Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Race Spreadsheet - 4 Lanes

This spreadsheet organizes a Pinewood Derby race and computes scores. It

automates a paper system that has been used successfully for years by Pack
18 of Everett Washington.

It is setup for a 4-lane track, with the lanes are labeled A, B, C and D. Cars are
raced in groups of up to 16 cars. Within each group, each car will race 4 times
-- once on each of the lanes. Group sizes of 13 to 16 is preferred.

Here are the steps to follow:

1. At weigh-in, register the cars in numerical order from 1 to as many as 150.
Do not duplicate numbers, i.e. - do not have two cars numbered with the same
number. Then divide them into groups (maybe dens or ranks) of about 6 to 16.

2. Go to the "Racers" worksheet (click tab at bottom) and list all the racers
names next to their registered car numbers.

3. For each group, make a copy of the worksheet for the number of cars. For
example, if you have a 9-car group, right-click the "9 Cars" tab at the bottom of
the spreadsheet. Then select "Move or copy.." and check the "Create Copy"
box.
4. Right-click the tab for the new worksheet and rename it something like "Race
1"

5. Enter the car numbers in the Heat 1 "Car" column. Names will automatically
be displayed. These numbers and names re-appear in different places in Heat
2 and Heat 3.
6. Run the first heat. In the "Place" column enter 1, 2, 3, or 4 for first through
fourth place. If you have a timer, you can enter times in seconds.

7. Continue racing 4 cars at a time. When done the "Score" column will
contain a sum of the "Place" columns for each car. The "Total Place" column
will have a 1 for the 1st place car, 2 for the second place, and so on.

8. Go back to step 2 for each group of cars.

9. Pick the top few winners from each group and create a final race group. Go
back to step 2 and run the final race. There is a 4-car worksheet for the grand
finale.
