Ancient Empires of the Middle East

The Hittites formed an empire in Anatolia in 1650 BCE, conquering surrounding areas with their fierce army. They instituted less harsh laws than Hammurabi's Code and fought Egypt to a draw in the Battle of Kadesh. The Assyrians originated in northern Mesopotamia and formed a highly advanced military between 850-650 BCE that allowed them to take over a large area of the Middle East and Egypt. They had a well-organized army with leather and metal armor, shields, and engineers. Despite brutal conquests, they ruled their empire fairly through local governors. The Assyrian empire declined after 612 BCE when Nineveh was burned by the Chaldeans and Medes.
