Fiction French Literature About the Author Well-versed in European languages and an archaeologist by profession, Prosper Mrime (180370) wrote stories and novellas which displayed his concern for historical accuracy and his fascination for foreign places.

A classic piece of French short fiction, The Etruscan Vase is here presented alongside three other stories: The Vision of Charles XI, a dark tale of premonition set in the Swedish royal palace, Tamango, an account of a slave-ship revolt, and The Blue Room, a supernatural farce and one of Mrimes final works; as well as two non-fiction pieces: A Hanging, a description of a real-life public execution, and H.B., a tribute to the writer Stendhal.

and a powerful influence on generations of writers and film-makers to this day, Edgar Allan Poe is still counted among the greatest short-story writers of all time and seen as one of the initiators of the detective, horror and science-fiction genres.

Mrimes tales have gradually come to be considered perfect models of the narrative art, and we confess our own admiration for them is such that we feel like declaring it a capital offence in a young storyteller to put pen to paper without having read them and digested them.

As each character tries to readjust their memories and emotions with the shifts of time and reality, this long-delayed excursion will also prove to be a journey of self-discovery and fulfillment for them. Rich in symbolism, daring in style, elegiac in tone, and encapsulating Virginia Woolfs ideas on life, art and human relationships, To the Lighthouse is a landmark of twentieth-century literature and one of the high

As Mrs Dalloway works on the preparations for a dinner party, her thoughts throughout the day wander from memories of the past to interrogations about the present and lead her to assess the choices she has made in life and love. Her monologue interweaves with the account of the distress, on that same day, of the shell-shocked veteran Septimus Warren Smith, whose trauma and hallucinations end in tragedy, as the links between the two characters unfold. One of Virginia Woolfs most celebrated novels, Mrs Dalloway is a triumph of experimentation, a cornerstone of Modernism and a subtle examination of love, freedom, mental illness and the female condition in society.

Experiencing failure and frustration in love and in his career, Blaine finds his youthful enthusiasm gradually giving way to disillusionment, cynicism and a life of dissolution. By James Joyce
Born in Dublin in modest circumstances, James Joyce (18821941) spent most of his life abroad, living in Trieste, Paris and Zurich. His writings, however, mainly centre on Dublin most famously Ulysses, Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. He pioneered and perfected avant-garde prose techniques that saw him rise to the rank of one of Europes foremost Modernists.

From the unsettling adventure of two truant schoolboys to the crafty schemes of two con men, from a young womans refusal to abandon Ireland and elope with a sailor to a mans moment of clarity during an annual dance party, these stories offer a moving portrait of an entire world and era which are about to disappear. Controversial, scandalous, erudite and funny, Ulysses is undisputedly a landmark of twentieth-century modernism. It charts one day 16th June 1904 in the lives of three inhabitants of Dublin: the advertising salesman Leopold Bloom, the artist Stephen Dedalus and Blooms wife Molly. Their peregrinations, thoughts and encounters form the basis of the narrative, which becomes a celebration of all human experience through the lives of specific individuals in a specific place at a specific time. Ulysses is both an experimental novel and a book intimately concerned with the events of modern life.

A lively repository of literary allusion and colloquial realism, this dazzlingly innovative, ambitious novel is here presented in its 1939 version, which contains notable textual differences from the standard editions currently in print. Although a man of many talents novelist, dramatist, historian it was as a poet that Pushkin saw himself first and foremost, and it is as a poet that his unique talent is most apparent. This volume contains all of Pushkins lyrical poetry by a wide range of translators, and charts his evolution as a writer, covering themes from love to art, religion and philosophy in compositions such as The Monument, Night, The Demons and The Poet. Pushkin was the first writer to embrace Russian as a literary language in its own right, as well as Russian rather than classical subjects for his poetry. For newcomers and those familiar with his work alike, his groundbreaking verse has been made available in its entirety to the English-speaking world in this new edition.

Set against the backdrop of the the Pugachev rebellion against Catherine the Great, The Captains Daughter was Pushkins only completed novel and remains one of his most popular works. The Comic Romance paul Scarron

Translated by Jacques Houis
New translation Only English edition in print of one of the most important works of French literature

Portraying the characters and events of a small Midwestern town at the end of the nineteenth century, Winesburg, Ohio is a chronological cycle of stories which reads like an episodic novel. Centring on George Willard, a young local reporter with big-city aspirations, and his conversations with fellow inhabitants, the book gives voice to a disparate cast of figures and lays bare the constraints and struggles of life in a small community.

Paul Scarrons masterpiece, The Comic Romance, recounts the adventures of a troupe of provincial itinerant actors, skilfully weaving comic anecdotes of their amorous exploits and the central love story between Landre and his beloved Anglique into a rich and realistic tapestry depicting rural France. One of the most innovative and influential playwrights of the last century, he is best known for his plays Six Characters in Search of an Author and Henry IV.

Populated with unforgettable characters, such as Alikhanovs fellow guides Mitrofanov and Pototsky or the KGB officer Belyaev, and presented here for the first time in the English language, Pushkin Hills is arguably Dovlatovs most personal work and a poignant metaphor on the Russian attitude towards life and art.

Preoccupied with the nature of truth and delusion, Pirandellos plays are a daring exploration of human actions and the dark motives lying behind them, and the culmination of the school of theatre inaugurated by authors such as Ibsen and Chekhov.
