depends on the
player how to act wisely.
Sample 5:
Nowadays, most people of all age groups, especially young adults, are drawn to video games
with the high technology developing year after year. Video game devices such as Play Station
Four and Nintendo Wii are popular examples of high-tech devices. Although playing video
games can be quite fun, it can also affect the player negatively. I believe that video games
withhold cons more than pros.

One of its adverse effects is that it is a waste of time. Playing video games is not much of a
problem when limits are present, but most individuals exceed this limit. Some people put down a
two-hour time limit for play but sadly end up playing for more hours and are not aware of time.
Rather than spending one's time on such games, it is more beneficial to the individual to take the
time to read books or even spend time on a favourite hobby, for instance, that will most probably
lead it to evolve over the years.
Another reason to support my opinion is that it lessens the human to human contact. Due to the
hours taken on video games, the person will not have a normal social life where people speak
face to face. A young adult playing, choosing to turn down going to the mall with friends where
they will socialise, can be taken as an example. Modern games have many violent and
devastating plots and game actions that can psychologically affect the players. The gamers suffer
from various health problems and often are less social.
To draw the conclusion, the positive sides of the video games are fewer when compared to the
negative sides. Video gaming should be limited to certain hours and the rest of the time wasted
should be replaced by socialising and activities that will benefit one’s future.

before marriage include getting to know your spouse, learning about one's talents, and
determining whether or not he or she can meet your expectations. There are also certain
downsides to living together before marriage, such as religious and family values, parenting
issues, and so on. I believe that there are more benefits than drawbacks to living together before
marriage, because drawbacks in this type of relationship are frequently avoided.

One of the advantages of living together before marriage is getting to know a person that you
might marry with. It is important for a person to know almost everything about the other person
that he / she is going to get marry with. However, it can't be accomplish without living together
for a while before getting married. People need to know how a person is handling his / her life
from all aspects such as behavior, mental, financial and others before a person decides to get
married with.
Living together before marriage was once frowned upon, and in most faiths, living together
before marriage is considered a sin. When these couples live together before marriage, they are
sometimes breaching their religious and familial beliefs, and in certain religions and cultures,
this is punishable. These issues can occasionally pose problems for unmarried couples, causing
their relationships to break apart. Parenting issues are another downside of living together before
marriage.
However, the downsides of living together before marriage may be avoided in some cases, and
living together before marriage is a fantastic approach to locate the appropriate person to married
with. Finally, I believe that if individuals decide to live together before marriage, they should be
serious and live wisely.
