Lesson Plan in Mathematics 3
The Grade 3 pupils should be able to identify and visualize symmetry in the environment and in
design with 75% proficiency.
I.Objective. Completes a symmetric figure with respect to a given line of symmetry.

II- Subject Matter:
A. Content: Symmetry in the environment and in Design
B. Reference: Mathematics 3- Teachers Guide pp. 260- pp.263
C. Materials:
picture of butterfly, scissors, chart, bond paper, drawing materials, manila paper, tape, tarpapel,
and powerpoint presentation
D. Mathematical Concept and Skills:
1. Symmetry is when a figure has two sides that are mirror images of one another.
2. Construction of basic shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, circles
E. Value Focus: Creativity
III. Preliminary Activities
A.
1. Drill ( Math Songs)
2. Review (THURSDAY)
Instruction: Place a check mark on the animal that shows symmetry and an "X" if
not.
3. Checking of Assignments
Instructions: Write on the answer sheet whether the image is symmetry or not
symmetry.
Answer:
1. Symmetry 2. Not Symmetry 3. Symmetry 4. Symmetry 5. Not Symmetry
B.
1. Motivation
Class, I have here a song, Fly, Fly the Butterfly.
Are you familiar with this song?
Okay, let us sing this song together…
Fly, fly, fly the butterfly
In the morning, it’s flying high
In the meadow, it’s flying low
Fly, fly, fly the butterfly
What was the song all about?
2. Presentation
3. Discussion
1.What do we called about this picture if I will fold this butterfly into two?
2. Why do we called this symmetry?
3. What do we called this line?
4. Generalization
What is symmetry?
Symmetry is when a figure has two parts that are mirror images of one another.
A figure is symmetrical if you can draw a line through a picture of the object and along either
side the image would look exactly the same.
What other examples in the environment can we find that show symmetry?
C. 1. Practice Exercise #1
Instruction: Draw a line of symmetry and name on each figure
2.Practice Exercise #2
Group Activity:
Group 1 Energetic Carabao:
Cut It Out!
Task: The group are task to cut out symmetrical objects shown in environment or a design
using a colored paper and scissor
Group 2 Brave Eagle:
Draw and Name it:
Task: The group are task to draw the missing object to form a symmetry and named ii.
Group 3 Strong Nipa Hut:
Draw to Create
Task: The group are task to draw on a manila paper of any symmetry objects in environment
or design.
CRITERIA FOR SCORING
Accuracy 5 points
Orderliness 5 points
Punctuality 5 points
Unity 5 points
Total 20 points
3.Practice Exercise #3
Instruction: Complete each figure. Draw the missing parts to complete the picture.
IV. EVALUATION:
Instruction: Encircle from the right the corresponding image to complete the symmetrical
shape.
V. ASSIGNMENT:
Instruction: Complete the images by drawing their halves. Provide the name of the formed
image.
